2019-20 School Profile Mission & Student Demographics Cristo Rey San José (CRSJ) is a Jesuit, Catholic high school that empowers students from underserved communities in San José to be men and women for others who are prepared spiritually, academically, and professionally to complete college and who will become accomplished leaders committed to a lifelong pursuit of learning, faith, and justice. All CRSJ students come from low- income families. Over 70% of the school population is eligible for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program. The high cost of housing in the Bay Area distorts household income relative to national averages. The Corporate Work Study Program As part of the Cristo Rey Network, CRSJ students participate in a Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). Student go to work 5 days each month during the school year to help cover the cost of their college prep education. As a result, students typically have 4 days of classes per week, and most will graduate with over 1,000 hours of work experience. Academic & Professional Foundations Incoming Cristo Rey Students participate in a 5-week Summer Bridge program. Students are typically assessed at entry as being one or two years below grade level in English and Math skills. Summer classes enrich academic proficiency and train students with the skills necessary for Corporate Work Study assignments, including professional etiquette and software applications.

Blended Learning Cristo Rey’s academic model uses cutting edge technology to adapt to individual student needs. All students are pushed to a rigorous college prep experience. Classes utilize Chromebooks and online technology to aid instruction. Blended learning programs guide remedial instruction allowing teachers to focus on the development of critical thinking skills.

Advanced Placement (AP) & Honors (grade level, if restricted) Nine Advanced Placement and two Honors classes were offered: AP World History (10), AP US History (11), AP English Language & Composition (11), AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Computer Science (12), Honors Physics (12), AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics (11, online course), AP Seminar (11), AP Psychology (12), English IV Honors (12)

Transcript Any score below 70% is a failing grade. “D” letter grades are only indicated if a student transfers to a different high school. A letter grade for 10 units of credit (equivalent to a full year of content) is assigned when the student demonstrates proficiency in the subject. Beginning in 2017-18, all courses are reported using year-long grades. Math classes grades are listed as IP (In Progress) on the transcript until competency is demonstrated. GPA calculations on the transcript do not include a failing grade if the course has been repeated. Coursework completed at other schools is not calculated into reported GPAs, and not listed on the transcript.

Academic Constraints § Library resources and free periods are not offered § Structured faculty office hours were not implemented until 2018-19 § Students attend classes 4 days per week between 8am – 4pm to participate in the Corporate Work Study Program § Students are encouraged to stretch academically with AP classes, course placement is limited by class size/schedule § AP subjects are offered to one grade level with the exception of Spanish Language & Culture § AP Statistics and AP Calculus BC are offered through an online curriculum with limited faculty support § Students are not able to repeat/recover AP or honors coursework during summer school § Visual and Performing Arts electives, required for all CA high school students, were not offered prior to 2017-18 § Business Math is only offered as an independent study class when students finish another topic early

Community Service: 9th & 10th grade students are introduced to theme-based service projects each trimester. 20 hours of service per year is required for 11th & 12th grade. Service activities for 12th grade students are not coordinated by the school. Seniors are expected to identify an eligible agency and complete direct service to marginalized individuals or the environment.
