Then, I will give some information about Virginia Woolf, Jeanette Winterson from English literature and Magda Szabo and Margit Kaffka from Hungarian literature and I shall elucidate examples from Woolf’s To the Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway, Winterson’s Sexing the Cherry, Szabo’s The Door and Iza’s Ballad and at last Kaffka’s Colours and Years. In the conclusion, I am going to summarize the important points of feminism in the chosen books. The reason why I chose this topic is because feminism as a movement gathered pace in the twentieth century and there is not any work about the comparison of Hungarian and English literature in terms of the representation of female characters in the selected novels. So I decided to fill the gap. (Simone de Beauvoir) INTRODUCTION Throughout history, the terms sex and gender have been frequently used interchangeably. Even though both of the terms are interconnected at heart to identify man and woman, this embran- gled usage of the terms have still been in use from the eighteenth century when the issue of femi- nism, the problematic position of women held sway. According to the World Health Organization regional office for Europe, “sex as characteristics that are biologically defined, whereas gender is based on socially constructed features” (ons.gov.uk). Witting states that “sex is taken as an “imme- diate given,” “a sensible given,” “physical features,” belonging to natural order” (Butler 114). Be- sides, the American Heritage Dictionary of English Language states that it is “the condition or char- acter of being female or male; the physiological, functional, and psychological differences that dis- tinguish the female and the male.” In the light of these definitions, it can be asserted that the term is basically associated with biological aspects of the human which marks a difference between man and woman in physical and psychological aspects of people. On the other hand, gender as a term differs from sex by implying the cultural and ideological aspects of people. Matsumoto asserts that “gender refers to the cultural, social, and psychological aspects of being defined as female or male” (216). Also, World Health Organization defines gender as refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are socially constructed. According to Butler, “Gender is the mechanism by which notions of masculine and feminine are produced and naturalized, but gender might very well be the apparatus by which such terms are deconstructed and denaturalized” (Butler 42, Undoing Gender). Linda Linsley states that 8 Gender refers to those social, cultural and psychological traits linked to males and females through particular social contexts. Sex makes us male or female; gender makes us masculine or feminine. Sex is an ascribed status because a person is born with it, but gender is an achieved status because it must be learned. (4) At this point, a question is raised that how gender can be learned. Matsumoto argues that A gender role is a learned set of behaviors associated with women or men. These be- haviors are so strongly associated with each sex that the set of behaviors comes to define masculinity and femininity in any given culture … Gender roles exist in all cultures, but the specific behaviors that are associated with the female or male gen- der role vary across cultures, making gender roles universal yet specific to each cul- ture. (217) As the statements made by different scholars can be seen above, although the definitions of sex and gender may differ from each other, they have been used interchangeably for a long time with a similar meaning. In short, while sex is a term which is related to the biological aspect of man and woman, gender marks the social difference between man and woman and their roles in societies. So, when it can be clearly observed throughout centuries, men are regarded as strong, ra- tional, superior, educated, and as breadwinner whereas women are considered to be weak, sensual, passive, obedient, nurturing and inferior. Tyson states that gender might very well be the apparatus “traditional gender roles cast men as rational, strong, protective and decisive; they cast women as emotional (irrational), weak, nurturing and submissive” (qtd in. Kaur 2). Although these construct- ed gender roles and identities are, today, attempted to be altered, the world of women was evidently limited in the domestic sphere where they were allowed to do the house work, to raise a child, and to perform their duties for their husbands in the past. These roles, identities and responsibilities which are attributed to women are clearly not inborn but rather culturally and ideologically con- structed by the patriarchal societies. Unfortunately, these roles are attributed to women as if they were born with these traits and thus they had to act according to these roles. 9 Herein, the significant part of these given roles and responsibilities is that they paved the way to loss of identities of women and feeling of inferiority against men, but how women were as- sociated with these negative connotations where almost all nations, cultures and countries under- reckonned women. Obviously, this long-lasting problem dates back to the creation of Adam and Eve. In the Genesis, “Adam said that this now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man”. On the basis of this statement, first of all, it can be said that women were created after men and women were not created in the same manner with man’s creation but rather she was derived from the part of man. Secondly, woman’s creation implies some degree of dependence of woman upon the man. Also, the need and purpose of the creation of woman depends on the creation of man as a helper to him. In the light of this, the ine- quality between man and woman prevails over centuries leaving woman no choice to stand on their two feet but rather be subject to man. Furthermore, during history, apart from being exposed to inequality, women have been associated with something evil and regarded as wicked creatures due to the fall of humankind when the first woman, Eve, lured man from Paradise. When we come to the Middle Ages, the hostility against women continues its dominance and in Ecclesiasticus, it is stated that “all malice is short to the malice of woman, let the lot of sinners fall upon her”. Besides, in the letters of Abelard and Heloise, it is written that “I found woman more bitter than death; she is snare, her heart a net, her arms are chains. He who is pleasing to God eludes her, but the sinner is her captive” (Gutenberg Project). On the basis of these statements, it is unquestionable truth that unfortunately, women have not received the value they indeed deserve to have. Due to this unjust treatment of women, they have never felt capable of raising their voice against inequality and asking for the rights they must have just like men. However, unfortunately, they have become more subservient and passive and constructed their identities in the sphere of the house where they can work for their husbands, fa- thers or brothers. In a way, they have created their identities by being contingent upon men in their lives. 10 Nevertheless, some women cannot stand the roles and identities given to them and protest against the government or institutions which set up the rules and limit women. They did not accept their roles in the domestic sphere only as a wife and mother which had been only deemed worthy to women, and they asked to have equal opportunities with men. As in the thesis, I will deal with the English and Hungarian female writers and their works in terms of the representation of female char- acters, it is appropriate to discuss feminism in both of the cultures.

CEU eTD Collection 3 Abstract This thesis investigates the connections between arts and politics in fin-de-siècle Hungary, as expressed in the writings of the First Nyugat Generation. Various elements of the cultural debate in which the Nyugat writers participated can illustrate the complexities of this relationship. These are the debate over the aesthetics of national literature, the urban-versus-rural discourse, and the definition of the national community. Through close reading of the Nyugat group’s writings on these topics, two themes are explored, relating to the ambivalence with which the Nyugat writers implemented their project of westernizing Hungarian culture. The first is the dominant presence of the nationalist discourse within an ostensibly cosmopolitan endeavor. This fits in with a general artistic trend of Hungarian modernism, and can be explained with reference to the ambiguous position of Hungary within Europe and the subsequent complexities present in the national discourse.

    Hungarian Studies Review, Vol. XXXIX, Nos. 1-2 (2012) Budapest and Its Heroines in Fin-de-Siècle Hungarian Literature Agatha Schwartz The end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, generally referred to as the fin de siècle, brought about dramatic shifts in the development of many a European city. Budapest experienced a rapid modernization as it was redefining itself as the capital of a nation that had finally acquired self- government after centuries of Habsburg domination. With the 1867 Compro- mise, Hungary received its long-coveted autonomy, and shared only foreign affairs, defence, and common customs and revenue policies with the Austrian half of the Habsburg state (Dreisziger 27). Budapest1 became the fastest growing city of the Dual Monarchy. Between 1870 and 1910, its population tripled in size, from 270,685 to 863, 735 (Sármány-Parsons 85), a rate of growth nine times faster than that of the country as a whole. Hungary needed to validate a capital different from Habsburg Vienna. Thus Budapest quickly developed into one of the most modern cities of Europe and into Hungary’s true economic and cultural centre. Its public transportation system was ahead of many other European cities: Budapest had an electrical tramway as early as 1889 and, in 1896, Swiss engineers built the first underground railway in continental Europe (Johnston 344). New boulevards crossed the centre of the city and many new buildings were erected, including the Parliament building, which was finished in 1902 and became the largest Parliament building in the world at the time (Lukacs 49).

LVI 2013, Z. 4 (224) PL ISSN 0025-1429 Éva Gyulai CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS AND SCENES IN MISKOLC, 1830–1930 Abstract In the Reform Age, the market town of Miskolc gained a distinguished cultural status in Hungary: it boasted a printing press, a permanent theatre, casinos, an 8-grade school, a famous seminar for young ladies, bookshops, a scholars’ private society and a liberal intellectual elite. During Dualism no buildings were erected for cultural purposes as culture was not top priority for the business elite. After WWI Miskolc acquired new social and cultural functions in the region, but some facilities were lacking: a Palace of Music was built, but there was still no public library. Key Words: Urbanization of Miskolc, cultural institutions, museum, casinos, cultural scenes. Słowa kluczowe: urbanizacja Miszkolca, instytucje kultury, muzea, kasyna, sceny teatralne. The century between 1830 and 1930 can be regarded as the age of modernisation for both Hungary and Miskolc. The investigation of such long historical periods brings us nearer to a successful comparative analysis of Central European cities and their level of urbanisation. It seems expedient to divide this century-long period into three parts in accordance with the events of both the national history of Hungary and the urban history of Miskolc. The first part, the period lasting from the 1830s to the 1860s, is called the Reform Age or the post-revolutionary period (following the Revolution of 1848) in Hungarian historiography. This period includes the final decades of the pre-modern social order as well as the first period of capitalism and embour- geoisement.

It deals with the intellectual activity of these exiles, especially through their cultural and educational institutions. Within five years of their arrival as dispossessed “D.P.’s,” they founded a Hungarian Center (“Centro Húngaro”) that housed, among others, a theater group, a free university, a cultural and scientific academy, a weekend school, and scout troops. At the same time, new periodicals appeared, and a substantive number of books banned in Hungary were published. I argue that it is due to the work of these institutions that the community flourished and is vital to date, in spite of its isolation and lack of reinforcement through new emigrant waves, and in spite of its hostile relationship with the government of the People’s Republic of Hungary and of a series of Argentine economic crises that forced many of its members to re-emigrate. I also discuss the impact the exiles had on their descendants, contending that as a result of the strong cultural foundations laid by them during their first twenty years of emigration, third- and fourth-generation Hungarian-Argentines have maintained to this day a strong cultural and ethnic identity, while fully integrating into Argentine society at large.

The topic and tasks of the research János Komáromi was born on 22nd December in 1890 in Málca. He studied at the lyceum of Sárospatak between 1902 and 1910 where he gained appreciation and honor among his teachers and fellow students. The first milestone in his authorship was considered to start when his article was published in “Szövétnek” in the school-year of 1907/06. Following the first successful publications, “Komár” – his pseudonym meaning “mosquito” in Slovakian – changed his name to János Komáromi with the 11367/1908 permission of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He became a member, then the scrivener, and finally the junior president of the Lyceum of Sárospatak Transylvania Self-developing Course and Lyceum Shorthand-Writer Group. In 1910 he completed the maturity exam successfully and travelled to Pest to study law. Being a jurist was only an excuse, he never finished law school, wanted to become a journalist. He was in his second year when he visited Jenő Rákosi, the editor in chief of the paper called “Budapesti Hírlap”. He started his career as an author in 1911 at “Budapesti Hírlap”. He served at the kaiserjäger regiment from 1912 in Bozen for a year. At the dawn of the war the Tirol legion was called on duty, and Komáromi joined the fight as well.

    Edit Zsadányi Impersonal Narration in the Prose of Margit Kaffka, Emma Ritoók and Jolán Földes Abstract: In this paper, I examine the ways in which women writers have contributed to literary modernity, and discuss approaches and rhetoric tropes that are able to convey the peculiarities of femininity. To this purpose, I have chosen to discuss a range of gendered prose poetry methods used by women writers of the first half of the 20th century that articulate the peculiarities of women’s identities. Inspired by feminist researchers Griselda Pollock and Rita Felski, I also examine instances and possible interpretations of gendered impersonal narration, such as the rhetoric of enumeration, overlapping cultural and fictional narratives, and the projection of feminine subjectivity onto objects. I also emphasize that we must take into account not only to the voice, language and personality of a character or narrator when examining constructs of their (feminine) self-image, but also other signs emerging elsewhere in the text. In this paper, I examine the ways in which women writers have contributed to literary modernity, and discuss approaches and rhetoric tropes that are able to convey the peculiarities of femininity.     Maya Lo Bello Loránd Eötvös University Doctoral School of Literary Modernities Section: Literary History “Everything Whole Has Come Apart” This lecture focuses on the strong sense of social crisis that led to the creation of the journal, Nyugat, in 1908. As the famous poet, Endre Ady, described it: “Everything whole has come apart,” a sentiment echoed in the works of Anna Lesznai, Margit Kaffka and Mihály Babits. While literary historians have examined how this crisis forced Nyugat’s poets and authors to break with tradition—resulting in the creation of modern literature in Hungary— less attention has been paid to how this crisis affected the journal’s critics. It is therefore my intention to examine Nyugat’s critical practice in order to ascertain how this phenomenon may have influenced impressionistic critics such as Miksa Fenyő, a Nyugat editor who often expressed his opinions concerning “traditional” critical theory at the time. Due to the constraints of time, my examination will be limited to articles published in Nyugat’s first year. Literary impressionism will be discussed within the context of how impressionistic critics reflected upon and differentiated themselves from what they held to be traditional or “mainstream” critical practice. While this difference frequently led to heated debate between the followers of both literary groups, I argue that Nyugat’s critics did not refute traditional critical practice to the extent literary history frequently suggests; my lecture would therefore like to demonstrate how tradition was adapted for modern literature’s alternate purposes. Any discussion of literary impressionism must also address the thorny question of what precisely this term means.

The traditions of Hungarian verse date back to the sixteenth century, to the first great Hungarian lyricist, Bálint Balassi. He voiced not only the exuberance of the Hungarian Renaissance, but his boisterousness and sentimentality, his choice of themes dealing with the warrior’s life, with love and religious fervour, made him a model for subsequent generations of Hungarian poets. From the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day, Hungarian literature has been a triumphal march of lyric poetry - each generation saw the emergence of great lyricists, who have, however, remained almost completely unknown to people abroad and to international literary opinion.
