Their goal was to honor and thank the military service and sacrifice of the South Bay men and women in uniform and their families who have served our country. As President John F. Kennedy had stated, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” Last year’s event was a great success with large crowds, several military branch booths, and both active and veteran military in attendance. This year’s event will be on Sunday, July 3, 2016 at Polliwog Park and we anticipate even larger crowds and increased local community involvement. Will you and your company stand with the City of Manhattan Beach and salute our veterans and current members of our military and their families? 2015 Statistics Military Branch Booths in Attendance Estimated Attendance Army • Navy • Marine Corps • Air Force 5,000 Bands Mira Costa High School Jazz Band 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band (Miramar) 4 City of Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department Manhattan Beach Manhattan Beach, the “Pearl of the South Bay”, was founded in 1912 and offers an eclectic balance of work and play for everyone. It’s home to fashionably chic shopping, award winning restaurants and chefs, mouth-watering dining options, and amazing sunsets. Be sure to take a stroll with the kids to the Roundhouse Aquarium at the end of the historic Manhattan Beach Pier and make sure to look down so you don’t miss the Volleyball Walk of Fame. Sit by the fireplace in Metlox Plaza, rent bikes to ride the paved beach-front bike path, rent surfboards or cruise the water on a stand-up paddle-board, or just roll up your pant legs and collect seashells at low tide. Enjoy one of the many parks and green spaces filled with diverse wildlife or take a stroll through the Botanic Garden. Spa treatments, salon services and yoga workouts with a view are on every block in downtown Manhattan Beach and the North End. History Cities such as this don’t just appear — yet, comparatively speaking, the history of Manhattan Beach covers a relatively short span. In its earliest days, Manhattan Beach was part of the ten-mile ocean frontage of Rancho Sausal Redondo, which means “Round Clump of Willows.” At one time the area was called “Shore Acres” by George Peck, who owned a section of the north end of town. In 1901, John Merrill bought the south portion and called his section Manhattan after his old home, New York City. Peck and Merrill, unable to agree on a city name, flipped a coin and Manhattan won. The first downtown building was built by Merrill around 1901, a small frame building later used for city offices. The official date of incorporation was December 2, 1912. Planks were laid in the sand on Manhattan Avenue for vehicles and along the Strand and side streets for pedestrians. Two wooden piers were built in 1901, one at Center Street and one at Marine Avenue. The Center Street pier supported a wave motor to generate power for the Strand lighting system. Purportedly, part of the wave motor lies buried in the sands at the shore end of the present pier. The next pier was built on the same site and extended about 922 feet into the ocean. Engineer A.L. Harris developed the concept of the circular end for less exposure and damage to the pilings by the waves. The pier was completed and dedicated on July 5, 1920. After World War II a large influx of people came as a result of the desirability of the area for year-round living. Servicemen visiting during the war returned to live here. The development of the defense industry brought many people to the South Bay to reside and work. Much of the land east of Sepulveda was developed to house the influx of people. • Social Media and U-Cut Christmas Tree Operations: Enhancing Indiana’S U-Cut Christmas Tree Marketplace
Social Media and U-Cut Christmas Tree Operations: Enhancing Indiana’s U-Cut Christmas Tree Marketplace Over the past century, the Christmas tree industry has changed from a large market of real trees to a mixed competition market of both artificial and real Christmas trees. Consumers make the switch based on a variety of motives, including household cleanliness, safety perceptions, environmental attitudes, and convenience. All the while the number of Indiana Christmas tree farms has significantly decreased since 2002, resulting in fewer options for real tree buyers. Furthermore, traditional forms of marketing have evolved in recent decades to include a host of online options that are underpinned by social media apps and opportunities. In a recent survey of Indiana Christmas tree growers, most farmers agreed or strongly agreed that the use of social media has or would improve their operation. This document highlights strategies for using online platforms as marketing centerpieces for Indiana’s u-cut Christmas tree farms. WHY SOCIAL MEDIA? Today, younger individuals (and families) are those most likely to buy a real Christmas tree. That said, they are also the most likely to use social media. Social media will not only attract new customers, but maintain a relationship to ensure a return of previous ones. While many people point to the age-old word of mouth approach to marketing, recent research among Pennsylvania agritourism operations revealed that internet sites ranked first in assisting participants in their planning, with traditional word of mouth ranking 5th (Carleo, 2011). Though one could make an argument that social media is just the most modern spin on word of mouth marketing.

EXPERT ADVICE ON HOW TO PROMOTE A BRAND'S HASHTAG ON INSTAGRAM & TWITTER It’s not always easy to stand out in the crowd on social media. You’ve got a lot of competition for your audience’s attention, and you need to find a way to get noticed and stay relevant. The right hashtag can do just that… if people see it, that is. Visibility is a constant challenge for brands both big and small. So we asked thought leaders in different industries: What’s the best way to choose a hashtag and promote it on Instagram and Twitter? What strategies do you recommend to get people to tune in and engage with what you’re posting? Here’s their expert advice – full of steps that you can start using immediately to increase your own brand’s impact on social media. Keep it Consistent For our brand, Ever Bamboo – a natural deodorizer and dehumidifier – our hashtag is #RethinkTheStink, which is also our slogan. We include the tag in most of our Instagram posts and some Twitter posts. We ran a giveaway contest recently, and one of the ways for people to submit entries was to submit a pre-written tweet. The hashtag was included as part of the tweet. The blogger whom ran the contest said that the results, in terms of blog post hits and contest entries (482), were at an all-time high. She said, "This is the best giveaway I've ever run. Usually if I get 20 entries, I'm thrilled. The post has been clicked on 702 times.” K.B.
