Foreword This document reports on the firstt en years (2000-2009) of sampling and results for the Maryland Stream Waders (MSW) statewide volunteer stream monitoring program managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Monitoring and Non-tidal Assessment Division (MANTA). Stream Waders data are intended to supplementt hose collected for the Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) by DNR and University of Maryland biologists. This report provides an overview oft he Program and summarizes results from the firstt en years of sampling. OCEAN CITY HARBOR & INLET & SINEPUXENT BAY, MD FACT SHEET as of February 2019 AUTHORIZATION: The project was approved by the River and Harbor Act of August 1935 in accordance with Rivers and Harbors Committee Document No. 38, 72nd Congress and modified in Document No. 60. It was also modified in 1954. TYPE OF PROJECT: Navigation PROJECT PHASE: Operation and Maintenance CONGRESSIONAL INTEREST: Senators Van Hollen and Cardin (MD), Representatives Harris (MD-1) NON-FEDERAL SPONSOR: Worcester County, Maryland BACKGROUND: The location of the Ocean City inlet is on the far eastern boundary of Maryland along the Atlantic Coast. The project provides for an inlet channel 10 feet deep from the Atlantic Ocean through West Ocean City harbor. The inlet channel width varies from 100 to 200 feet. The inlet channel is protected by two stone jetties at the entrance from the Atlantic Ocean. The project also includes a channel 6 feet deep and with widths that vary from 100 to 150 feet in Sinepuxent Bay from the inlet to Chincoteague Bay. The project also includes a channel 6 feet deep with widths that vary from 75 to 125 feet from the inlet into the Isle of Wight Bay. STATUS: The Ocean City inlet has a history of shoaling rapidly, especially near the entrance to the West Ocean City harbor. Limited maintenance dredging of the Ocean City inlet via one of the Corps’ special purpose dredges will be accomplished with fiscal year (FY) 2019 funds. Box 180 Tilghman, MD 21671 2003 ii ABSTRACT This report summarizes the results of an archaeological survey conducted along the Atlantic shorelines of both Accomack County and Northampton County, Virginia. Accomack and Northampton Counties represent the southernmost extension of the Delmarva Peninsula. The study area encompasses all of the lands adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean and shorelines associated with the back barrier island bays. A shoreline survey was conducted along the Atlantic Ocean to gauge the erosion threat to the archaeological resources situated along the shoreline. Archaeological sites along shorelines are subjected to numerous natural processes which hinder site visibility and limit archaeological interpretations. Summaries of these natural processes are presented in this report. The primary goal of the project was to locate, identify, and record any archaeological sites or remains along the Atlantic seashore that are threatened by shoreline erosion. The project also served as a test of a prehistoric site predictive/settlement model that has been utilized during other archaeological surveys along the Chesapeake Bay shorelines and within the interior sections of the Delmarva Peninsula. The prehistoric site predictive/settlement model is presented in detail using archaeological examples from Maryland and Virginia’s Eastern Shore. -

Live Oysters
LIVE OYSTERS West Coast There are an infinite number of names and harvest locations for these oysters. They are all the same species with only two exceptions. The species that are cultured on the West Coast are: Crassostrea gigas - Originated from Japan Crassostrea sikameo - Kumamoto, really a sub species of gigas Ostrea lurida - Olympia The gigas is a Pacific oyster indigenous to Japan that is widely grown in California and the Pacific Northwest. Different names are used to describe where the oysters were harvested. Generally it is a bay, beach, island or canal. The Kumamoto is a sub species of the gigas and is raised from British Columbia to Mexico. Most oyster connoisseurs recognize the Washington and Oregon Kumamoto as the true Kumamoto. The Kumamotos from this area tend to be the smaller, sweeter variety that is familiar to most people. The California Kumamoto is also nice but is a bit larger in size. Technically the California Kumamoto is a hybrid between a gigas and a Kumamoto. The mortality rate of the seed/spat of a Kumamoto is very high, thus yields in the oyster beds are never as high as the grower would like. Therefore, they tend to be less available and more expensive. This may be one of the reasons that the hybrid Kumamoto was developed, to have a stronger oyster that survived better and could be produced in larger quantities. All but one west coast oyster falls into the first category of gigas. The exception is the Olympia. The Olympia is the only indigenous oyster to the west coast.
