A Tribute to Southwest Foundation Contributors

A PUBLICX SOUTHWEST FOUNDATION BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH ON THE COVER

A tribute to our Southwest Foundation contributors would not be complete without recognizing the man whose generous contributions made the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research a reality, Thomas Baker Slick, Jr.

A true Renaissance man, Tom Slick put vision and action together. In many respects, his life was the life of which legends are made. A visionary, genius, inventor, oilman, rancher, engineer, philanthropist, peacemaker and adventurer, Mr. Slick became an important and colorful part of 's modem era.

When Mr. Slick was 25, be established the THOMA::- BAKER SLIL"K, ]R. Foundation of Applied Research by a trust 1916- 1962 indenture on December 16, 1941. Endowed with I ,875 shares of the Slick-Urschel Oil Company, the Foundation of Applied Research was later succeeded by the Southwest Foundation for Research and Education in 1952. In 1984, the name was changed to the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research.

Although he was only 46 when he died in an airplane crash in Montana in October 1962, Mr. Slick's enduring legacy lives on today in three premier organizations: the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, Southwest Research Institute and the Mind Science Foundation. This issue of Progress in Biomedical Research is dedicated to our many supporters, whose generous contributions support Southwest Foundation scientists in their quest to improve human health through research on the detection, cause, prevention, cure and eradication of disease.

When you contribute to the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, you are helping our scientists look for answers to heart and lung diseases, can- ~ cer, AIDS, viral hepatitis and other infec- V ~ tious diseases, and the role of genetics in ~ human diseases. In short, you are making an \~ · investment in the future health of humanity.

~ At Southwest Foundation, we are making a significant investment in the future ~ with our 10-year, $30 million Modernization Plan. As an international leader in t\ ...... _ · biomedical research, Southwest Foundation must strive to be on the cutting ~ edge of research. To accomplish that daunting task takes top-notch scientists, ~ state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, and the financial strength to support ~ research programs.

~ In the fall, we will break ground on the Betty Slick & Lewis J Moorman, Jr. ' ~ Laboratory, a 34,000-square-foot laboratory complex to house our rapidly expanding Department of Virology and Immunology. This high-tech lab is part of the first phase of our Modernization Plan, a plan that will elevate our search for the betterment of human health to new levels.

By acquiring cutting-edge equipment and updating our facilities to meet the demands of today's high-tech research, the team of scientists at Southwest Foundation will find more ample avenues to explore and discover. Their already significant contributions will go further with more sophisticated technology. And our improvements will ultimately benefit all of mankind.

I thank all of you who have joined us on our challenging voyage to new scientific boundaries through your generous contributions.

Contributions from The Golden Circle provide Southwest Foundation scientists with a significant competitive advantage. Acting as "seed money," every dollar from The Golden Circle given to Southwest Foundation will leverage at least six more dollars in new research program support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other sources.

Since its inception in 1977, The Golden Circle has contributed more than $27 million to Southwest Foundation's research programs. Individuals, corporations and foundations who believe in the continuing value of basic biomedical research belong to the group.

The Golden Circle recognizes major donors who have contributed $1,000 annually to Southwest Foundation. The Corporate Circle is the business equivalent of The Golden Circle, with membership based on a minimum gift of $2,500 per year. The President's Circle, which augments the philanthropic level of The Golden Circle, is based on an unrestricted, tax-deductible donation of $5,000 or more per year.

Southwest Foundation's annual recognition dinner for Golden Circle members is always given on two nights because of The Argyle's intimate size. Like The Golden Circle, the unique private dining club is a support group for Southwest Foundation. The three-story mansion, purchased by Southwest Foundation in 1955, was recorded as a Texas historical landmark in 1972.

PROGRESS IN BIOMEDIC!JL RESEARCH • 9 OBESITY

The third example that I've chosen as a highlight is a research program called the San Antonio Family Heart Study, which is directed by Dr. Jean MacCluer.

This is a study of 1,400 Mexican Americans who belong to 40 large extended families living here in San Antonio. The intent of the study is to identify the genes that control risk of heart disease, risk of diabetes, and risk of obesity.

Obesity, like melanoma, is a disease that is increasing rapidly in our society, and as with melanoma, obesity is an even bigger problem here than in much of the rest of the country. In fact, Standing in front of the portrait of Jean Darn, San Antonio has the dubious distinction of being Kay and Jon Sandidge look forward to rated the third-fattest city in the country. The final example I've chosen as a highlight is a study that Dr. Kris Murthy has just begun, to assess the safety and potential side effects of a novel treatment for B-celllymphoma, a form of leukemia.

The treatment involves injecting into the blood of the patient, an antibody that kills the leukemic white blood cells, but does not affect normal white blood cells.

Wftp: This high-profile scientific meeting brought together prominent scientists from around the world to discuss recent developments in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biolo gy, evolutionary biology and other related fields. Genetic variation and genome evolution of humans, other animal species and plants was emphasized.

The multidisciplinary nature of this Congress promoted cross-fertilization among the disci plines of the biology represented and among scientists working with different organisms. Congress participants were from a diverse group of international research and education institutions, medical schools au'd biotechnology companies.

Formerly known as the International Congress on Isozymes, this series has been presented throughout the world since its inception in 1961. Beginning with the 9th Congress, the name of the series has been changed to reflect the broadened scope of this field. The new name, which emphasizes modem approaches and recent progress in research on genes and their products, marks an important transition in the series. The San Antonio meeting was the first time since 1982 that the Congress has been convened in the United States.

The 9th International Congress on Genes, Gene Families and Isozymes was made possible with the generous support of both the scientific and San Antonio communities. Individuals, philanthropic foundations, corporations, businesses and government-granting agencies joined together to enable Southwest Foundation and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to serve as the host organizations for the Congress.
