September 2019 | Jeish Community News 3 Director of Development Message - Sarah Barnett The Power of…Partnership. Hula at the Poola extended the connection between Lior and Sasha. Lior was one of our Israeli counselors this summer, and Sasha was one of our campers. Without your help and the assistance of the Belle S. Frank Philanthropic Fund, we would not be able to continue our crucial Shaliach program. Our partnership with The Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and The Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) allow this yearly Shaliach partnership to flourish. So many of our children begin their bond with Israel through this program. Lior and her Shacliach partner, Jonathan, provided daily Israel education for our campers, but it was their daily warmth and instant connection with our campers that truly made the difference. True love developed on both sides. But it doesn’t stop with our kids because Lior and Jonathan touched the lives of so many including their host families. For evidence of this enjoy this memory from Early Childhood parent, Melissa Diamond, who originally posted her thoughts on her Facebook page.

Caroline’s preschool brings two camp counselors over from Israel every summer to teach the children about life in Israel. Each week they stay with a different family. At first when her school asked Brian and I to house them I thought that it would be exciting. But, then the closer it got the more vulnerable and anxious I felt about the unknown of welcoming strangers into our home.

You know life with two working parents, a toddler, 2 dogs and a cat isn’t always smooth sailing. I worried what they would think of our sometimes hectic life. I wondered what they would think of our home, our parenting style, would we have anything in common? Would they eat the food we prepared? Despite my efforts to plan and prepare, would they be comfortable?

What I actually should have been worried about was how hard it would be to say goodbye to these “strangers” who, in one short week turned into great friends.

This week with Yehonatan Kuperberg and Lior Givati has been filled with laughter, card games, homemade pizza, introducing them to some of our favorite American movies and TV shows, music, a great concert and great conversation. They have been helpful with Caroline, have helped with meals and helped wear the dogs out. In every new experience we shared with them they were open, excited and present for every moment of it all.

This week has given me so much, most importantly amazing new friends. We just dropped them off and will be with a new family tonight and we already miss them so much! #imnotcryingyourecrying

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? ( Mr. Rogers Documentary) Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 12:30-2:30pm Buffet Lunch

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, from filmmaker Morgan Neville (the Oscar-winning 20 Feet from Stardom) takes an intimate look at America’s favorite neighbor: Fred Rogers. The documentary tells the story of a soft-spoken minister, puppeteer, writer and producer whose show was beamed daily into homes across America for more than 30 years. In his beloved television program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Rogers and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues in a simple, direct fashion. There hadn’t been anything like Mr. Rogers on television before, and there hasn’t been since.

The Flicker of Old Dreams is a story about the tension between those who fear and those who desire change; the beauty and grit of a town in its last gasp for life; the universal cry for dignity; and the revived hearts of a pair of outsiders who decide to break from tradition and dream bigger lives.

Rosh Hashanah It is a longtime Jewish tradition for Jews to immerse in the mikveh before the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. As we begin the process of t’shuvah (return, repentance) we invite you to ask: What does the spirit of Rosh Hashanah look like to you? What are you ready to let go of from this past year? What are you bringing with you in to the New Year? Perhaps you’ll find these answers in the warm waters of the mikveh. Shed your struggles, turn to forgiveness, and emerge from the living waters with an open heart for the new year ahead. Kavanah (intention to be read when preparing for immersion) Water is God’s gift to living souls, to clear us, to purify us, to sustain us and renew us. As I immerse myself in mayim hayyim, living waters, I begin a new cycle in my life. May my entry into the waters of the mikveh mark the beginning of the journey that lays ahead. T’vilah (to be read at the mikveh’s edge before entering the water) May I begin this year fresh and open to the possibility of transformation. We hope to build a universal mikveh space for all (orthodox, conservative, reform, reconstructionist, or unaffiliated) where you can bring your whole selves – your joys, your losses, your sorrows – into the living waters of the mikveh. Please support a mikveh for ALL at the UJCVP Naming opportunities available for dedication to honor the memory of a loved one. Steering Committee: Gary Kavit * Meryl Kessler * Scott Wolf * Kayren Segall
