Colin and Mitch, both disappointed by their work and unsuccessful relationships, take to foreign parts in order to escape the isolation they feel. Once friends, they have drifted apart over the years. Each of them has lost the people closest to them and each is looking for some kind of connection. That sets the stage for turning loose two guys who sometimes can’t stand each other, but who desperately need each other. Like many of us, Colin and Mitch strive to find happiness in exploring new territories, connecting to the land, and briefly existing in another life. These men want to escape their circumstances, to feel alive and invigorated, but find that, no matter how far they are from home, the grass is always greener. It’s hard to fully appreciate the moment when one is right in the thick of it. This strange human contradiction is equally humorous and heartbreaking, much like Colin and Mitch’s story. When comedy arises from people genuinely interacting with each other and their environment, it does more than generate laughter. -

However, her arresting looks and glamorous life stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved as an ingenious inventor whose pioneering work helped revolutionize modern communication. Mislabeled as “just another pretty face,” Hedy’s true legacy is that of a technological trailblazer. She was an Austrian Jewish emigre who invented a covert communication system to try and help defeat the Nazis, then gave her patent to the Navy, but was ignored and told to sell kisses for war bonds instead. It was only towards the very end of her life that tech pioneers discovered her concept which is now used as the basis for secure WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth. Hedy never publicly talked about her life as an inventor and so her family thought her story died when she did. But in 2016, director Alexandra Dean and producer Adam Haggiag unearthed four never-before-heard audio tapes of Hedy speaking on the record about her incredible life. Combining this newly discovered interview with intimate reflections from her children, closest friends, family and admirers, including Mel Brooks and Robert Osborne, BOMBSHELL (executive produced by Susan Sarandon, Michael Kantor and Regina Scully) finally gives Hedy Lamarr the chance to tell her own story. -

Kicking off our 25th anniversary last October with quite possibly our most memorable Festival ever and continuing through last month with screenings at the Prince and Roxy, celebrating PFF25 has been a year to remember. From the Opening Night magic of La La Land (with Damien Chazelle in attendance) to the brilliance of Moonlight to the presentation of our inaugural Lumière award to M. Night Shyamalan, last year’s Festival set the tone of our exciting anniversary year. We’ve worked hard over this year to bring both the Prince and Roxy into the celebration. The Roxy played home to our 25 for 25 screening series, featuring some of our favorite films from the past 25 years of Philadelphia Film Festivals, as well as delivering new films from Festival alumni on a week-in, week-out basis. Likewise, the Prince hosted our annual Oscar party celebrating the great success of many films that had their Philadelphia premieres with last October’s Festival, as well as a selection of curated films and events throughout the year. Even more significantly, this past summer we installed brand new, top of the line audio-visual equipment in the Black Box at the Prince, allowing us to program much more film content in the venue. We very much look forward to unveiling extensive film programming following this year’s Festival. -

Photo Credit - Craig Weiman Since 2014 this page has featured a picture of Baltimore’s historic movie theater, the Parkway, opened in 1915 at the dawn of feature film. The Parkway served Baltimore- area moviegoers with different programming missions until it closed as an art-house cinema in 1978. We’ve been working on this project since 2011, and now you get a chance to experience the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Parkway as it begins its new life as a 21st century hub for filmmakers—emerging and established—and audiences. We know of no movie theater quite like it; there aren’t many pure movie houses of this vintage left, and our renovation has underscored and preserved the dramatic changes the building went through as it served a variety of audiences, and as the movie art form itself evolved from silent film to the new digital age. The Parkway was once an elegant standout of about 150 movie theaters in Baltimore. Now, for the first time in its life, the Parkway is home to three state-of-the-art theaters—the gorgeous original auditorium plus two new screens built in an adjacent space—together with various lounges and food options. It will be a hub for a new film community in Baltimore, at almost the exact geographic center of the city. Regional audiences will have a chance to see many films that do not now come to Baltimore, and will continue the interaction with film artists that is a hallmark of our annual film festival and other events. Hopkins and MICA students are already contracted to use the building for film studies and showcasing student films.
