EASTERN EUROPE ADRIFT? MARIA BUCUR (Bloomington, Indiana) As I wandered recently through a local bookstore's travel section in search for information on Romania and Hungary, I found myself confronted with the reality that the discarding of Eastern Europe as a cohesive region encompassing all countries from the Baltic to the Adriatic has reached the mainstream media. The section still identified "Eastern Europe" by an "old style" faded label contained in fact guides to Central Europein most cases inclusive of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary and the Balkans inclusive of the former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, and sometimes Romania. Has Eastern Europe ceased to represent a useful concept, or is it just a label that is becoming bereft of any meaning? My contention is that much as this has become a chaotic and increasingly contested notion, Eastern Europe stillholds an important position in the intellectual discourse about this area and Europe in general. This is especially the case for historians, but social scientists and policy makers are still making frequent use of it, reinforcing the fact that this concept still has a lot of currency, in spite of claims that it has become obsolete or too compromised by political abuse. At the same time, the geographical boundaries and intellectual construct that Eastern Europe encompasses are in flux, as they have been over the last three hundred years, as Larry Wolff has shown in his recent study Inventing Eastern Europe: The Map of Civilization on the Mind of the Enlightenment.' This essay argues that the notion of Eastern Europe is still a powerful vehicle for constituting national as well as regional identity (East-Central-West-North-South), in the context of the current power structures and intellectual discourses generated especially by and around the European Union, Eastern Europe emerged as a cultural construct out of debates in Western Europe with regard to Europeanness (as the totality of the Christian civilization), initially identified by the Catholic Church with its own brand of Christianity first I See Larry Wolff, "Voltaire's Public and the idea of Eastern Europe: Toward a Literary Sociology of Continental Division." IX.

Genus Vol. 23(4): 461-563 Wrocław, 28 XII 2012 Ants of Greece – checklist, comments and new faunistic data (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) LECH BOROWIEC1 & SEBASTIAN SALATA2 Department of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Taxonomy, University of Wrocław, Przybyszewskiego, 63/77, 51-148 Wrocław, Poland, e-mail: [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT. A list of 291 ant species recorded from Greece are given but approximately 15% of taxa need confirmation due to recent studies on European ants and reinterpretation of several taxa. The following 17 species are recorded from Greece for the first time:Camponotus sannini TOHMÉ & TOHMÉ, Crematogaster jehovae FOREL, Formica bruni KUTTER, Lasius jensi SEIFERT, Lasius nitidigaster SEIFERT, Lepisiota dolabellae (FOREL), Myrmica lonae FINZI, Myrmica tulinae ELMES, RADCHENKO & AKTAÇ, Temnothorax flavicornis (EMERY), Temnothorax sordidulus (MÜLLER), Temnothorax turcicus (SANTSCHI), Tetramorium hungaricum RÖSZLER, and five species not attributed to a named species:Camponotus cf. lateralis sp. 1, Camponotus cf. lateralis sp. 2, Lepisiota cf. melas sp. 1, Lepisiota cf. syriaca sp. 1, and Tetramorium cf. caespitum sp. 1. Camponotus candiotes is recorded as new species to Croatia. New faunistic data for 132 other species are given. Key words: entomology, zoogeography, catalogue, ants, Greece. INTroDUCTIoN The history of knowledge of Greek ants goes back to the early 19th century (BRUllÉ 1833) but due to the complicated history of Greece, for many years the ant fauna of the country was studied less intensively and by foreign entomologists. No regional monograph was published and the first key concerning also Greek fauna and the first checklist were papers by AGOSTI and COLLINGWOOD (1987 a, b).

Acta entomologica serbica, 2006, 11 (1/2): 1-10 UDC 595.754 (497):57.063.6 591.96(497) NEW RECORDS OF ARADIDAE FROM THE BALKAN COUNTRIES (HETEROPTERA, ARADIDAE) E. HEISS Josef-Schraffl-Strasse 2a, A-6020 Innsbruck, Austria ABSTRACT: New and additional records for 29 species of Aradidae from the Balkan countries are reported. Among them, eight species records are new for the following countries: Aradus aterrimus Fieber for Serbia; Aradus kuthyi Horvath for Greece and Bosnia-Herzegovina; Aradus ribauti Wagner for Albania; Aradus serbicus Horvath for Greece; Aradus somcheticus Kiritshenko for Slovenia; Quilnus discedens (Horvath) for Romania; Calisius salicis Horvath for Bulgaria and Mezira tremulae Germar for Romania. KEYWORDS: Heteroptera, Aradidae, new records, Balkan countries INTRODUCTION In order to obtain reliable distribution data for the fauna of Palaearctic Aradidae, important older (mostly misidentified) material and recent specimens from institutional or private collections, including rich material from the author’s own collection were examined and identified. As a result, many new and unpublished records for most European countries were assembled. Those from the Balkan countries (including new species records for some countries) are communicated in this pa- per to facilitate future faunistic studies in this still insufficiently investigated area. Most misidenti- fications were observed in species of the “betulae“ group, which are difficult to identify without examination of male genital structures. Abbreviations used follow those of “Catalogue of Heteroptera of the Palaearctic Region“ (HEISS,2001): For countries where the records originate: AL - Albania; BA - Bosnia and Herzegovina; BG - Bulgaria; HR - Croatia; GR - Greece; MK - Macedonia; MN - Montenegro; RO - Romania; SI - Slovenia; RS - Serbia.

  • Among the Most Notable Debates in Academic Tourism Research Is The
Pavlos Paraskevaidis and Konstantinos Andriotis ALTRUISM IN TOURISM: SOCIAL EXCHANGE THEORY VS ALTRUISTIC SURPLUS PHENOMENON IN HOST VOLUNTEERING ABSTRACT Taking into consideration the scarcity of research on volunteering and altruistic behavior of host communities, this exploratory study examines altruism in tourism from the viewpoint of members of voluntary tourism associations. A literature review reveals two general types of altruism, i.e. reciprocal and true, as well as two theoretical constructs, namely Social Exchange Theory (SET) and Altruistic Surplus Phenomenon (ASP). By taking a sample of 21 members from two voluntary tourism associations located in the municipality of Veria, Northern Greece, this study confirms that reciprocal altruism is one of several motives for participating in voluntary tourism associations. Additionally, it is shown that ASP is more adequate than SET to interpret the study groups’ social behavior. Keywords: Altruism, Social Exchange Theory, Altruistic Surplus Phenomenon, Motivation, Host volunteering, Voluntary tourism associations INTRODUCTION Altruism is the basis for some socially acceptable activities such as volunteering, charity, philanthropy, and blood donation (Piliavin & Charng, 1990). However altruistic behavior, such as helping strangers, may expose individuals to risky social environments and attract criminals. For instance, Homant (2010, p.1199) suggests that being helpful to strangers “may leave one vulnerable to a crime committed by the person being helped, such as a scam or a theft of some sort”. Nevertheless, altruistic behavior is generally described as a selfless behavior that benefits third parties’ welfare and by doing so it provides an understanding “of social solidarity in modern societies” (Wuthnow, 1993, p.344). Due to its significance in understanding social behavior, altruism has been studied in social sciences, in contrast to selfishness and the dominant self-interested behavior of modern man, who focuses prominently on personal achievements and goals.

W większości przypadków wędrówki te odbywały się w ramach Turcji osmańskiej, zdarzały się jednak i migracje poszczególnych rodzin poza jej granice, głównie do państw Europy środkowo-wschodniej.

It was based on ample material (202 adult individuals) using samples from localities that adequately cover the entire distributional range of each species in Greece. The five species and the two subgenera (Microtus and Terricola) were morphometrically clearly distinguished and discriminating variables were revealed. However, morphometrics did not provide robust criteria to infer phylogenetic relations among species. Furthermore, three species, M. (M.) guentheri, M. (M.) rossiaemeridionalis and M. (T.) thomasi, exhibited considerable intraspecific size or shape variation, which was mostly random and not associated with geographical proximity.

DUNKEL3 Abstract: As a result of extensive fieldwork in Northern Greece prior to and in 2019, nine new species and six new subspecies of Hieracium and one new species of Pilosella are described: Hieracium abietopsis GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. caesiolympicum GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. bractolympicum GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. diaphanoidopsis subsp. diaphanoidopsis and subsp. volakasense GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. jankolympicum GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. pellense GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. perdentatum GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. thessalonikense GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. vermiense GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. hypochoeroides subsp. paikoanum GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. pseudosparsum subsp. elatianum GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. retyezatense subsp. macilentoides GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL and subsp. vrontousense GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL; H. transiens subsp. excentricum GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL, and Pilosella pieriana GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL. All species are illustrated. Intermediate species with morphological characters of H. olympicum, i.e., stem and leaves with rigid simple hairs up to 25 mm long, and thick campanulate flower heads with a bright or even white tomentose indument rich of stellate hairs, are categorized in a new section, sect. Olympica GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL.
