PRESIDENT'S MUSINGS OCTOBER 2015 Many of us attended the Navy Ball at the Atrium Flemington Racecourse on October 17th, and the consensus is that it was a splendid occasion. Our congratulations go to the organising committee for a job well done. Personally I had a great time! Traditionally we have 'Show and Tell' as part of our AGM and we urge you to check out that trunk in the attic and share your treasures with your friends, who are sure to believe everything you tell them about it! Show and tell is a lot of fun and we are sure to share a few laughs together, as always! Rex's Odyssey – Part 1: My son, David, is working in Manila and so my trip, over two months, really started and ended in the Philippines. It was really great to catch up with the Williams family and be with them for a couple of weeks sharing their new environment. I'd like to also share with you my time at the American Cemetery in Manila and my day trip to Corregidor Island. The American Cemetery and Memorial is set on 152 acres, and burials number 17,201 most of who lost their lives in operations in the New Guinea and Philippines area. The headstones are aligned in 11 plots forming a generally circular pattern, set amongst lush lawns and beautiful trees white and shrubs. It is indeed a beautiful resting place which is maintained to perfection. The chapel building is situated near the centre of the complex and in front of it on a wide terrace are two large hemicycles containing 25 mosaic maps recalling the achievements of America and her allies in the Pacific, Chinese Indian and Burmese theatres during WWII. -

Airshows In California If you like to watch cool airplanes fly around, there is hardly a better state to live in than beautiful California. The great weather has made our state home to many air bases and to many passionate private owners of interesting aircraft. All the crop-dusting that goes on in the Central Valley produces many a fine aerobat. Nasa's Ames Research Center, right in Silicon Valley, has been at the leading edge of fluid dynamics studies for a while (they have the largest wind tunnel in the world). Also, much of the USAF's recon units are not too far from there, in the Sacramento area. Heading south, Lemoore is one of the US Navy's biggest fighter-jet bases. Further south; the LA area headquarters Northrop Grumman and AeronVironment and is home to some Boeing and Lockheed facilities, not to mention Vandenberg's rocket launchpads. And finally, the importance of Southern California's Antelope Valley to the development and testing of modern aviation technologies cannot be overstated, from Edwards Air Force Base and the Nasa Dryden Flight Research Center (where the sound barrier was first broken and where proof-of-concept X-planes still fly) to all the prototyping/testing facilities at Palmdale and the home of Scaled Composites in Mojave. So if you like aviation, there are few places you'd rather be at than California. And where there are a lot of people making aviation happen... there are airshows. If you live in California and think you might enjoy going to an airshow, here are some you can pick from. -

Journalists wrote about it at the time, many people who were involved wrote about it in the immediate years that followed, and historians have tried to put it all together. The issues of foreign policy at the strategic level and the military operations that took place in this period have been especially well covered. However, the question of military strategic alternatives in this important era of British foreign policy has been less studied. -

The :TWA: Hotel’s Lockheed Constellation THE “CONNIE” FLIES THROUGH NYC John F. Kennedy International Airport New York City NYC’s Aviation Triumph The magic of the Jet Age returns to John F. Kennedy International Airport with a 19581956 Lockheed ✈ Constellation L-1649A Starliner (the “Connie”) positioned on the TWA Hotel’s tarmac outside the landmark 1962 TWA Flight Center. Known as the secret weapons of TWA’s former owner, Howard Hughes, the airline’s fleet of cutting-edge Constellation planes broke the era’s transcontinental speed record. The aircraft will make history again as the first Connie transformed into a cocktail lounge. 2 Project Overview The TWA Hotel (currently under development by MCR and MORSE Development) will feature a one-of-a-kind cocktail lounge inside the fuselage of a fully restored Lockheed Constellation L-1649A Starliner (the “Connie”). ✈ The exterior of the plane is fully restored, complete with authentic 1962 TWA livery, engines and propellers. ✈ The interior fuselage of the plane will be refurbished and designed as a high-end lounge with 30 to 40 seats. ✈ The Connie will sit on the TWA Hotel’s “tarmac” located just outside the lobby. 3 Project Overview ✈ MCR and MORSE Development purchased the ✈ In October 2018, the Connie will journey from Maine aircraft from Lufthansa in early 2018. through the heart of Manhattan and finally to the TWA • The plane is one of four remaining Lockheed Constellation Hotel at JFK Airport. Through an analysis of the adaptation process of Marvel Entertainment’s superhero franchise from comics to film, I argue that a hegemonic American model of militarization has been used by Hollywood as a discursive formation with which to transform niche properties into mass market products. I consider the locations of narrative ambiguities in two key comics texts, The Ultimates (2002-2007) and The New Avengers (2005-2012), as well as in the film The Avengers (2012), and demonstrate the significant reorientation of the film franchise towards the American military’s “War on Terror”. While Marvel had attempted to produce film adaptations for decades, only under the new “militainment” discursive formation was it finally successful. -

NEWS RELEASE Museum’s Harrier Jump Jet presented with prestigious Engineering Heritage Award 16 October 2012 The Hawker Siddeley Harrier, also known as the Harrier Jump Jet, on display at the RAF Museum, Hendon was presented with a prestigious Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Engineering Heritage Award on Thursday 18 October. The award recognises its position as the first vertical take-off aircraft to go into volume production. Professor Isobel Pollock, President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers who will be presenting the award to Air Vice-Marshall Peter Dye, the Museum’s Director General, on Thursday said: “The Harrier Jump Jet is a fantastic example of British engineering and it is a great testament to the preservation work of the RAF Museum in Hendon that it is in such excellent condition. “The Harrier Jump Jet, developed in the 1960s, and is a precursor to subsequent vertical take-off aircraft like the Harrier II and F-35 Lightning II. “Thursday’s award recognises the fact that the Hawker Siddeley Harrier was the first generation of vertical take-off aircraft to go into volume production. “Engineering Heritage Awards recognise great engineering achievements, with previous winners including Tower Bridge, the E-Type Jaguar and the Falkirk Wheel.” Museum Director General Peter Dye said “It’s an honour to receive this award and we take pride in displaying it. As the first operational vertical short take-off and landing jet fighter, the Harrier will always be regarding as an iconic aircraft in the history of British aviation. It is a fine example of British engineering, built around the remarkable Rolls Royce Pegasus engine and is a true aviation milestone.” The plaque was unveiled as part of a ceremony rededicating the jet’s prestigious Engineering Heritage Award from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. -
