WILLIAM, CARDINAL ALLEN, N May 1582 the Papal Nuncio in Paris wrote to Cardinal Galli, Pope IGregory XIII's Secretary of State, to update him on yet another scheme to reconvert England and Scotland to the Catholic faith. The plan had been concocted by the Spanish Ambassador in London, Don Bernardina Men- doza, in consultation with Esme Stuart, Duke of Lennox, the French Duke de Guise, and the Jesuits William Creighton and Robert Persons. It involved landing an invasion force of 8,000 Spanish and Italian soldiers in Scotland. Expanded to 20,000 by an expected rush of devout local recruits, the army would march south into England, overthrow Elizabeth, liberate Mary Queen of Scots, and set her on the throne of both kingdoms. This half-baked scheme, which was welcomed by the Pope as a glorious new crusade, needed a religious figurehead who could command the loyalty of all English Catholics and serve as a rallying-point for soldiers, gentry and the devout Catholic faithful. Everyone agreed that there was only one possible choice. The President of the English College at Rheims, William Allen, should be appointed to the key religious and secular post in the north of England, the bishopric of Durham. Allen, the Nuncio claimed, was a man whose authority and reputation stand so high with the whole nation that his mere presence . will have a greater effect with the English than several thousand soldiers . all the banished gentlemen bear him such reverence that at a word of his they would do anything.' All we can claim with any degree of historical certainty is that Jesus died some time around Passover (perhaps a week or so before the feast) between 29 and 34 CE. -

Roukema (eds), Passion of Protestants, Kampen 2004, 27-48 Riemer Roukema Martin Luther‟s passion was to proclaim his discovery that man is justified by faith in Christ. This meant to him that, in man‟s relationship with God, he does not have to correspond to God‟s „righteousness‟ by his own „works‟ or efforts, but that God freely bestows the righteousness of Christ on everyone who believes in Christ as Saviour.1 Luther even intro- duced his discovery into his translation of Rom. 3:28. Whereas Paul wrote there that „man is justified by faith apart from works of the law‟, Luther translated that „man is justified without works of the law, only by faith‟.2 Although this translation was fiercely criticized, he vigorously defended it, saying that a version including „only‟ made up a more natural German sentence than without this adverb. Moreover, he referred to Ambrose and Augustine who said before him that faith alone makes one righteous.3 In Latin, „only by faith‟ is sola fide; combined with sola gratia, „only by grace‟, these words became important slogans of Lutheran and Calvinist Protestantism. For sola gratia, one may refer to Rom. 3:24, „justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus‟ (RSV), and to Eph. 2:8-9a, „For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not because of works‟ (RSV). -

Faithfulness to Tradition: a Roman Catholic Perspective
Easter 2006 Faithfulness to Tradition A Roman Catholic Perspective John E. Thiel or moderns, the question of what it means to be faithful to a religious tradition is a good example of question-begging. Answering the question of faithfulness Fpresupposes that one knows what the tradition is to which one might be faithful. But in modernity, in the West at least and perhaps even globally by now, religious tra- ditions have become precarious things, contested spaces where the issue of faithfulness has been subsumed by the ambiguity of traditions themselves. The traditional notion of tradition itself has become questionable in light of our heightened awareness of the historicity of traditions and their often surprising pluralism. Historical investigation of religious traditions through time and culture reveals the remarkable changes they have undergone in belief, doctrine, and practice, the living constituents of a tradition. This same historical sensibility grasps easily the synchronic implications of this diachronic fact. Any religious tradition broadly construed by a singular name is, in any present moment, actually a remarkable variety of smaller communities that possess clearly dis- tinguishable beliefs and practices, however much they might share a family resem- blance. For those intellectually aware of the problem that historicity poses for tradition, and for many more who emotionally feel its effects, being faithful to a religious tradi- tion has become as difficult as saying what that same religious tradition is. My own Roman Catholic Christian tradition is a very good example of this twin problem of identifying and being faithful to tradition. One could argue for several rea- sons that it is the very best example of this problem. -

BnnNanD FrsHER, Archivista dell'Archidiocesi di Westminster The Archives in the keeping of the Archbishop of Westmin- ster, or what are more usually called the Westminster Archives, form a unique collection of ecclesiastical documents of the first importance. Owing to the break in our Catholic history with the coming of the Reformation in England, there are however very few medi- aeval documents in this collection. There is a fairly extensive collection of papers relating to Selby Abbey in Yorkshire dating from the 13th to the 16th century. There are some presentments for heresy in the diocese of Norwich in the later half of the 15th century and an early manuscript copy of the Charter of the Chap- ter of rvl/ells Cathedral. The collection becomes a coherent body of docrments from 1558. On November 17th 1558 Elizabeth I imprisoned all the Cath- olic bishops, with the exception of Bishop Kitchin who conform- ed to the State religion. No attempt was made to appoint any- one to replace the bishops and the religious history of the early years of Elizabeth's reign is largely one of drift. Rome was wait- ing perhaps in the hope that Elizabeth might be won over while the vacillating Philip II of Spain was striving successfully to dis- suade the Pope from any action which might offend Elizabeth. Matthew 26-28: The Death and Resurrection of Jesus The final three chapters of Matthew’s gospel follow Mark’s lead in telling of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. At each stage Matthew adds to Mark’s story material that addresses concerns of his community. The overall story will be familiar to most readers. We shall focus on the features that are distinctive of Matthew’s version, while keeping the historical situation of Jesus’ condemnation in view. Last Supper, Gethsemane, Arrest and Trial (26:1–75) The story of Jesus’ last day begins with the plot of the priestly leadership to do away with Jesus (26:1–5). As in Mark 14:1-2 they are portrayed as acting with caution, fearing that an execution on the feast of Passover would upset the people (v 5). Like other early Christians, Matthew held the priestly leadership responsible for Jesus’ death and makes a special effort to show that Pilate was a reluctant participant. Matthew’s apologetic concerns probably color this aspect of the narrative. While there was close collaboration between the Jewish priestly elite and the officials of the empire like Pilate, the punishment meted out to Jesus was a distinctly Roman one. His activity, particularly in the Temple when he arrived in Jerusalem, however he understood it, was no doubt perceived as a threat to the political order and it was for such seditious activity that he was executed. Mark (14:3–9) and John (12:1–8) as well as Matthew (26:6–13) report a dramatic story of the anointing of Jesus by a repentant sinful woman, which Jesus interprets as a preparation for his burial (v. -
