$400,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 95th Running – Saturday, May 4, 2019 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Track Record – 1:33.26, Fruit Ludt (2014) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.

  • Leonard S. Sutcliffe Photograph Albums 1925-1934
Archives & Manuscript Collections National Sporting Library Middleburg, VA Leonard S. Sutcliffe Photograph Albums 1925-1934 Name: Sutcliffe, Leonard Stansfield (1880-1937) MC0003 Materials: Photograph albums Dates: 1923-1934 Volume: 1 cubic foot (Document boxes 1-3) Donation: Unknown donation, 1985 Usage: Unless otherwise stated by NSL staff, these records are open for research without restrictions. Biographical Note Leonard Stansfield Sutcliffe was a successful horse photographer based out of Lexington, Kentucky in the early part of the 20th century. He was born in Birkenhead, England on April 15, 1880, and was educated in Yorkshire. Sutcliffe came to North America in 1907, serving as a lieutenant in the Governor General’s Footguards of Canada. Driven south by the Canadian climate, he settled first in the Carolinas, but then relocated to Lexington, Kentucky. Beginning only as an amateur photographer, Sutcliffe quickly demonstrated a natural skill at capturing the most flattering images of horses; by the early 1920s he was recognized as one of the most talented turf photographers of his day. The noted English racing photographer F. H. Rouch visited Lexington in 1922 and remarked that his presence there to photograph famous horses was unnecessary, as Sutcliffe was already there. During his career Sutcliffe created several landmark works which still stand today as milestones in the horse photography world. Around 1929 he produced a series of five albums chronicling American thoroughbred sires and mares, still considered to be masterpieces. His photographs were used in several publications like studbooks and The Thoroughbred Record. Sutcliffe’s most famous contributions to the field were his celebrated photographs of Man o’War, thought by many to be the best pictures ever taken of the famed winner.

  • Redskin and Cowboy a Tale of the Western Plains
REDSKIN AND COWBOY A TALE OF THE WESTERN PLAINS BY G. A. HENTY 2 PREFACE My dear Lads, There are but few words of preface needed to a story that is not historical. The principal part of the tale is laid among the cowboys of the Western States of America, a body of men unrivalled in point of hardihood and devotion to work, as well as in reckless courage and wild daring. Texas, which twenty-five years ago was the great ranching state, is no longer the home of the typical cowboy, but he still exists and flourishes in New Mexico and the northern States and Territories. The picture I have given of their life can be relied upon, and its adventures and dangers are in no degree coloured, as I have taken them from the lips of a near relative of my own who was for some years working as a cowboy in New Mexico. He was an actor in many of the scenes described, and so far from my having heightened or embellished them, I may say that I have given but a small proportion of the perilous adventures through which he went, for had I given them in full it would, I am sure, have seemed to you that the story was too improbable to be true. In treating of cowboy life, indeed, it may well be said that truth is stranger than fiction. Yours sincerely, G. A. HENTY ©Ichthus Academy Redskin and Cowboy 3 CONTENTS I.
