Message from the President

Ciao a Tutti

I would like to start by wising everyone a very Happy Valentine’s Day! Last month was not too exciting because we were all tired from that great NYE party but we did manage to put on “Latin Night” which was a huge success. Thank you to JoAnn, Frank, Joe, Mary, Karen, Dominick, Mike, Joe, Lou, Kenny and Donna our beer girl for making the night even more exciting. The Board and I also want to thank all the members who came the Friday night before that was also a banner night.

This month has some fantastic events starting with “Dance Fever” Saturday 2/03. A classic Disco night with some very special guests. Tickets are still available. “Carnevale di Venezia” Saturday 2/10 teaming together with our Heritage family making some very special dishes. This is almost sold out, so you better not snooze or you will lose lol. Pub Night this month, Saturday 2/24 features a new live band Sub-Jammer they are out of Jacksonville and play everything. Please visit their website and check them out so you can hear them live. I know all of you will love this band. Tickets are 10.00 at the door and include a free appetizer buffet. Hope all of you will attend.

On to Club business. First, I would like you all to know that our Chef Anthony has decided to resign because of personal reasons. On the good side, our new Chef is Michael better known as the sous chef who has learned a lot from Anthony and is ready for the challenge. He has been cooking for you for the past month and his food is delicious. Let us all welcome him to his new and well-deserved position. The floor and the hallway in the kitchen has been painted up to code. There are a few appliances that we are going to have to change out soon but that’s why we have the Building fund and we all want to thank you for your support. The Board would like to thank Joe Abitante and Annmarie for the 1700.00 check and to the members who donated another 100.00 from the cruise they all took in October. Great gift to the Club.

On a sad note, we lost one of our dearest family member Terry Kent. Please pray for Don and his family. We all need many prayers when this happens. Also please keep in your prayers all of our members that are ill and need a fast recovery. The Board and I just want to say how thankful we are for all of you who support the club because “WE ARE THE BEST CLUB ON THE STRIP & THIS IS OUR CLUB AND OUR FAMILY” Grazie a Tutti Chuck Buglione, President

Several distinct styles of masks are worn in the Carnevale di Venezia, some with identifying names.

The bauta is a mask that today is heavily gilded, though originally simple stark white, which is designed to comfortably cover the entire face. This traditional grotesque piece of art was characterized by the inclusion of an over-prominent nose, a thick supraorbital ridge, a projecting chin line, and no mouth. The mask’s beak-like chin is designed to enable the wearer to talk, eat, and drink without having to remove it. The bauta was often accompanied by a red or black cape and a tricorn.

The Colombina is a half-mask, only covering the wearer’s eyes, nose, and upper cheeks. It is often highly decorated with gold, silver, crystals, and feathers. It is held up to the face by a baton or is tied with a ribbon as with most other Venetian masks. The

Columbina mask is named after a stock character in the Commedia dell’arte: Colombina was a maidservant and soubrette who was an adored part of Italian theatre for generations.

The Medico della peste, with its long beak, is one of the most bizarre and recognizable masks, though it did not start out as a th carnival mask but as a method of preventing spread of disease. The striking design originates from 17 century French physician Charles de Lorme who adopted the mask while treating plague victims. The mask is often white, consisting of a hollow beak and round eyeholes covered with crystal discs. Those who wear the plague doctor mask often also wear the associated clothing, a black hat and cloak, white gloves and a staff.

The moretta (dark one) or servetta muta (mute servant woman) was a small strapless velvet oval mask with wide eyeholes and no lips or mouth by patrician women. The mask was only just large enough to conceal a woman’s identity and was held in place by the wearer biting on a button or bit (the women wearing this mask were unable to speak, hence muta) and was often finished off with a veil.

The volto (Italian for face) or larva (meaning ghost in Latin) is the iconic modern Venetian mask; it is often made of white porcelain or thick plastic, though frequently gilded and decorated, and is commonly worn with a tricorn and cloak. It is also quite heavier than a typical mask and has a much tighter fit. The volto is typically worn with a headdress, scarf, veil, another mask or a combination of all four and is secured in the back with a ribbon. The volto covers the entire face including the whole chin. It extends farther back to just before the ears and upwards to the top of the forehead and depicts the nose and lips in simple facial expressions.

Another classic character from the stage, Pantalone, possibly stemming from the Italian” pianta il leone” referencing the conquests of Venice and the origin of this character, is usually represented as a sad old man with an oversized nose like the beak of a crow with high brows and slanted eyes. Pantalone is also a half mask. meaning harlequin in Italian, is a zanni character of the commedia. His originally wooden and later leather half mask painted black depicts him as having a short, blunt, ape like nose, a set of wide, round, arching eyebrows, a rounded beard and always a bump on his forehead meant to signify a devil’s horn. n The Zanni class of characters is another classic of the stage. Theirs is a half mask in leather, with a low forehead, bulging eyebrows and a long nose with a reverse curve towards the end. It is said the longer the nose, the more stupid the character.

Join us for Carnevale di Venezia on February 10th and be sure to wear your mask!
