INTRODUCTION The Lukanji Regional Water Feasibility Supply Study, commissioned by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF), commenced in March 2003. The main aim of the study is to review the findings of earlier studies and, taking cognisance of new developments and priorities that have been identified in the study area, to make a firm recommendation on the next augmentation scheme to be developed for the supply of water to the urban complexes of Queenstown and Sada-Whittlesea following the implementation of a suitable water demand management programme. In addition, proposed operating rules will be identified for the existing water supply schemes and the augmentation scheme to provide for the ecological component of the Reserve and the equitable distribution of water between rural domestic and urban water supplies and irrigators. -

Situation Assessment for the Upper Kei Sub-Area
5.1 5. SITUATION ASSESSMENT FOR THE UPPER KEI SUB- AREA 5.1 General Overview 5.1.1 Topography and Rivers The Upper Kei sub-area comprises the upper portion of the Great Kei catchment down to the confluence of the Black and White Kei Rivers. It consists of the S10, S20, S31 and S32 quaternary catchments. The main rivers are : • The White Kei River (S10) • The Indwe River (S20) • The Klaas Smits and Heuningklip Rivers (S31) • The Black Kei and Klipplaat Rivers (S32) Figure 5.1 The Upper Kei Sub-area The Upper Kei catchment is approximately 11 500 km2 in extent. This is 55,8% of the total Great Kei catchment area of 20 699 km2. The area falls within the inland plateau topographical zone and occupies a broad undulating plateau with river valleys. The catchment area, which is almost circular in shape is contained by the Amatola mountain range in the south, the Winterberg in the east and the Stormberg in the north with the outlet of the catchment in the southeast. The altitude of the plateau lies between 1100 and 1400 masl with the surrounding mountains varying from 1900 masl in the south to 2100 masl in the north. 5.2 5.1.2 Climate and Rainfall The climate in the catchment is very harsh, varying from hot and dry in the summer months (> 400 C) to very cold in the winter months (-100 C minima). Widespread frost and snowfalls on the high lying ground are experienced in winter. There is a high temporal and spatial variation in rainfall over the catchment. -

Gaulana EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The main objective of the South African National Aquatic Environmental Health Monitoring Programme (NAEHMP) makes use of the instream and riparian biological communities like vegetation, invertebrates and fish to assess the ecological ‘health’ of rivers as well as physical attributes or drivers of the ecosystem like hydrology, geomorphology and water quality. These biological communities are always found in rivers and they are often affected by any disturbance that occurs in the river ecosystem. This report provides the results of the biomonitoring survey that was undertaken in in the Great Kei River Basin in February 2009 (Summer survey). Field indices used for data collection included the Geomorphology, Water Quality, South African Scoring System version 5.0 (SASS5) for macro invertebrates, and the Fish Assemblage Integrity Index (FAII) for fish. The Department: Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF): Eastern Cape National Aquatic Environmental Health Monitoring Programme (former RHP) involves the use of Biomonitoring as a tool to determine the health of the aquatic ecosystems. The programme aims to promote standardized and continuous monitoring and reporting on the Eastern Cape rivers ecosystem health. The Great Kei River is one of the systems monitored by the Eastern Cape DWAF, hence monitoring survey was conducted. This report provides information on the Present Ecological State of the Great Kei River Basin. -
