(continued from page 3) AGBU PRESIDENT'S AWARD AGBU President Berge Setrakian also granted the AGBU President's Award to three current and former AGBU chairs who have dem- onstrated distinct leadership and have dedicated many years to the organization: Sofia Chapter Chair Sonia Avakian-Bedrossian, Plov- div Chapter Chair Roupen Chavoushian and former Montevideo Chapter Chair Gustavo Zulamian. Instrumental in reviving AGBU's activities in Sofia in the post-Communism years, Mrs. Sonia Avakian-Bedrossian has been the Chap- ter Chair for over a decade. A true leader with a creative mind and a vision to attract the new generation, she energized the Chapter's base through various activities and programs, in particular the Mothers' Committee and the Nur Dance Ensemble. She was responsible for initiating Camp Unger, a Chapter program designed to bond AGBU Sofia's youngest members, and most recently, in collaboration with the AGBU Plovdiv Chapter, for initiating Camp Hayler, which unites youth from across Bulgaria. In 2007, she established the AGBU Sofia Chamber Orchestra, which consistently draws scores of Armenian and non-Armenian music lovers alike to several con- certs each year, and organized in 2004 the XVII AGBU World Games, which brought together over 250 young Armenian athletes from five continents to the Bulgarian seaside town of Albena for a week of sports competitions and social events. Mr. Roupen Chavoushian was one of the key individuals to re-establish the Plovdiv Chapter after the fall of Communism. He has played a great role in perpetuating the Armenian heritage in the city, which is home to the country's largest Armenian population. As the current and longtime Chair of the AGBU Plovdiv Chapter, he administers a number of Associated Chapters in Burgas, Dobrich, Haskovo, Russe, Silistra, Sliven and Yambol, and initiated AGBU Saturday Schools in each of these towns, ensuring the organization's strong presence across the country. He also established the Plovdiv Chapter's Saturday School Theater Group, which won first place in Yerevan's 2011 Pomegranate Seed Theater Festival. Over 800 readers receive the "AGBU Voice", a bimonthly publication founded by Chavoushian. His contributions to the town were recently acknowledged with a medal awarded by the Mayor of Plovdiv. Dr. Gustavo Zulamian is considered one of AGBU's most talented young leaders in South America. He has served as the General Sec- retary of the AGBU Montevideo board and as both the Chair of the Montevideo Chapter and the AGBU Nubarian-Manoogian School, of which he is an alumnus - all while maintaining a dentistry practice. He has been involved with the organization since childhood; as a young athlete, he brought his active involvement to the Chapter's Liga de Jóvenes (Youth League) and South American Regional Games. More recently, he has dedicated himself to the arts and media, serving as editor of the monthly magazine "Hai En- danik," (Armenian Family), which covers Armenian issues. He continues to assume special assignments on behalf of the organization. Page 6 AGBU ARMENIA NEWSLETTER Issue 22, September-October, 2012

DELEGATES AND REPRESENTATIVES ATTEND CONSECRATION OF AGBU’S HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED NEW YEREVAN CENTER

On the occasion of AGBU’s 87th General Assembly on October 17, His Holiness Karekin II, Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan and AGBU delegates got an exciting preview of the new AGBU center under construction, which will soon stand tall in Yerevan. Guests were welcomed to the downtown location by Presi- dent Setrakian, who remarked, “This building will further cement AGBU’s roots in the soil of our homeland and strengthen Arme- nia-diaspora ties.” AGBU Central Board Member Vasken Yacoubian provided addi- tional details on the project, as well as background on the new building’s historical relevance. As he described, the facility will represent one of Armenia’s premiere office sites His Holiness Karekin II (in the middle) and Yerevan Mayor Taron Mar- garyan (second from left) at the AGBU new Center construction site when it is unveiled in early 2014. The environmentally friendly complex will include conference and exhibition halls, a cafeteria and two underground levels of parking, all of which will rise five stories and span 6,800 square meters. Cutting edge technologies, such as thermally insulated facades will make the building energy efficient. The building will benefit from all that today’s new, green technologies have to offer, while incorporating many significant elements from the past. The site was first home to the Yerevan Municipality’s Duma (Council) building, which was built in 1906 on the Dajarayin Square (now Shahumian Square). It, along with neighboring buildings, was torn down in 2000, but many of the stones were salvaged and preserved, and will now be used to reproduce the original façade. AGBU representatives had the opportunity to see what the building and the neighborhood looked like in the last century, thanks to poster-sized images that were obtained from the National State Archives and displayed throughout the visit. Those photos were placed alongside architectural renderings of the new building and the sur- rounding area, as well as a running slideshow of the construction phases. Together, these graphics illustrated the ways AGBU is taking the city, and the country, into the future, a major theme of this year’s General Assembly. As Mr. Yacoubian stated, “This building not only is a symbol and expression of our unending dedication towards our homeland, but also of our forward-looking new initiatives and wide-spread activities, which, in effect, express AGBU’s 87th General Assembly slogan: Engaging the Future.”

The highly-anticipated new AGBU Center begins to take shape…. ….and will soon stand tall in the center of Yerevan During the gathering, Mr. Yacoubian thanked the key individuals who have made the project a reality. He noted that a great debt of gratitude is owed to AGBU Council of Trustee Member Nazar Nazarian and his wife Artemis for their generous contributions in making the building possible. Mr. Yacoubian also acknowledged the and the Yerevan Municipality, which facilitated AGBU’s realization of the project. In addition, he gave special thanks to the building’s dedicated concept designer, ar- chitectural advisor and AGBU Central Board Member Aris Atamian, who continues to generously offer his time and contributions through the planning and construction phases. Finally, recognition was given to the Architectural Studio and Hori- zon-95 Construction Company, which are bringing the building to life. Following Mr. Yacoubian’s remarks, His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, offered a prayer for the success of the project. Mayor Margaryan delivered words of praise for AGBU’s many projects, and especially for this latest initiative, which will allow for the expansion of AGBU’s cultural, educational, humanitarian and youth programs. The building, he noted, will provide much-needed resources to the community – marking AGBU’s continuous efforts to helping Armenia prosper.

Today, AVC is pleased to announce 3 new programs: AVC Kids program for younger children; AVC Mobile application to expand its reach through smartphones and tablets; and an AVC Multimedia Podcast Series for non-students interested in Armenian history and cul- ture,” said Dr. Zorian. Dr. Yervant Zorian (left) introduces AVC’s newest programs at a global In his address, the Minister of Education and Science Armen forum, with RA Minister of Education Armen Ashotyan in attendance Ashotyan stated, “The application of high technology in edu- cation in Armenia was far from being perfect. We used information technology in public education. However, even then, Armenian universities were not equipped to put IT possibilities to their fullest use. In this respect, the Armenian Virtual College is the best higher education institution in Armenia. I would like to note that the best solutions and best engineering minds have been used here. Certainly, there is also the issue of the preservation of the Armenian identity. It is hard to overestimate the importance of the online repository created by this college. This tool is much needed by our compatriots in foreign countries. And I am very grateful that the Ministry of Education and Science now has a serious partner that helps us meet the education needs of the Diaspora. This project is so good and revolutionary that we are willing to make it even more attractive by working with AGBU toward the state licensing of AVC. Upon the successful conclusion of the licensing process, AVC will become the first virtual institution to be recognized as a higher education institute in Armenia.” One of the new programs announced was the creation of AVC Kids, a program that includes courses of and chess for children. Smbat Lputyan, the founding President of the Chess Academy of Armenia, stressed the importance of this initiative. Chess teachers are scarce in Armenia and the multimedia online program will play an essential role in this respect. Dr. Zorian presented the recent advances in mobile device tech- nology and applications. He stated that the use of mobile de- vices will increasingly become more popular than personal computers. In an effort to keep up with present-day develop- ments in technology and meet the demands of modern students, AVC will make its courses also available on mobile devices. Another recent addition by the College is the Multimedia Pod- cast Series designed for non-students. The podcasts will allow those interested to learn key topics in Armenian culture and history without having to enroll as a student. Dr. Zorian pre- sented an application designed by AVC and a set of sample podcasts that run on Apple devices. The event also included a virtual graduation ceremony held online. The first graduates of the College were awarded diplo- mas. The new AVC graduates had chance to join in with their words of appreciation and congratulation both online and live. AVC marks its 3rd anniversary through an online forum and graduation Armen Kadiyan of Berlin, Germany, Ludmila Sargisyan of Selestat, France, and Gal Tamir of Santiago, Chile, shared their impressions and the impact AVC has had on their lives. Armen and Ludmila learned Armenian at the college and addressed the audience in Armenian. Ludmila, a Russian by origin and married to an Armenian, has learned the language and is now able to communicate with her husband and children in Armenian. The graduates were virtually greeted by Archbishop V. Mirzakhanyan, Primate of Georgian Diocese. He emphasized the key role AVC plays in bridging the Armenian communities and in preserving the Armenian identity among Georgian-Armenians. Eliz Partamian of Uruguay, a graduate of AVC, communicated online and stated, “During the past three years AVC carried out un- precedented work by bringing the wonderful Armenian language and glorious culture into everyone’s homes.” In his impromptu remarks, Ruben Kechichian, AGBU Central Board member, congratulated the College on its achievements and spoke of the pivotal role AVC has played in the curriculum of the AGBU Marie Manoogian School in Buenos Aires.

Towards the end of the AGBU 87th General Assembly held in Armenia from October 14-21, following the Union's call to raise funds in support of the Syrian-Armenian community, AGBU delegates and guests raised 250,000 USD for this purpose during a farewell dinner organized on October 20. AGBU Central Board's decision, dated August 3, 2012, had set aside a one million US dollars emergency fund for the needs of the Syrian-Armenians. Later, AGBU issued a call to all Diasporan Armenians to launch a major fundraising campaign to support the Syrian-Armenian community. The Union's call saw an overwhelming response by our compatriots from all over the world. AGBU AUGMENTS MAJOR RELIEF ACTIVITIES TO HELP SYRIAN-ARMENIANS AGBU Central Board member Vasken Yacoubian’s press conference at AGBU Yerevan office

A press conference was held at the Armenian General Benevolent Union’s office in Yerevan on September 27, 2012, announcing the details of AGBU’s relief efforts for Syrian Armenians. Mr. Vasken Yacoubian, member of AGBU’s Central Board of Direc- tors, and Hovig Eordekian, Interim Director of AGBU Arme- nian Representation, led the press conference during which Mr. Yacoubian noted several actions already taken by AGBU towards these relief efforts. On August 3, the AGBU Central Board established a one million US dollar emergency fund for humanitarian assistance to Armenian communities in Syria. On September 7, AGBU issued an urgent appeal to Armeni- ans in the Diaspora to raise funds for this cause. In response, $150,000 dollars had been raised by the time of this press conference. On the ground in Syria, through its district com- mittee and local chapters in various cities, AGBU began work on providing vital necessities to more than 2,500 families in Aleppo, Damascus and other cities in Syria. “Taking into account a family of five members, we have provided each family with enough nutritional and pharmaceutical needs for a month. But the efforts do not stop here. The one million Vasken Yacoubian and Hovig Eordekian dollar fund that is now available might be enough, if the speak about AGBU’s efforts to help Syrian-Armenians fighting stops within a month; or it could be useless and we would be forced to raise it to 5 million or even 10 million. Our organi- zation is ready to take these measures, and we have foreseen that,” stated Vasken Yacoubian. In addition to the aid that was dis- tributed, AGBU has begun to prepare its centers and schools for a possible deterioration of the current situation by securing drink- ing water and fuel reservoirs, and refrigerators for medicine and food storage. In Armenia, the AGBU is prepared to pay school tuition and monthly rent to families, who due to being unemployed, cannot afford to pay them.

That circumstance, plus recognition of the increasing political importance of the region, necessi- tated a fourth revised and updated edition, renamed A Concise History of the Armenian People, published in 2001, in which the two volumes were combined into one. The book has also been translated into Spanish, Turkish and Arabic. The Japanese version of the book will be ready in the near future.
