Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Richard Langston Eric Downing Jonathan Hess Mark Hansen Priscilla Layne © 2013 Kirkland Alexander Fulk ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii Abstract KIRKLAND ALEXANDER FULK: Literature as Utopia: Spaces of Alterity in West German Postcolonial and Science-Fiction Literature after Sixty-Eight (Under the direction of Richard Langston) The dominant narrative surrounding West German literature of the seventies maintains that following the collapse of the student movement around 1968, the collective utopian aspirations of this generation gave way to the loss thereof in the new emphasis on private, political subjectivity in the following decade. Literature as Utopia challenges such commonplace accounts by examining spatial alterity in postcolonial and science fiction literature of the 1970s written by Nicolas Born, Hubert Fichte, Alexander Kluge, and the anonymous cult writer P.M. This study reassess the currency of utopia after 1968—both the “good place” and “no place”—by probing these authors’ works using post-Adornian aesthetic theories that emerged concurrently in West Germany in the seventies, namely those of Karl Heinz Bohrer, Hans Robert Jauß, Wolfgang Iser, Dieter Wellershoff, Oskar Negt and Alexander Kluge. In addition, my dissertation traffics in the larger intellectual history surrounding the 1970s by bringing my primary texts into dialogue with theorists outside of Germany such as Edward Said, Homi Bhabha, Susan Sontag, Clifford Geertz, Henri Lefebvre, and others in order to assess the ways in which the literature of this period begins to respond to theory. In this dissertation, I argue that this post-revolutionary literature was particularly adept at opening textual spaces in which the idea of utopia could regain a foothold as a socio-critical force after its demise just a few years earlier. iii Acknowledgements A project such as this is never a solitary undertaking. This dissertation does not completely refute this commonly-held trajectory in literary history or the predominance of New Subjectivity in literary production. To be sure, New Subjectivity was not a wholehearted eschewal of the political, but rather a critical redefinition thereof that brought about new movements, such as 2 the Greens and feminism. Rowohlt Verlag, pioneer of the German paperback, the Manny Farber termite of West German publishing (Suhrkamp, of course, the white elephant). Literaturbetrieb -- typical German summation. Previously, the German Literaturbetrieb had been dominated by Gruppe 47. After the suspension of Gruppe 47, after 1968, the field lay open. Rowohlt's commitment to "die neue Literatur," both in the Literaturmagazin and the companion series Das neue Buch can be read in retrospect as a cultural history of West Germany during the seventies (which we might demarcate as having taken place between the 1972 Munich Olympics and the fall of Helmut Schmidt's government). The Seventies: “Atmosphäre muss gereinigt werden von allen (rechten und linken) Spielarten des Obskurantismus und Opportunismus, von dem Pfaffentum, das heute die marxistische Lehre verwaltet, ebenso wie von der bürgerlichen Feuilletonmafia.”1 Of course Rowohlt continued to publish Literaturmagazin until 2001. Matthias Harder and Almut Hille, Würzburg, Königshausen & Neumann, 306 pp., is intended to provide an insight into Berlin literature and culture for readers located outside Germany, and thus the majority of its contributions offer generally stimulating introductions to or overviews of their subject. The editors open the volume with a useful historical survey of ‘literarisches Berlin und Stadtentwicklung’ from the 7th c. to the present day (9–34). Of the remaining 6 essays, 7 focus on the post-war period. H. Peitsch (8– 204) identifies a number of recurring topoi in Berlin literature from both East and West from the 940s to the 970s. M. von Engelhardt (205–24) explores depictions of the Wall, the representation of West Berlin as the FRG’s ‘Kulturhauptstadt’ and East Berlin as ‘Hauptstadt der DDR’ in the literature of the 970s and 980s. J. Loescher (225–38) analyses contributions to the 995 anthology ‘Berliner Geschichten’ with particular reference to stories by Martin Stade and Klaus Schlesinger. A. Hille (239–56) explores representations of Berlin in texts by (post-) migrant writers like Aras Ören, Feridun Zaimoğlu, Zafer Şenocak, Yadé Kara, and Emine Sevgi Özdamar. S. Fischer-Kania (257–72) also examines an ‘outsider’ perspective on the city, reading Wladimir Kaminer’s Russendisko and Schönhauser Allee. T. Jung (273–86) investigates the extent to which the Berlin film Sonnenallee is able to offer an alternative to official Wende discourses.

    Germany: Myth and Apologia in Christa Wolf’s Novel Medea. Voices Yixu Lü, Institute for International Studies, University of Technology Sydney To understand the background to this recasting of the familiar Greek myth as a novel narrated by several voices, a few bare details are necessary. In 1984, Christa Wolf produced her first re-casting of an ancient myth with the title Kassandra. Published at a time when West German interest in East German literature was at its height, Kassandra became a cult book in the West without obliging its author to flee the East or having her silenced by the censor—no mean achievement. Kassandra skilfully blended the type of feminism then popular in the West with a somewhat elegiac depiction of the betrayal of ideals in a society falling prey to totalitarianism. A contributing factor to the book’s success was the simultaneous appearance of a series of lectures the author gave at the University of Frankfurt, in the Federal Republic, in which she set forth very eloquently the background reading and conceptualisation which led to the form Kassandra finally assumed. There were critics who felt that the lectures, giving the novel’s ‘presuppositions’, were generally better written than the work itself, since they give the overall effect of an openness which is lacking in the highly stylised and gloomy prose of the novel itself. In 1989, Christa Wolf, as one of the mildly dissident public identities still tolerated by the East German regime, was ideally placed to speak for those who wanted the crumbling of the old East Germany to make the way free for a genuine experiment with socialism, in whose values she still fervently believed.

Bertolt Brecht, the German playwright, made a note about his play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, written in 1941. The play depicts a Chicago gangster boss, clearly recognizable as a persiflage of Adolf Hitler. Brecht writes: “The big political criminals should be sacrificed, and first of all to ridicule. Because they are not big political criminals, they are perpetrators of big political crimes, which is something completely different.” (Brecht 1967, 1177). In 1997 the German filmmaker, theatre director and professional provocateur Christoph Schlingensief created the performance Mein Filz, mein Fett, mein Hase at the Documenta X – the notoriously political episode of the art manifestation in Kassel, Germany – as a tribute to Fluxus-artist Joseph Beuys. He made his audience shout “Tötet Helmut Kohl!” (“Kill Helmut Kohl”, then the federal chancellor of Germany) and he was shortly arrested for this appeal for murder, but never prosecuted (Schlingensief 1997). Helmut Kohl was no ‘big political criminal’, neither was he a perpetrator of big political crimes, comparable to Arturo Ui/Adolf Hitler. By shouting this death threat on stage and by including it in an accompanying poster campaign, Schlingensief points to Helmut Kohl’s major and longtime unthinkable political performance – the unification of Germany in 1990. This historical event was the result of favorable historical contingencies, together with the far-reaching voluntarism of both Kohl himself and Mikhail Gorbachev, President of the Soviet Union. Schlingensief frames it as a political crime and his author as a subject for ridicule.
