This ship participated in the 1990/91 Gulf War, peacekeeping operations in East Timor in 1999 and deployed to the Arabian Gulf as part of the International Coalition against Terrorism in 2001 and 2004. She was Australia’s first guided-missile frigate and was home-ported in Western Australia. McMahon Services were contracted by NSW Land & Property Management Authority to prepare the vessel for scuttling off the NSW mid coast. This was an enormous task – stripping a fully operational war ship to make it a virtual skeleton. All environmental hazards required total removal. We had to develop methods to make the vessel do what it was never design to do…sink. The vessel was littered with specially cut holes to let water in and air out when it was scuttled. The main task was to penetrate bulkheads and clearing pathways through the vessel so that divers had enough room to manoeuvre through safe thoroughfares. Wojcik Naval University of Gdynia, Poland Abstract The destroyer O.R.P. "Blyskawica" is a precious national relic, the only remaining ship that was built before World War I1 (WW2). On the 5oth Anniversary of its service under the Polish flag, it was honoured with the highest military decoration - the Gold Cross of the Virtuti Militari Medal. It has been the only such case in the whole history of the Polish Navy. Its our national hero, war-veteran and very "lucky" warship. "Blyskawica" took part in almost every important operation in Europe throughout WW2. It sailed and covered the Baltic Sea, North Sea, all the area around Great Britain, the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. During the war "Blyskawica" covered a distance of 148 thousand miles, guarded 83 convoys, carried out 108 operational patrols, participated in sinking two warships, damaged three submarines and certainly shot down four war-planes and quite probably three more. It was seriously damaged three times as a result of operational action. The crew casualties aggregated to a total of only 5 killed and 48 wounded petty officers and seamen, so it was a very "lucky" ship during WW2. In July 1947 the ship came back to Gdynia in Poland and started training activities. Having undergone rearmament and had a general overhaul, it became an anti-aircraft defence ship. In 1976 it replaced O.R.P. "Burza" as a Museum-Ship. -

1. Passage A Meeting with the Dutchman few minutes past 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 1942, a twin- Aengine Navy passenger plane broke through the low overcast blan- keting Washington, D.C., then banked over the Potomac River for the final approach to Anacostia Field. As the white dome of the Capitol loomed into view, Rear Admiral Henry Kent Hewitt allowed himself a small sigh of relief. Before dawn, Hewitt had decided to fly to Washing- ton from his headquarters near Norfolk rather than endure the five-hour drive across Virginia. But thick weather abruptly closed in, and for an anxious hour the aircraft had circled the capital, probing for a break in the clouds. Usually a man of genial forbearance, Hewitt chafed with impatience at the delay. President Roosevelt himself had summoned him to the White House for this secret meeting, and although the session was likely to be little more than a courtesy call, it would never do for the man chosen to strike the first American blow in the liberation of Europe to keep his commander-in-chief waiting. Kent Hewitt seemed an unlikely warrior. Now fifty-five, he had a high, bookish forehead and graying hair. Double chins formed a fleshy creel at his throat, and on a ship’s bridge, in his everyday uniform, he appeared “a fat, bedraggled figure in khaki,” as a British admiral once observed with more accuracy than kindness. Even the fine uniform he wore this morning fit like blue rummage, notwithstanding the flag officer’s gold braid that trimmed his cuffs. -

Color profile: Disabled Composite Default screen Appendix I A Chronological List of Cases Involving the Landing of United States Forces to Protect the Lives and Property of Nationals Abroad Prior to World War II* This Appendix contains a chronological list of pre-World War II cases in which the United States landed troops in foreign countries to pro- tect the lives and property of its nationals.1 Inclusion of a case does not nec- essarily imply that the exercise of forcible self-help was motivated solely, or even primarily, out of concern for US nationals.2 In many instances there is room for disagreement as to what motive predominated, but in all cases in- cluded herein the US forces involved afforded some measure of protection to US nationals or their property. The cases are listed according to the date of the first use of US forces. A case is included only where there was an actual physical landing to protect nationals who were the subject of, or were threatened by, immediate or po- tential danger. Thus, for example, cases involving the landing of troops to punish past transgressions, or for the ostensible purpose of protecting na- tionals at some remote time in the future, have been omitted. While an ef- fort to isolate individual fact situations has been made, there are a good number of situations involving multiple landings closely related in time or context which, for the sake of convenience, have been treated herein as sin- gle episodes. The list of cases is based primarily upon the sources cited following this paragraph. -

Abstract Postmortem Archaeology: Reinterpreting Salvaged Sites using the CSS Neuse as a Case Study By Chelsea Hauck April 2016 Director: Dr. Bradley Rodgers Department of History, Program in Maritime Studies Traditionally, salvaged wreck sites are disregarded by academia because contextual data are lost without detailed measured site maps. When these sites are ignored, the information that can be gained from individual artifacts and the collection as a whole is lost. Archaeologists have attempted to recreate salvaged sites to rediscover that contextual information. This thesis will examine a new set of methods called “postmortem” archaeology which will be applied to the American Civil War wreck of the CSS Neuse, which is the largest single collection of artifacts from a Confederate vessel. There are four issues affecting contextual data that have arisen since the salvage of the CSS Neuse wreck site: 1) how the ship was scuttled, 2) contamination by additional artifacts during excavation, 3) looting of artifacts during excavation, and 4) the timeline of the removal of the cannons. These four issues will serve as examples of broader problems that affect salvaged sites and possible methodologies that can be used to recreate the site. The “postmortem” methodology used to study the CSS Neuse can then be broadened and applied to other salvaged sites.
