Dear Mr. Kumar:

Greehngs from llT Jodhpur.. .!!

This is reference in towards the DO letter no. M. 65022/012020-^WW375; dated 10 lune 2020. In this regard it is to inform that the various measures adopted at IIT Jodhpur towards water conservation and rain water harvesting are:

1. Rain Water Harvesting: ' The Roof top rain water in the Hostels is collected in the storage tanks constructed in each hostel. The stored water is further utilized for irrigation purposes. In Academic Buildings and other Residential Buildings, the roof top rain water is discharged in the Swale which carries the water to the pond outside the Campus. o All the surface run-off water is routed and stored in the pond through swales which connects the entire Campus. The Pond water is utilized by the nearby villages.

2. Domestic Waste Water: o The Black and Grey Water generated from the Housing Complexes, Academic Buildings and Hostels are treated through De-Centralized anaerobic Waste Water treatment system (DWTS) and recycled. The recycled water is used for irrigation, flushing and HVAC related purPose.

3. Efficient Fiftings and Fixtures: o The water demand is further reduced by using efficient faucets and fittings; . Dual Flush system in water Closets reduces the water consumption; and o Use of aerator fitted taps and health faucets further reduces water demand.

4. Use of Pop-up system and drip irrigation: o To water the plant and lawns in the Gardens and sports fields pop-up irrigation system and drip irrigation further reduces the water consumption and ensures effective use of water.

DIJ'- '^ $1r ' % \\* ,YnL' z ]*\or)]}p { \r Apart from this necessary guidelines are also issued to the IIT Jodhpur community from time to time to save water and reduce the wastage of water.

Particularly dunng the night tinre. Subscquortly. on March 15,2020, a flcld visit u,as undcrtakcrr by thc pro.icct tcaur in tlrc Uppcr (U(iC) command area located in the Narsan Block of District Haridwar to identify a feasible site for the project. The details of the filed visit are given as Annexure-I (Art. 5-5).

During the field visit, the project team has found site feasible for taking up R&D studies in view of the following: ) Both surface water and groundwater are being used for irrigation. Surface water is being provided by Upper Ganga canal irrigation system whereas groundwater is provided through tlre pumping of the private tube well. F For this site, farmers are practicing agricultural operation effectively. ) The area is not vulnerable to animal menace and the crop yield would not be affected on account of this. ) The site is located about l6 km away from the IIT Roorkee campus and it is well connected through cemented approach road. It would be extremely easy to commute every day by the project personal on such road even during the monsoon season. ) The project personals may be able to visit every day to take the observations from the instruments to be installed in the field. They may return and stay safely in the accommodation provided by the IIT Roorkee. ) Due to the excellent approach road, it would be easier to arrange the demonstration of the project highlighting its success stories, which is happened to be one of the objectives of the project. F The matter was discussed by the visiting team with the local people regarding the security of the advanced equipment proposed to be installed under the project. It was informed to the team members that the area would not be much vulnerable to the security as it is close to the residential area of the village. However, as a precautionary measure, additional security alTangements would be made to reinforce the security of the equipment's particularly during the night-time. Furthermore, due to COVID-19 Pandemic, presently, it is not safe for frequent travel by the project team in Bargi Command Area and it is extremely difficult to get the logistic supports there under the prevailing situation. As it is a field-based R&D project, and requires installation of advanced equipment, and continuous monitoring of the required data, hence continuous presence of some trained project staff is must at the site. Also, regular monitoring must be carried out by some of the senior members of the project team. Some of the equipment have been procured and those are available with us. Thus, due to COVID-I9 and other reasons mentioned above, it is proposed to take up study for a pilot area under the Upper Ganga canal command area located in the Narsan Block of District Haridwaq Uttarakhand close to IIT Roorkee without compromising the objectives and scope of the study instead of taking it in Bargi Command Area, Jabalpur, M.P. It will help us to start the project activities immediately to achieve desired objectives within the stipulated time frame.

In view of the above, I request you to kindly permit us to take up the study in Upper Ganga Canal command area located in the Narsan Block of District Haridwar, Uttarakhand near IIT Roorkee in place of the study area in the Bargi command area located in Jabalpur, M.P. I am expecting the favourable response at the earliest for initiating the project activities in the field without much delay.

Thanking you

No.2rJ0 1 /1 3/RCH/N SG-Engg/20 t o t J OT Dated, the 20'r' .ltrly, 2020 Sh"r'f Dear 4a"f Krrmogt j, ,

This is in reference to your DO letter M.65022101120201NWM/1358 dated 1Oth June 2020. tt gives me immense pleasure in conveying that NSG has always been conscious of its responsibilities towards protection of environment. 2. NSG, in all its infrastructure developrnent works across various campuses throughout the country, has been incorporating the rainwater harvesting for natural ground water recharge apart from providing STPs for recycling of waste water for re-use as well as carrying out exhaustive plantation of trees. A brief of such activities carried out till now is placed at Annexure-A for ready reference. 3. Currently, NSG has taken iip the task of massive tree plantation as part of "Green Aravali" project to rejuvenate the highly degraded green cover on the ancient hills. Lakhs of trees are being planted and raised on the barren hill features surrounding NSG Manesar The project is being executed nct cnly by NSG troops but also with enthusiastic Campus. 'Ihis participation of village communities in cur neighbourhood. includes greening of more than 500 Acres of Aravali Hills which stancl denuded due to unchecked mi:ring acttvities over the years. 4. To take our initiatives for envrronmental improvement to a higher platforin, rrye look foruuard to this opportunity of associating with your Ministry's flagship progldnt?i^res and would request for arranging experts from your rlinistry for guiding NSG on "Wa.ter Shed Management" in these hills for harnessing the full potential of rainwater and would alsrt request for arranging to provide the required funds to the extent possible for taking up sucit works of check dam etc. as parl of the "Catch the Rain" project ttndei'tlre aeg;ls of ycur ministry/department.

5. Looking fonruard to an early favourable response please. With tr. .l tr, tsfic.9 I ' Yours Gn. fft y\-4' \: 1o1 D (Antrp Kttmar Singh) ,'kr, e)/ >ti/rr'c. asox KiirflAR, tAS Addl. Actions Taken and Achievements of NSG in harnessing rain water for ground water recharge, use of treated greywater for horticulture purposes and flushing etc. are as follows:-

(i) An exhaustive rain water harvesting system including a network of catch drains and 40 Nos. recharge wells has been constructed in the NSG Manesar campus and is being maintained and kept functional to recharge the ground water by tapping the rain water collected through storm water drains. Similar, arrangements have also been made at other NSG locations including HQ NSG at Palam for rain water harvesting.

(ii) Further, digital topographic survey of Manesar Campus has also been carried out in the year 2019 which facilitated improvement in the connectivity between rain water harvesting system and the storm water drains in line with contours of the area.

(iii) Dual piping system inside the campus building is also being ensured in all new constructions so that greywater from kitchens and bathrooms after treatment can be used for flushing purposes also. Separate piping for use of treated water from STP is already in place at all campuses of NSG for irrigation of parks and gardens. Now 64 quarters under construction at NSG Hub Chennai are being provided with dual piping system to use treated STP water for flushing in the toilets also.

(iv) ln the event of heavier rain than the usual, spill over rain water from the drains and harvesting wells, is being collected at small ponds dug at different places and they are being maintained regularly.

(v) Provision to collect the rain water from roof top of the building for recharging the ground water also exists in Chennai Hub and similar provisions have been made for all new constructions'
