Swedish Royal Ancestry Book 4 1751-Present
GRANHOLM GENEALOGY SWEDISH ANCESTRY Recent Royalty (1751 - Present) INTRODUCTION Our Swedish ancestry is quite comprehensive as it covers a broad range of the history. For simplicity the information has been presented in four different books. Book 1 – Mythical to Viking Era (? – 1250) Book 2 – Folkunga Dynasty (1250 – 1523) Book 3 – Vasa Dynasty (1523 – 1751) Book 4 – Recent Royalty (1751 – Present) Book 4 covers the most recent history including the wars with Russia that eventually led to the loss of Finland to Russia and the emergence of Finland as an independent nation as well as the history of Sweden during World Wars I and II. A list is included showing our relationship with the royal family according to the lineage from Nils Kettilsson Vasa. The relationship with the spouses is also shown although these are from different ancestral lineages. Text is included for those which are highlighted in the list. The Architecture of Joseph Michael Gandy (1771-1843) and Sir John Soane (1753-1837): An Exploration Into the Masonic and Occult Imagination of the Late Enlightenment Abstract In examining select works of English architects Joseph Michael Gandy and Sir John Soane, this dissertation is intended to bring to light several important parallels between architectural theory and freemasonry during the late Enlightenment. Both architects developed architectural theories regarding the universal origins of architecture in an attempt to establish order as well as transcend the emerging historicism of the early nineteenth century. There are strong parallels between Soane's use of architectural narrative and his discussion of architectural 'model' in relation to Gandy's understanding of 'trans-historical' architecture. The primary textual sources discussed in this thesis include Soane's Lectures on Architecture, delivered at the Royal Academy from 1809 to 1836, and Gandy's unpublished treatise entitled the Art, Philosophy, and Science of Architecture, circa 1826. -

They are the work of artists of many nationalities—Italian, French, English, Dutch, Flemish, and German—but all were executed in Rome in the course of the century. The city retained in the 1700's its position as a major artistic center, though outdistanced by Paris for first place. Rome continued to be the city to which artists came to learn, by studying and copying the ruins of Classical Antiquity and the great works of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Papal and princely patronage continued to attract artists from all Europe, but commissions were no longer on the very grand scale of previous centuries. History painting remained a Roman specialty, occupying the highest rank in the hierarchy of painting. Preparatory drawings for major projects by Giuseppe Chiari, Pompeo Batoni, Benedetto Luti, and the Frenchman Pierre Subleyras document this side of Roman production. Sculpture flourished—witness drawings by Pietro Bracci and Camillo Rusconi for important tombs, and Luigi Vanvitelli's designs for the throne of St. -

PIRANESI 3^ ARTHUR SAMUEL LONDON B.TBATSFORa94.HIGH HOLBORN NEW YORK •> CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS'^ MCMX THE LIBRARY BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY PROVO, UTAH i TO THE READER For some years past I have admired and collected the etchings of Piranesi, and feeling a desire to know more about this wonderful man and his son Francesco, I have gathered together such facts as are available. The result is this monograph which deals not only with the etchings which are, for the most part, of views of Rome and its ancient remains, but also with the influence the etchings have had upon the architecture and decorative schemes associated with the names of the brothers Adam, and upon the furniture designs of Chippendale, Sheraton and their successors. The monograph must, however, be read VI only on the distinct understanding that the composition of its pages contains nothing original so far as I am concerned. If the result of the perusal be satisfactory to the reader the credit will not be mine ; if, on the other hand, it be unsatisfactory I shall be ready to accept responsibility. I have levied toll upon every available work of authority, standard or otherwise, in English, French and Italian, and whatever I have found I have taken, lock, stock and barrel, and with such catholicity that, for fear of placing too exhausting a strain upon my printer's supply of subsidiary types, I have not given references, and I have not used as many inverted commas as I ought other- wise to have done.
