THE CLARKSON SERIES: The Saints snapped a three game winless streak against the Golden Knights with their 2-2 tie on Friday night and won for the first time in the last eight meet- ings when they took the Saturday decision in Potsdam in the non-league series earlier this season. Clarkson is now 9-2-2 against the Saints since SLU won two out of three in a ECAC playoff series to end the 2009-10 season. Overall the Knights lead the series 120-66-11 and are 51-37-4 in 102 previous games in Canton, 45-33-4 at Appleton.

MORE FIRSTS: Kyle Hayton became the first Saint goaltender to shut out Clarkson in Potsdam since Bill Sloan in January of 1953 with his 30 stops in the last meeting. Hayton, who set the rookie record for shutouts in a season and tied the program record, was named ECAC Rookie of the Month for the second consecutive month after going 5-2-0 with a 1.70 goals against average on a .940 save percentage in November. He is the first SLU player to win back-to-back league monthly awards since the inception of that program.

BROTHER ACTS: The Saints have a pair of brothers on the roster for the 10th straight year as while Greg Carey graduated and Matt Carey departed for the pros after last season, step-brothers Christian Horn and Patrick Steinhauser join the squad this season. The Careys played last year, brothers George and Gunnar Hughes played together for the Saints in 2012-13 and 2011-12, Sean and Kyle Flanagan and Pat and Matt Raley were teammates in 2010-11, Derek and Jared Keller played together from 2007-08 to 2009-10, and Mark and Paul Wallmann played for the Saints from 2004-05 to 2006-07. Other brother acts who have played together for the Saints have included the Lappins...Pete and Tim from 1984-85 to 1988-89 and Mike and Chris in 1990-91 and 1991-92, the Harneys, Jake and Justin from 1996-00, the Muir twins, Mike and Sean from 1998-02, plus Eric and Martin Lacroix in the 1990s, Bill and Mike Gerrie and Dean and Dick Popiel in the 1980s. In six of the brother pairings since 1987, one has been an All Ameri- ca...Greg Carey was a repeat All America and a Hobey Baker “Hobey Hat Trick” finalist last season. Pete Lappin was a two-time All America, Mike Lappin earned All America as a senior as did Justin Harney, Sean Flanagan and George Hughes. Pete and Tim Lappin are third on the all-time scoring list for brothers who have played together with 315 points (Pete 187, Tim 128). SPECIAL TEAMS: The Saints led the nation in power play success last season and despite losing the bulk of their power play scorers to graduation or the pros, they have been as high as seventh in the nation to start the year, but are currently in a slump with just one power play goal in their last 17 chances. The Saint penalty kill was a problem area last year, but has started out the year well for the Saints as they are 19th nationally at 87.3 percent through 14 games, successful on 55 of 63 power plays. The Saints are ranked eighth in the nation in offense at 3.43 goals per game, are tied for 18th in defense nationally at 2.14 and are eighth in scoring margin at 1.29.

SPREAD THE WEALTH: While the Saints had three big scorers last season, it has been offense by committee thus far this season as the Saints have 48 goals scored and 21 different players among the goal scorers. Pat Doherty leads with five goals while two have four, four have three and nine players have two each. A total of 22 players have at least one point thus far this season.

IN THE BALLPARK: Despite the loss of some potent scoring power from last season’s team, the current 8-5-1 start to the season is in line with the start in each of the last two seasons. The Saints were 7-5-2 in the first 14 in 2012-13 and the same in 2013-14. SLU is .51 behind last year’s offensive average through 14 games and well ahead of the 2012-13 output through 12 and its team goals against of 2.11 is significantly better than in each of the last two seasons.

NHL CONNECTIONS: Former Saint Rich Peverley (), Brandon Bollig ( Blackhawks) and Mike McKenna (Columbus Bluejackets) were the only Saints playing in the NHL last season with a number of players playing in the AHL, ECHL or other professional leagues.
