The Prebend House Advanced Studies Seminar Series BLURB Autumn 2015

The Prebend House Advanced Studies Seminar Series: Autumn Term 2015.

In 2013 the School of Humanities at the University of inaugurated a new Advanced Studies seminar series, underpinning its culture of research and teaching, and reflecting the University’s commitment to independence. The series seeks to stimulate leading- edge and innovative thinking and serves as a beacon of intellectual inquiry to the growing number of research students in the School. The Advanced Studies seminar series is held in our newly refurbished Prebend House building, throughout the Buckingham academic year, on selected Thursdays.

Our guests are leading public intellectuals, leading academics and figures of influence and significance in the public world. They are asked to present academic staff and their postgraduate students with a short paper or speech (ideally lasting about thirty minutes and usually starting at 1615 with a 1730 finish).

Speakers in the three past years have included: Charles Powell (Lord Powell of Bayswater), foreign policy advisor to ; the Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP, former Home Office Minister; Dr Jamie Shea, Deputy Assistant General of NATO; the Rt Hon Lord Baker of Dorking, PC, former Home Secretary, Minister for Education and Chairman of the Conservative Party; the Rt Hon Dominic Grieve MP, former HM Attorney General; Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali; Lord (Alex) Carlile QC; Sir Rodric Braithwaite, former HM Ambassador to the Soviet Union; Thomas Kielinger OBE, Chief London Correspondent of Die Welt; Chris Westcott, Head of the BBC’s Monitoring Service; Professor Philip Murphy, Director, Institute of Commonwealth Studies, , ; Professor Jan-Dietrich Hendrik, Chair of Intelligence Law, Federal German University of Applied Administrative Sciences; Professor Alan Woodward, the , Sir Nicholas Barrington former, High Commissioner to Pakistan, Francis Morgan Head of Security at Heathrow Airport and Professor Gary Sheffield, Wolverhampton University. Speakers are invited on the specific understanding that because the University of Buckingham has a strong commitment to academic independence, we will always welcome controversial or provocative presentations (although an invitation to speak would not imply an endorsement of the positions that were put to us). Papers or speeches lead to a ‘round table’ style discussion of the topic, chaired by Professor Anthony Glees.
