It was to aid the families of the gaoled unionists that William Lane wrote The Workingman's Paradise (1892). 'The first part is laid during the summer of 1888-9 and covers two days; the second at the commencement of the Queensland bush excitement in 1891, covering a somewhat shorter time.' (iii) The materials of the shearers' strike and the maritime strike that preceded it in 1890 are not, then, the explicit materials of Lane's novel. But these political confrontations are the off-stage reference of the novel's main characters. They are a major unwritten, but present, component of the novel. The second chapter of part II alludes both to the defeat of the maritime strike and the beginnings ofthe shearers' strike, forthcoming in the novel's time, already defeated in the reader's time. Those voices preaching moderation in the maritime strike, are introduced into the discussion only to be discounted. The unionists who went round 'talking law and order to the chaps on strike and rounding on every man who even boo'd as though he were a blackleg' have realised the way they were co-opted and used by the 'authorities'. 'The man who told me vowed it would be a long time before he'd do policeman's work again. -

Romantic Nationalism and the Descent into Myth: William Lane's Th e Wo rkingman 's Paradise ANDREW McCANN University of Melbourne he study of Australian lit�rature has been and no doubt still is a fo rm of nationalist pedagogy in which the primary object of nationalist discourse, the people, is emblematisedT in the fo rmation of a literary culture. The easy simultaneity of text and populace implied here is a recurring trope in the writing of Australian cultural history. Needless to say the 1890s is the decade that most clearly embodies this simul taneity in its foregrounding of an apparent movement from Romanticism to a more directly political realism. The narrative of the people's becoming, in other words, involves a stylistic shift that is seen as integral to, even constitutive of, political consciousness in the years before Federation. By this reckoning, the shift to realism concretises the perception of locality, the sense of time and space, we associate \•lith the nation. Realism effects, in Mikhail Bakhtin's words, 'a creative humanisation of this locality, which transforms a part of terrestrial space into a place of historical life for people' (31). The trouble with this version of Australian literary history is that it mistakes obvious stylistic differences for a genuine and radical discursive shift. In positing the movement from Romanticism to realism as the key to national becoming it assumes a direct correspondence between the aesthetic and the ideological. This elides what, looking from a slightly different angle, is equally obvious about late-nineteenth Ct'ntury Australian nationalism, and perhaps nationalism in general: that is, the nation, with its attendant notions of organically bonded community, locality and autochthony, is not simply haunted by Romanticism, it is unambiguously Romantic. -

‘But Once in a History’: Canberra’s David Headon Foundation Stones and Naming Ceremonies, 12 March 1913∗ When King O’Malley, the ‘legendary’ King O’Malley, penned the introduction to a book he had commissioned, in late 1913, he searched for just the right sequence of characteristically lofty, even visionary phrases. After all, as the Minister of Home Affairs in the progressive Labor government of Prime Minister Andrew Fisher, he had responsibility for establishing the new Australian nation’s capital city. Vigorous promotion of the idea, he knew, was essential. So, at the beginning of a book entitled Canberra: Capital City of the Commonwealth of Australia, telling the story of the milestone ‘foundation stones’ and ‘naming’ ceremonies that took place in Canberra, on 12 March 1913, O’Malley declared for posterity that ‘Such an opportunity as this, the Commonwealth selecting a site for its national city in almost virgin country, comes to few nations, and comes but once in a history’.1 This grand foundation narrative of Canberra—with its abundance of aspiration, ambition, high-mindedness, courage and curiosities—is still not well-enough known today. The city did not begin as a compromise between a feuding Sydney and Melbourne. Its roots comprise a far, far, better yarn than that. Unlike many major cities of the world, it was not created because of war, because of a revolution, disease, natural disaster or even to establish a convict settlement. Rather, a nation lucky enough to be looking for a capital city at the beginning of a new century knuckled down to the task with creativity and diligence. -

Artists and architects, designers and decorators, dare to be modern. A city with nightclubs, where you might glimpse the actress Hu Die, the Butterfly. A city where art and culture burn bright. A city of glamour, but also a city of squalor and vice. A city with Western department stores established by Chinese-Australian merchants. This is Shanghai. For some, the Great Depression barely touches Shanghai. This is a place of riotous abundance. The rich and the famous continue to party in the Paris of the Orient. The buildings continue to rise. And the department stores continue to flourish on Nanking Road. And there is one store built in the latest art deco style that has the only escalators in China, has a rooftop garden, has air-conditioning on every floor and the largest porcelain department in Shanghai - the Sun Company department store. And one person who made this achievement possible is the Company Secretary, William Liu. Determined Reformers William Liu was born in Sydney in 1893, to a Chinese father and an English mother. At the age of seven in 1900, William was sent to China for a traditional Chinese education, returning to Australia in 1908. After eight years he needed to work on his English. At the age of seven, I and my younger brother Charlie went to Hong Kong, then inland China, to our father’s village, about a hundred miles1 south west of Hong Kong and Canton. -

Illustrating Mobility: Networks of Visual Print Culture and the Periodical Contexts of Modern Australian Writing VICTORIA KUTTAINEN James Cook University The history of periodical illustration offers a rich example of the dynamic web of exchange in which local and globally distributed agents operated in partnership and competition. These relationships form the sort of print network Paul Eggert has characterised as being shaped by everyday exigencies and ‘practical workaday’ strategies to secure readerships and markets (19). In focussing on the history of periodical illustration in Australia, this essay seeks to show the operation of these localised and international links with reference to four case studies from the early twentieth century, to argue that illustrations offer significant but overlooked contexts for understanding the production and consumption of Australian texts.1 The illustration of works published in Australia occurred within a busy print culture that connected local readers to modern innovations and technology through transnational networks of literary and artistic mobility in the years also defined by the rise of cultural nationalism. The nationalist Bulletin (1880–1984) benefited from a newly restricted copyright scene, while also relying on imported technology and overseas talent. Despite attempts to extend the illustrated material of the Bulletin, the Lone Hand (1907–1921) could not keep pace with technologically superior productions arriving from overseas. The most graphically impressive modern Australian magazines, the Home (1920–1942) and the BP Magazine (1928–1942), invested significant energy and capital into placing illustrated Australian stories alongside commercial material and travel content in ways that complicate our understanding of the interwar period. One of the workaday practicalities of the global book trade which most influenced local Australian producers and consumers prior to the twentieth century was the lack of protection for international copyright. -

Abstract John Dwyer (1856-1934) was a London docks foreman who emigrated to Australia in 1888. Leaving his London employment on his 'own accord', Dwyer embarked upon a quest for recognition - recognition of his rights as a worker and his identity as an individual. Dwyer and his family arrived in New South Wales to be greeted by the economic depression of the 1890s, and state and employer mobilisation against organised labour and working class radicals. Dwyer was soon reduced to scraping together a living as a boarding house manager in Sydney's poorest districts, as he helped organise the Active Service Brigade, which agitated on behalf of the unemployed. Dwyer's surviving papers - twenty-one boxes of correspondence, manuscripts, minutes, handbills, tracts and newspaper clippings, plus several other volumes - document the life of a working class political radical and autodidact who embraced temperance, and who was fascinated by new ideas in religion and science - Darwinism, Theosophy and occult spiritualism. This thesis places Dwyer in the context of the intense ideological ferment of new ideas in politics, theology and science that characterised the period 1890-1914. Ideas that aggressively challenged the old certainties, and which Dwyer embraced in his project to 'change the face of the world.' Changing the world contested with the need to endure its conditions. -

Science, Fashion, Knowledge and Imagination: Shopfront Natural History in 19th-Century Sydney ANNE COOTE isiting Sydney in 1845, a young French tourist, Eugène Delessert, was agreeably surprised by the advanced state of the town’s V commercial development and particularly impressed by the array of native birds on show in the Hunter Street establishment of the natural history dealer, John William Roach. During his time in this colonial capital Delessert, as he reported later, often enjoyed gazing at the brilliantly coloured plumage of the several hundred birds which fluttered among the shrubs inside Roach’s large aviary. The parrots and pigeons delighted him, but equally remarkable, he thought, was the lovely Regent Bower Bird, a study in velvet black and brilliant gold. Sydney dealers, Delessert informed his readers, had this bird for sale in quite large numbers.1 Sydney Journal Vol 4, No 1 (2013): 1–18 ISBN: 1835-0151 © UTSePress and the author Sydney Journal | Coote The existence of such a trade in native species, as Delessert would have understood, signalled that a good many people in this far-flung colonial outpost shared the cultural and intellectual engagement with natural history which was common in the metropole. Indeed, businesses like that of Roach with their novelty, noise and colour apparently found a ready market in mid-nineteenth century Sydney, with six trading for varying periods during the 1840s, and at least seven in each of the following two decades, although not all at the same time. This article examines the character of mid-nineteenth century shop-front natural history enterprise and considers its significance for the inhabitants of Sydney and its visitors. -
