Her father was a railroad attorney, and the family moved around while Amelia was a child. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Spadina Military Hospital in Toronto, Canada, during World War I, and then enrolled as a premedical student at Columbia University in New York. However, her parents then insisted that she move to California where they were living. In California she started taking flying lessons in 1921. With the help of her sister Muriel and her mother, Amy Otis Earhart, she bought her first airplane, a second-hand Kinner Airster, in 1922. After her parents’ divorce, Amelia moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where in 1928 she was selected by her future husband, the publisher George Palmer Putnam, to be the first female passenger on a transatlantic flight. -

Over the fence, through police lines, and onto the field they came, cheering and waving. Mounted policemen tried vainly to keep them back. Wiley Post, farmboy from Maysville, Oklahoma, sat in the cockpit of the Winnie Mae and waited. He hoped order would be restored, but he remembered a similar scene two years before and knew the crowd would be Oklahoma satisfied only with a glimpse of the pilot. Tiredly, he opened the hatch and pulled himself up and out. The waving crowd grew more frantic and the cheering loud- Spotlight er. Wiley could hear the cheers, but dimly. For once, he was almost glad of the temporary hearing loss he suf- fered from sitting so close to the engine of his airplane for so long. For seven days he had straddled the roaring engine, long hours at a time and with only short snatches of sleep in between. He was almost totally deaf now, hearing sounds as loud as this huge crowd but little else with the use of his earphones. He knew from ex- perience that it would probably be several days before his hearing re- turned, if it ever did. Two years earlier, Wiley Post and Harold Gatty had flown around the world in the same dependable aircraft. Wiley was pilot and Gatty was navigator. Except for a three-week flight by the multi-man crew of a military plane some years earlier, no one had ever done such a thing, and certainly not in less than nine days! It was a spectacular event, but it gained little money for the adventurers and their backer, oilman F. -

Lockheed Aircraft Since 1913
i FOREWORD The post-WWI boom in the U n i t e d S t a t e s p r o d u c e d the Roaring Twenties, jazz, prohibition, and art deco design. Babe Ruth was regularly hitting home runs, and the movie industry was experimenting with talkies. And then Lindbergh’s sensational solo flight across the Atlantic sparked an explosion of a v i a t i o n d e v e l o p m e n t s . Lockheed’s Vega led the way. The Vega’s design and power encouraged people in the slambang days of the early ‘30s to seek the thrills and romance that lay beyond the horizon. Her feats and record-breaking accomplishments kept the Lockheed name ablaze in headlines, and the Vega earned respect and admiration from people in all walks of life. With a long, smooth fuselage and curvaceous strut-free wing, the Lockheed Vega burst onto the scene where box-kite biplanes and brutish tri-motors performed. A glamour-girl, she stole the spotlight and the Lockheed Vega became a name symbolic of the utmost in speed to airman and schoolboy alike. The name Lockheed flashed back and forth across the continent and over the top of the world. The slogan “Look for Lockheed for Leadership” rang true, but was soon replaced when ’'It takes a Lockheed to beat a Lockheed” became an accepted fact. ii CHAPTER∏ 1 A LONG CLIMB TO SUCCESS Soon after the Wright Brothers flight in 1903 a remarkable single mother, Flora Loughead, moved her two young sons, Allan and Malcolm, from San Francisco to a small fruit farm north of Oakland, California. -

A week later, shocking news came that the two died when their plane crashed in Alaska. Second greatest American flyer next to Charles Lindbergh Who are Will Rogers and Wiley Post? Many considered Wiley Post to be the second greatest American flyer next to Charles A. Lindbergh. He was born in 1899, near Grand Plains, Texas, and grew up in Oklahoma. Post and an Australian, Harold Gatty, went around the world in 1931. Post wore a distinctive patch over his left eye after he lost it in an oilrig accident. Two years later, Post made a solo fight around the world, becoming the first man to circumnavigate the earth twice in an aircraft. Post completed his first solo world flight in seven days, 18 hours and 49.5 minutes. Post retired the Winnie Mae, the plane used in his around-the- world flight, and purchased a new hybrid aircraft assembled from parts of two previously damaged ships. Most popular actor in Hollywood Will Rogers was born on November 4, 1879, in Indiana Territory, an area of land that later would become known as Oklahoma. As film star making over 70 movies, Rogers became famous through his syndicated column, which reached millions of his readers. -

First Wright brothers’ airplane patent, based on their 1902 glider, is filed in America. Aug. 8, 1903. The Langley gasoline engine model airplane is successfully launched from a catapult on a houseboat. Dec. 8, 1903. Second and last trial of the Langley airplane, piloted by Charles M. Manly, is wrecked in launching from a houseboat on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Dec. 17, 1903. At Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville Wright flies for about 12 seconds over a distance of 120 feet, achieving the world’s first manned, powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. The Wright brothers made four flights that day. On the last, Wilbur Wright flew for 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. (Three days earlier, Wilbur Wright had attempted the first powered flight, managing to cover 105 feet in 3.5 seconds, but he could not sustain or control the flight and crashed.)
