or the 20th year Helias All-Southern California Board of Football nade its annual pigskin selections at Heins Hall, naming 36 of Southern California's top prep performers for honors. Made up of Southern California sports journalists, the board has nade selections dating back to 1937. For the first tine in the board's history, co-players of the year were named in the C.I.F, central section division. Unable to choose between Randy Meadows of Downey and Mickey Flynn of Anaheim, writers figured there would be no problem picking between the two following the C.I.F. playoff game in which the two stars faced each other* Following the 13-13 tie between Downey and Anaheim for the C.I.F. crown, the picture was more clouded than ever. Both boys lived up to all expections and there for the board was unanimous in making then co-players of the year for 1956. ' This year both Flynn and Meadows averaged 16 yards per carry. Meadows scored 196 points in 13 ball games, while Flynn scored 22 in 10 games. Although Anaheim played a 13-game schedule, Flynn was injured and didn't play in three games. Both boys are the same size and cone within a step or so of each other at 100 yards. Both Anaheir.i and Downey swamped their playoff foes, Anaheim beat Compton (32-7), San Diego Hoover (34-6), and Redlands (42-20), Downey defeated San Diego (35-21), Beverly Hills (54-14), and Antelope Valley (46-13), Both teams were undefeated going into the playoffs. Other top backs on the first team are Roger Chaney, Redlands' fine quarterback who led Buck Weaver's team to the Citrus Belt title; Joe Avitia, Anaheim's ace fullback who is called the best small (5'9", 155 pounds) football player ever seen anywhere by his coach Clare Van Hoorebeke; and Art Gilmore, tailback for Riverside who scored 126 points in Citrus Belt League competition. In 7 league games Chaney threw for 10 touchdowns and scored 6 himself. He had a 69,4% completion average. Buck Weaver makes no bones about the fact that Chaney is the best quarterback he has ever coached. Another great senior quarterback was Downey's Jack Trumbo who was named to the second team* A fine faker, Trurnbo turned in some fine passing performances for essentially a running ball club. All players on this year's first and second teams are seniors. Jim Smith, guard from Long Beach Poly is the only lower classman on the third team. On January 12th, all players named for Southern Calif ornia C.I.F. football team honors will be presented Helms Board of Football scroll awards. Dick Hill and Clare Van Hoerebeke both of whom finished such fine seasons will receive special tumbler awards. Football coaches and players will be guests of Paul H, Helms and the Helms Foundation at a patio luncheon following the awards ceremony, ' PAST C.I.F. PLAYER OF THE YEAR SELECTIONS

F or the sixth year, Helms All-Southern California Board of 'Football — composed of sports journalists throughout the Southern California area — has selected all-star football teams from the high schools competing in the northern and southern sections of the California Interscholastic Federation. These high schools generally have smaller enrollment than those in the central section of the C.I.F. _ _ This season the Heins Board named Adrian Ledbetter, senior fullback from Brea-Olinda High School as the outstanding player in snail school's play. Ledbetter and the Brea-Olinda Wildcats lost • in the Southern Section finals to Claremont, 19-12. Standing 6|4", and weighing 190 pounds, Ledbetter averaged over 110 yards rushing in five league games and gained 863 yards for the season. Adrian averaged 9 yards per carry in 97 attempts. Besides his fine ability on offense, Ledbetter was one of the finest in prep football this season. His coach, Dick Tucker, calls him the finest he's ever had. Ledbetter scored 17 touchdowns during the year and a total of 106 points. Ledbetter's selection as player of the year was not a unanimous one. Michael Noyes, San Gabriel Mission's fine senior halfback who scored 15 touchdowns during the year, received several votes. Claremont's Hector Gonzalez, top lineman on Len Cohn's Southern Section champions, also received backing for player of the year honors. Laguna Beach placed its star halfback, Bill O'Brien on the first team. Bill averaged 11.6 yards on 87 carries, completed 27 of 61 passes for 536 yards and scored 136 points. John Sor.mercamp, star back at Beaumont this season, scored 114 points and was one of the best extra point kickers in the southland. Darrell Eisner, who led Santa Maria to the San Luis Obispo League title, also vías named to the first t earn backfield. Eisner scored 60 points from his quarterback post, 32 on conversions. Other top performers who were named to the small schools teams were the following: Loy Coon, Brea's right half, who scored 110 points during the season and sparkled on defense along with Ledbetter; Pat Young, St. Monica's senior quarterback, who scored 72 points and passed for eight TDs; Tom Hitch, Claremont High's fine halfback, who scored 60 points; Chuck Wood, fullback on Escondido's Avocado League champions, who scored 106 points; Pete Aguirre from Mater Dei, who sparked the Monarchs to the northern group title; Roger Short, who averaged 10.6 yards per carry and scored 103 points in 9 games; and Larry Parque, quarterback for Bell Gardens, who along with Jim Sheffer, was a top performer in the Rio Hondo League for 1956. All-Southern California Board of Football named co-players of the year in the Western League at its annual meeting last week at Helms Hall. Bob Stevens, Venice fullback, and Philip Toorvald, Hamilton tackle, were the players selected to share top billing in the Western League for 1956. Both Fairfax and Hamilton finished the year with identical won-lost records, but Fairfax was awarded the league crown since she beat Hamilton, 34-25. Frank Cullom is high in his praise of Toorvald, "Phil is team captain, an "A" student and was almost single handedly responsible for our team's success this year. He is the most outstanding player on offense and defense we've had in the past two years." Bob Stevens, hard-charging Venice fullback, was Grayson Turney's top ball player. Stevens led the league in scoring and total yards gained. Bob is considered an excellent college prospect because of his great strength and tremendous running ability. Fairfax led in placing players on the first team, with Bardavid, Yusem, Leiner and Snookal making the honor eleven. Fairfax also placed four of its seniors on the second team. Hamilton placed three players, while Venice and Marshall landed two spots each. Hollywood placed Chuck Beagle in the back- field. Frank Scarlata, second team guard in 1955, was the only player to repeat on this year's team. All players named for honors will receive Helms scroll awards from All Southern California Board of Football. These awards, listing all players named to this season's teams, will be mailed to the schools for presentation. Bob Stevens and Phil Toorvald will receive their player of the year medal awards at the 20th Annual Awards program, Saturday morning, January 12th at Helms Hall.

Jordan High School, Marine League champions for 1956, placed three of its team on the All-Marine League first squad, as members of All-Southern Calif ornia Board of Football met at Helms Hall to make the annual gridiron choices. Jordan won six of eight games during the complete season, four out of five during the league campaign. Jordan players selected to the number one league team are Walter Darton, senior end; Jimmy Duckett, senior guard and repeater from last year's first team; and Eugene Gaines, top fullback and linebacker, who also made last season's all-league first team. Billy Younger, Jordan's quarterback, was named to the second team. Player of the year honors went to 's Bobby Brown, who made the second squad last year. Captain of his team, Brown carried 84 times for 538 yards and a 6.4 average from his halfback position. Brown was a unanimous choice for top-player honors. Besides the repeaters already named, two other performers also were named to last year's team. Frank Greminger, powerful runner and linebacker from Gardena, repeated as a first team member and Robert Bernstein, San Pedro, was again named to the second squad. Distribution on the two league teams was quite even. Westchester and Narbonne placed five players each on the teams, while Jordan and Banning had four of their performers selected. San Pedro and Gardena placed three each. This marks the 20th year that Paul H. Helms, through Helms Athletic Foundation, has made awards available to Los Angeles City High School football players. Each boy named to this year's All-Marine League team — both first and second squads — will receive scroll awards from All-Southern California Board of Athletics. Player of the year, Bobby Brown, will receive his medal award at the 20th Annual Football Awards program at Helms Hall, January 12th.

Headed by Northern League player of the year Tim Alexander, Eagle Rock placed tackle Bruce Hochevar and backs Ron Jorgensen and Alan Shields on the first team. The team's closest battle was a 7-6 engagement with Franklin. For five league games only 18 points were scored against Eagle Rock. Leading coach Jae's defensive outfit was league player of the year Tim Alexander. Tim is considered by his coach, "The best defensive end in the city." Los Angeles High School's Romans, undefeated in Southern League play and winners of seven of eight games during 1956, led in placing men on the annual all-league first team when members of All-Southern California Board of Football met at Helms Hall last week. Players named to the first squad from Herry Edelson's league champions are junior end Robert Levingston; tackle Kenny Goodman; guard Doug Furuta; and back Ron Starkman. Dorsey and Washington placed three players each on the honor squad, while Fremont placed two. Player of the year honors were awarded Ron Miller, second team selection in 1955. Miller averaged over five yards per carry for Washington's Generals accounting for over 600 yards. Miller led Washington to a 3-2 league season, losing two close ones to Fremont and Los Angeles in the final games of the year. Five players are back again this year, following selection on last year's second All-Southern League team. Kenju Sasaki, Ron Miller and Phil Stewart were elevated to the first team this year, while Carl Carson and George Rollins, Jefferson linemen, retained their second team positions. Sasaki and L.A. High's Levingston, are the only juniors on the first team. Dorsey's passing combination of Phil Stewart and David Hoffenberg was most effective during the year, Stewart threw 14 touchdown passes during the season and his favorite target was Hoffenberg. For the 20th year All-Southern California Board of Football will present scroll awards to those boys named for All-Southern League honors. Ron Miller will receive his player of the year medal award at the January 12th awards presentation ceremony to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Van Nuys High School, Los Angeles City football powerhouse which averaged slightly over 31 points for eight games during 1956, ran off with places on this year's All-Valley League team when members of All-Southern California Board of Football met at Helms Hall to make annual pigskin selections. Headed by 1955 All-City back Jerry Mollett, Winston Tucker's Valley League champs placed eight players on the 1956 first squad. The eight players to make the first team are all seniors, while Dave Duncan and Don MacAdam, named to the second squad, are both juniors. Van Nuys was clearly the class of the Valley League in 1956 and one of the strongest teams seen in city ranks in some time. Closest game for Van Nuys this season was a 22-13 victory over Oxnard in their opener. Following this encounter, no team scored more than once on Tucker's charges. Player of the year laurals were won unanimously by Fullback Jerry Mollett. A 6' 2", 200 pound blockbuster, Mollett carried the ball 113 times for 1,038 and a 9.2 average. He scored 15 touchdowns rushing this year, better than one third of his team's total points. Jerry has led the league in scoring the past two years. Four other players besides Mollett repeated from last year's Valley teams. Ron Kiczenski was on the second team in '55 from San Fernando; Bob Campbell of Canoga Park was named to the first team last year, while Jim Boylan, Birmingham, and Nark Millard, North Hollywood, repeated on the second team. Helms All-Southern California Board of Football awards will be given each member of this year's All-Valley first and second team. Jerry Mollett will be presented his player of the year medal award at the 20th Annual All-Southern California Board of Football Awards program to be held at Helms Hall on Satur day, January 12th, at 10:30 a.m.
