INCIDENT REPORT PROCEEDURES AND CONTACT NUMBERS FOR NORTHERN NEW JERSEY AND SOUTHERN NEW YORK PARKS

Procedure: In most cases the reporting of incidents in our regions parks should follow the same procedure. In an emergency call 911. This should be done only for an emergency such a fire or other life threatening condition encountered on the trail. It is not an appropriate use of 911 to report an illegal campsite or all-terrain vehicle sighting. If you encounter illegal uses of the trails such as bikes where they’re not supposed to be, off-road vehicle activity, illegal camping, damaging or removing vegetation, dumping, unauthorized trail work, etc. follow these steps: 1. Make a note of the time of the incident. 2. Make a note of the location of the incident. Mark your map if necessary. 3. Prepare a description of the incident with as much detail as possible. 4. Be prepared to describe the perpetrator(s). 5. Be prepared to describe any vehicles, including color of the vehicle, motorized or not, etc. 6. Note any license plate numbers that you can see. 7. Take photos if you can. 8. Report the incident ASAP. 9. Send a copy of your report to the Trails Director at the NY-NJ Trail Conference Office.

Use your best judgment when approaching people engaged in what may appear to be illegal activity. If they are breaking the law they may not hesitate to break your jaw! Taking photographs of and confronting these people must be done with caution.

Report first to the park in which the incident occurred then follow up with a report to the Trail Conference Trails Director at the above address, or by email at: [email protected] or on our web site at: http://www.nynjtc.org/trail.html#Monitor
