There is also an opaque view of the executed leaders ofwhen the author says 'Although the executions that followed the Easter Rising were perfectly legal they damaged British standing and created a new crop of martyrs for the cause'. The author may call these executions 'legal' but dues not elude to the fact that these men were 'prisoners of war', and as such, should have been imprisoned, not shot en-masse. I should have abandoned the book after reading the very first line: 'It is likely that many people have never heard of the Anglo-Irish War. Did he mean Irish people, English people? I think he may be underestimating a vast percentage of Europe. Should you want to read an Englishman's view of another of England's colonies, go for it. Sep 10, Declan Waters rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction. Being of Irish and British descent, my knowledge of the independance of the Republic of Ireland is lamentable. With the anniversary of the Easter Rising, I decided to find more about the other country I have connections with, and it's connections with the one I live in. It is well presented, well researched and The Anglo-Irish War: The Troubles of 1913-1922 easy read as I would expect from an Osprey book. It also concentrates on some of the Being of Irish and British descent, my knowledge of the independance of the Republic of Ireland is lamentable. The book is equally damning of both nations, but includes important background to the actions of the people involved. My only criticsm would be the clear assumption that the reader knows about the Easter Risings as it gets only a short mention. However I know a little of this following documentaries on BBC4 so the mention provided the aide-memoir required. Well worth a read if you're interested in the history of these two neighbours, allies, and the violent disagreements that have occured. Poor show, especially from someone who has written two very good novels set during the period. I wasn't expecting too much as I have several volumes on the period it covers, but these two glaring errors are beyond comprehension. Fortunately I did not pay a The Anglo-Irish War: The Troubles of 1913-1922 of money for this or I would be demanding my money back. Dec 09, Bill Bailey rated it liked it. Could have used more photos and illustrations, and a "Further Reading" list. Jul 30, Patrick rated it it was ok Shelves: erinospreyowned. Osprey certainly is a British publisher. I can quibble with the authors point of view but I found this book worthwhile. One of the things that I have found si I was so lucky to get my non-fiction published by Osprey and my historical fiction The Anglo-Irish War: The Troubles of 1913-1922 Robert Hale but when I wrote 'Wyrdegrove' I couldn't find a publisher The Anglo-Irish War: The Troubles of 1913-1922 it and was told that historical fiction and time travel don't mix in stories so I decided to publish it myself on Kindle. Given the recent success of the 'Outlander series, it would appear that they were wrong and enough people have downloaded it from Amazon since it was first published The Anglo-Irish War: The Troubles of 1913-1922 to make me pursue getting it into paperback and getting on with writing the sequel. Next year will be the centenary of the General Election that gave Sinn Fein control of the bulk of the The Anglo-Irish War: The Troubles of 1913-1922 parliamentary seats in Westminster. It will be interesting to see what information is thrown up and how the event is covered. Tomorrow will be the th anniversary of the 16th Irish Division's assault on the village of Ginchy. The attack was the first major engagement for most of the Irishmen in the division who had volunteered to join up in response to Lord Kitchener and John Redmond's call to arms in The attack is also the climax of my WW1 novel 'The Lambs'.
