ISBN: 0-9716962-1-7 PREFACE This HANDBOOK OF INTERACTIVE MANAGEMENT is intended to put in one place and in modular form much of the material that practitioners need to know about Interactive Management (IM). It is intended to help bridge an acknowledged gap between the material in the senior author's 1990 book A SCIENCE OF GENERIC DESIGN: MANAGING COMPLEXITY THROUGH SYSTEMS DESIGN and the needs of the practitioner or potential practitioner to translate the science into action in organizations. The practitioner may find parts of this HANDBOOK useful in marketing IM to clients or for training others. The reader who is not familiar with the history of IM will need to know that there is a large array of backup literature that is available. Of special importance are two books. The first book titled SOCIETAL SYSTEMS: PLANNING, POLICY, AND COMPLEXITY, was published by Warfield in 1976. It had a very broad systems engineering orientation, and it introduced the process called Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM), presenting the theory, methods, and some initial applications. The 1976 book was subsequently reprinted and part of it will be required reading for anyone wishing to study thoroughly the nature and processes of IM. The second book, mentioned in the preceding paragraph, also requires recourse to the 1976 book for certain detailed material relating to the ISM process. This second book provides the scientific basis for IM. These two books merely cap the literature. An extensive set of publications providing backup detail and applications reporting appears in The IASIS File: A Bibliography of Books and Papers Relevant to Complexity. This book is located in the Library of Congress and various university libraries. The documents are accessible in the Library of the Defense Systems Management College in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The text begins by responding to the question "What is Interactive Management?". It continues by giving the primary set of outcomes from its use, the several levels of success from which users can choose, the phases through which IM passes, and the roles that are important in applying IM. Then typical types of products that are produced by using IM are described, and the processes that are used to produce these products are discussed. The kind of facility that is very helpful in carrying out IM is described. Next several versions of IM Software are discussed, the software being essential to carrying out the IM processes. The three phases of IM activity are then discussed in detail. Evaluation criteria are then given which can be applied to assess the quality of the work being done in applications, and to assess the performance of various roles with the aim of helping the actors to improve their capabilities to work with IM. In view of the applications of IM to system design and implementation, it is appropriate to compare IM with other approaches to system design and implementation. Among the approaches currently being used routinely or experimentally are methods usually associated with Japan. These include Quality Function Deployment and the so-called "7-QC-Tools and 7-M-Tools". A thorough comparison of IM with these methods is presented, along with recommendations for a i superior process. Appendix 1 gives an executive overview of IM for orientation of a busy executive who will not have time to get into many important details. Appendix 2 gives a detailed user guide for using one of the several versions of the IM software, namely the GMU ISM Software, operating on IBM compatible PC equipment. Appendix 3 presents a discussion of group facilitation, with emphasis on activity involving complex issues. Appendix 4 gives a case study showing how to interpret certain products of IM activity. Appendix 5 lists qualified practitioners who have varying degrees of experience in applying IM, and who are capable of planning and conducting IM work. Appendix 6 gives details of how to develop an IM Workshop Plan. Most of the text for this work was written by the senior author. The junior author made major changes in the organization of the material, and added key comments in various places, based on her own significant experience in setting up an IM center and applying IM at ITESM (her home institution in Monterrey, Mexico). She has introduced IM on many ITESM branch campuses, where it is being applied in strategic planning. This book benefited from research support provided by the Defense Systems Management College, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and from the Ford Research Laboratory of the Ford Motor Company. The authors appreciate the support, and acknowledge the cooperation of Professor Henry Alberts at the Defense Systems Management College and of Dr. Scott Staley, P. The concept of capability has been deemed relevant over the years, which can be attested by its adoption in varied domains. It is an abstract concept, but simple to understand by business stakeholders and yet capable of making the bridge to technical aspects. Capabilities seem to bear similarities with services, namely their low coupling and high cohesion. However, the concepts are different since the concept of service seems to rest between that of capability and those directly related to the implementation. However, it is not recognition of the external similaritySAMPLE between the functions of animalsCHAPTERS and machines that Norbert Wiener is credited with. That had been done well before and can be traced back to La Mettrie and Descartes. Nor is it his contribution that he introduced the notion of feedback; that has been known since the times of the creation of the first irrigation systems in ancient Babylon. His distinctive contribution lies in demonstrating that both animals and machines can be combined into a new, wider class of objects which is characterized by the presence of control systems; furthermore, living organisms, including humans and machines, can be talked about in the same language that is suitable for a description of any teleological (goal-directed) systems.

    The Systems Engineering Tool Box Dr Stuart Burge “Give us the tools and we will finish the job” Winston Churchill Needs Means Analysis (NMA) What is it and what does it do? Needs Means Analysis (NMA) is a systems thinking tool aimed at exploring alternative system solutions at different levels in order to help define the boundary of the system of interest. It is based around identifying the “need” that a system satisfies and using this to investigate alternative solutions at levels higher, the same and lower than the system of interest. Why do it? At any point in time there is usually a “current” or “preferred” solution to a particular problem. In consequence organizations will develop their operations and infrastructure to support and optimise that solution. This preferred solution is known as the Meta-Solution. For example Toyota, Ford, General Motors, Volkswagen et al all have the same meta-solution when it comes to automobile – in simple terms two-boxes with wheel at each corner. All of the automotive companies have slowly evolved in to an industry aimed at optimising this meta-solution. Systems Thinking encourages us to “step back” from the solution to consider the underlying problem or purpose. In the case of an automobile, the purpose is to “transport passengers and their baggage from one point to another” This is also the purpose of a civil aircraft, passenger train and bicycle! In other words for a given purpose there are alternative meta-solutions. The idea of a pre-eminent meta-solution has also been discussed by Pugh (1991) who introduced the idea of dynamic and static design concepts.

  • 1 Umpleby Stuart Reconsidering Cybernetics
    UMPLEBY STUART RECONSIDERING CYBERNETICS The field of cybernetics attracted great attention in the 1950s and 1960s with its prediction of a Second Industrial Revolution due to computer technology. In recent years few people in the US have heard of cybernetics (Umpleby, 2015a, see Figures 1 and 2 at the end of Paper). But a wave of recent books suggests that interest in cybernetics is returning (Umpleby and Hughes, 2016, see Figure at the end of Paper). This white paper reviews some basic ideas in cybernetics. I recommend these and other ideas as a resource for better understanding and modeling of social systems, including threat and response dynamics. Some may claim that whatever was useful has already been incorporated in current work generally falling under the complexity label, but that is not the case. Work in cybernetics has continued with notable contributions in recent years. Systems science, complex systems, and cybernetics are three largely independent fields with their own associations, journals and conferences (Umpleby, 2017). Four types of descriptions used in social science After working in social science and systems science for many years I realized that different academic disciplines use different basic elements. Economists use measurable variables such as price, savings, GDP, imports and exports. Psychologists focus on ideas, concepts and attitudes. Sociologists and political scientists focus on groups, organizations, and coalitions. Historians and legal scholars emphasize events and procedures. People trained in different disciplines construct different narratives using these basic elements. One way to reveal more of the variety in a social system is to create at least four descriptions – one each using variables, ideas, groups, and events (See the figures and tables in Medvedeva & Umpleby, 2015).

I consider two different but sometimes intertwined lines of thought, genres and/or disciplines: (1) science-fiction, and (2) communication and/or media studies. In the first case, I consider Korzybski’s direct influence on William Burroughs and Alfred van Vogt and thus his indirect influence on Philip K. Dick (PKD) and the 1980s genre of cyberpunk literature. In the second case, I show how Korzybski’s direct influence on Gregory Bateson, among other cyberneticians of the first hour (McCullogh and Northrop), and Neil Postman, contributed in shaping one of the leading modes of thought in this domain, i.e. “media ecology.” Altogether, I argue that Korzybski’s legacy in contemporary culture greatly exceeds the “map is not the territory” slogan: instead, through such notions as “the unbearable aporias of being”, the power of the conjunction and the relation between language and power (“control”), he helped shape today’s modes of thought. 3 Introduction This paper is about maps and territories, but about special kinds of maps and territories; digital (and not virtual) maps and territories. So I start with a serious question: say at the sattelite resolution of Google maps, for instance, doesn’t the map look like the territory? And if the territory itself is digital (as in cyberspace), isn’t the map the territory? In order to give some elements of answer to these questions I examine here the direct and indirect influences Alfred Korzybski had on contemporary cyberculture.
