Puritan New England: Plymouth A New England for Puritans The second major area to be colonized by the English in the first half of the 17th century, New England, differed markedly in its founding principles from the commercially oriented Chesapeake tobacco colonies. Settled largely by waves of Puritan families in the 1630s, New England had a religious orientation from the start. In England, reform-minded men and women had been calling for greater changes to the English national church since the 1580s. These reformers, who followed the teachings of John Calvin and other Protestant reformers, were called Puritans because of their insistence on purifying the Church of England of what they believed to be unscriptural, Catholic elements that lingered in its institutions and practices. Many who provided leadership in early New England were educated ministers who had studied at Cambridge or Oxford but who, because they had questioned the practices of the Church of England, had been deprived of careers by the king and his officials in an effort to silence all dissenting voices. Other Puritan leaders, such as the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Winthrop, came from the privileged class of English gentry. These well-to-do Puritans and many thousands more left their English homes not to establish a land of religious freedom, but to practice their own religion without persecution. Puritan New England offered them the opportunity to live as they believed the Bible demanded. In their “New” England, they set out to create a model of reformed Protestantism, a new English Israel. The conflict generated by Puritanism had divided English society because the Puritans demanded reforms that undermined the traditional festive culture. -

THE REFORMATION IN LEICESTER AND LEICESTERSHIRE, c.1480–1590 Eleanor Hall Since its arrival in England, never did Christianity undergo such a transformation as that of the Reformation. By the end of the sixteenth century the official presence of Catholicism had almost entirely disappeared in favour of Protestantism, the permanent establishment of which is still the institutional state religion. This transformation, instigated and imposed on the population by a political elite, had a massive impact on the lives of those who endured it. In fact, the progression of these religious developments depended on the compliance of the English people, which in some regions was often absent. Indeed, consideration must be given to the impact of the Reformation on these localities and social groups, in which conservatism and nostalgia for the traditional faith remained strong. In spite of this, the gradual acceptance of Protestantism by the majority over time allowed its imposition and the permanent establishment of the Church of England. Leicestershire is a county in which significant changes took place. This paper examines these changes and their impact on, and gradual acceptance by, the various religious orders, secular clergy, and the laity in the town and county. Important time and geographical comparisons will be drawn in consideration of the overall impact of the Reformation, and the extent to which both clergy and laity conformed to the religious changes imposed on them, and managed to retain their religious devotion in the process. INTRODUCTION The English Reformation is one of the periods in history that attracts a high level of interest and debate. -

Two Civil Wars, Two Centuries Apart Posted by Dick.Myers_Editor On 10/19/2011 Historic St. Mary’s City had on display this past weekend two civil wars, more than two centuries apart: the English Civil War and the American Civil War. The English Civil War was actually a series of three armed conflicts starting in 1642 and ending in 1651. Historic St. Mary’s City’s website describes the impact of the English Civil War on the young colony: “Maryland was a growing, prospering colony in the decade after its founding in 1634. But in early 1645, it was nearly destroyed by ripples from a conflict that was ravaging England. Since 1642 England had been embroiled in a vicious civil war between King Charles I and Parliament. The violence reached the shores of America in 1645 at St. Mary’s City. Captain Richard Ingle, commander of the ship Reformation, launched a sneak attack on the capital of the colony on 14 February. Ingle was operating under letters of marque from Parliament and saw Maryland as a legitimate target due to its royalist preferences and the fact that the colony was owned by a Catholic proprietor. Furthermore, Ingle had personal scores to settle with some of the colony’s leaders. The only military force to resist Ingle was the militia and since no attack was expected, there was not time to assemble troops. Ingle’s men captured Fort St. Inigoes and then the capital. They began looting the homes of Maryland’s leaders and Catholics and burned structures during a period that became known as “the Plundering Time.” For the most comprehensive account of the attack and the events of this “time of troubles”, see Riordan’s The Plundering Time: Maryland and the English Civil War, 1645-1646. -

Interpreted in various ways – as vicious criminals, romantic heroes, sexual revolutionaries or anarchistic opponents of capitalism – pirates possess an apparently inexhaustible appeal.2 The problem with “pirates,” of course, is that defining them is largely a ques- tion of perspective: perpetrators of maritime violence from Francis Drake to Blackbeard have been seen as both champions and murderers, and scholars have interrogated this very dimension of piracy as a historical concept. -

‘An Engine Which the World Sees Nothing Of ’: Revealing Dissent Under Charles I’s ‘Personal Rule’ Jared van Duinen In 2000, Jonathan Scott characterized the years of Charles’s personal rule by the term the ‘peace of silence’. By this he meant that the seeming peace and quiescence of the 1630s was chiefly due to the silencing of dissent. For much of the twentieth century, this ‘peace of silence’ could be found reflected in the historiography of early Stuart England. Even when the personal rule received its first full-length study – Kevin Sharpe’s 1992 The Personal Rule of Charles I – the story of dissent in the 1630s remained largely underexplored. In order to uncover the covert and diffused nature of dissident thought under Charles’s personal rule, it is necessary for research to adopt a commensurately localized or decentred frame of reference. Work which has done this has often revealed previously obscured veins of dissent. A future direction for studies of dissident thought and action in the 1630s could lie in network analysis and, in particular, the examination of puritan networks of association. ‘Not only all mouths are stopped, but the parliament doors sealed for many years.’ ‘When we ... have any great things to be accomplished, the best policy is to work by an engine which the world sees nothing of.’1 Both these contemporary quotes, from quite different perspectives, refer to the Caroline 1630s, the years of Charles I’s ‘personal rule’. The first is from, if not an ‘insider’ figure then at least a servant of the establishment, the diplomat Sir Thomas Roe. -

We invite you to explore different perspectives on the Reformation, including the impact of print in producing the German, Swiss, radical, and English reform movements, as well as the response from the Catholic Church and the political ramifications of reform. Indulgences granted by several Popes of Rome in the several churches of Rome collected by William Crashaw in Fiscus Papalis, 1621. V.a.510(8), fol. 1-2v In 1095, Pope Urban II first introduced indulgences as pardons for sin to entice fighters to join the crusades. Later, these ephemeral sheets of forgiveness were granted for completed pilgrimages, for purchase to release souls from purgatory (the doctrine itself authorized in 1439), and were sold to cover sins during life out of the “Treasury of Merits,” a spiritual coffer that contained redemption through the deaths of martyrs and Christ. Rome officially announced the sale of indulgences in exchange for pardon of sin in 1476, 41 years before the 95 Theses. Pope Leo X provided the bishopric of Mainz to Albrecht of Brandenburg and then allowed him to sell indulgences to pay back personal debts. Indulgences are granted to this day for receiving Holy Communion, reciting the rosary, the exercise of the Stations of the Cross and reading scripture, among other acts. Here we see a manuscript account of the various indulgences offered and received, copied from Crashaw’s Fiscus Papalis and provides information on the amount of time remitted from purgatory. -
