News for our LIHSA Families

Remote Edition: April 8, 2020

Mandated Statewide School Closure Extended

Governor has extended the mandated statewide school closure until April 29. Nassau BOCES will continue to provide remote instruction during this time, including what was previously spring recess April 9 through 17.

Remote Learning

LIHSA Remote Learning: A New Landscape None one of us could have imagined this moment in our biography when the year began. Through this difficult time, I am very proud of how LIHSA’s community has embraced and adapted to our changing instructional landscape.

LIHSA: Part of Nassau BOCES LIHSA is part of Nassau BOCES, an agency that contracts services to school districts. Because of its unique mission, the threshold to demonstrate the delivery of contracted services with robust accountability measures is of paramount importance. Pedagogically, we feel the imperative during this time is to provide students with avenues to engage in art making. The best way to do this is through what is known as synchronous (live) instruction.

We will be starting the following on Monday, April 13. In observance of holidays this week, school is open but Thursday and Friday, teachers will not be logging in with direct instruction and will instead post long-term assignments.

Synchronous (Live) Instruction In our remote learning environment, teachers are very much aware of the need for establishing a teaching presence that facilitates and directs the learning process in ways that engage students in active and authentic learning experiences. A key element of education is intellectual engagement by students with others – faculty and fellow students. Live sessions offer the opportunity for student mixing, and we believe that the additional perspectives of the larger, more diverse student body benefit all our students. Demonstrations have always been a mainstay when it comes to conveying certain concepts and processes at LIHSA. They are also among the instructional methods enhanced by the virtual learning environment. Further, they allow for a continuity of master classes and artistic residencies.

How the School Day Works: Communication Tools LIHSA’s remote learning utilizes two communication platforms—School Tool Teacher pages (our student information system) and the Remind application. Utilizing these tools, teachers set expectations, provide invitations to session, post files and more. Information about these tools can be found at: https://www.longislandhighschoolforthearts.org/online-learning-during- school-closure

How the School Day Works: Delivery of Content Teachers provide invitations, using the aforementioned communication tools, to Zoom lessons during their regularly scheduled class times.T hese sessions are recorded, and links will be made to students if they are absent, after outreach is done by teacher to determine what barriers exist to student participation. These links will be deleted weekly. Students have a 24-hour cycle to be marked present for the class. That means, that within the span of a day, students must view the recording and complete academic requirements set forth by the teacher.

How the School Day Works: Faculty Hours Teachers are available during their regularly scheduling work hours to answer questions that may arise. This chart has a link to all the information regarding teacher contact and days of employment: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a71c9632aeba526514cba96/t/5e8b4d4e1e807 97db5128b23/1586187598526/LIHSA+Teacher+Contacts+%281%29.pdf.

How the School Day Works: Class Participation and Extra Credit LIHSA has created a Remote Learning Class Participation rubric, so everyone can best understand how their level of participation is related to progress in a course. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a71c9632aeba526514cba96/t/5e8365 027c632a3f79701b08/1585669380270/LIHSA%2BRemote%2BLearning%2BClass%2 BParticpation%2BRubric.pdf

In addition, extra credit can be earned in two ways—for students who are present during their scheduled class time, 3 points per day will be earned on top of the rubric scoring. Students can still complete an extra credit assignment by participating in a remote visit to a museum or recorded performance. https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a71c9632aeba526514cba96/t/5e134fee0aba0 c74bab0ad43/1578323951003/LIHSA+Extra+Credit+Assignment+%281%29.pdf

There are numerous opportunities to engage with cultural institutions remotely, and we are sharing material in our newsletter and with our faculty.

How the School Day Works: Other Communication If you have a question about a class, please speak with the class instructor first.

Newsletter LIHSA’s weekly newsletter, has now transformed into a twice weekly bulletin. Students and families should be receiving these on Tuesdays and Fridays—if you are not receiving them, please email Barbara Del Monaco at [email protected]. In addition, they are archived regularly and can be read here: https://www.longislandhighschoolforthearts.org/news-1. The exception is this week where you'll receive just this one newsletter because of the holiday observances.

Attendance Parents can email Barbara DelMonaco at [email protected] to “call in sick” for a child. Please email her earlier in the day, even if your child participates in the afternoon session. Ms. DelMonaco is still serving as the Main Office and can be a good place to reach out with questions that do not relate to a class.

Guidance Parents and students can email Ms. Stencel at [email protected], to discuss how they are feeling, helping to resolve barriers they are facing to participation and/or schedule junior college conferences.

Master Class: Taylor Hogan Songwriting Students enjoyed a Master Class with LIHSA Alum Taylor Hogan who is now a Nashville-based Singer-Songwriter on Monday.

Students watched a introductory video from Taylor on YouTube with information about her career and background in songwriting including being a one of Kimberly Larkin's LIHSA students from Massapequa. She shared her passion for country music and discussed her journey from Long Island to Nashville. Students also watched a clip of her music and then met her for a Q&A on Zoom. Students learned so much about the business from Taylor and she offered to give them feedback on their music if they email it to her. They class was arranged by their teacher Kimberly Larkin. www.taylorhoganmusic.com @taylorhoganmusic

On-Line Classes

Nikon has made its entire curriculum of online photography classes free until the end of April. Now through April 30th, all 10 classes available at the Nikon School can be streamed for free. The classes are normally priced anywhere between $15 to $50 each. Each class is taught by a professional photographer and provides in-depth lessons to help you get better at taking photos. Some courses cover Nikon-specific products, but many of them teach you the fundamentals of photography, such as a course that teaches you how to photograph your children or pets or the basics of making a music video. So even if you don’t own a Nikon camera, many of these classes might still be worth a watch. If you’re interested in streaming the courses, you can do so by going to Nikon’s official website. You will need to sign up by entering your name and email address before you can view the classes, but you can opt out of receiving marketing emails.
