This body of literature has served the Methodist movement as the normative teaching standard since the eighteenth century. The Wesley Works Editorial Project (WWEP) was established in 1960 for the purpose of publishing scholarly editions of the writings of Rev. John Wesley, A.M. (1703- 1791). The project was sponsored by four Methodist-related educational institutions in the United States: Drew University, Duke University, Emory University, and Southern Methodist University. “The aim throughout [was] to enable Wesley to be read with maximum ease and understanding and with minimal intrusion by the editors.” (The Bicentennial Edition). Robert E. Cushman served as project administrator from 1960 to 1970. Frank Baker served as Editor-in-Chief beginning in 1969. In 1986 Richard P. Heitzenrater was named General Editor. In 2003 Randy L. Maddox was appointed to serve as Associate General Editor.
