' Obviously Servius is drawing a distinction between the Saturnian and other metres, as well as between the ordinary man and the man of letters. The unlettered compose their verses in the Saturnian metre, which is founded on rhythmus alone; the literary circles write theirs on some other basis. L. Havet, De Saturnio Latinorum Versu (i88o), was convinced that in rhythmum Servius does not refer to accent. He writes (p. 358): 'Ad rhythmumsolum Servius certissime non eo sensu scripsit, quem plerique admittunt, id est ad accentum solum. Nam numquam ita veteres loquuntur de accentu, ut cum rhythmo commune quicquam habeat. neque hic Servius sollemnis inter rhythmumet metrumdistinctionis meminit, qui de metroad rhythmumcomposito loquitur. Ea verba nos sic intellegimus: ad arsin solam, ita ut syllabae in arsi positae nihil referat utrum productae sint an correptae.' If Havet's conviction that no reference is intended to accent is based on the usage of the 'ancients', one is permitted to inquire whether his own interpretation is supported by the ancients. Certainly no such conclusion is to be drawn from Servius' own use of the word rhythmus,which occurs in four other places,' as follows: (i) On Ecl. v. 14 (modulans alterna) : 'secundum rhythmum componens. "Alterna" autem varia, propter musicam, cuius sonus varius invenitur ex pedum dis- similitudine.' (2) On Ecl. ix. 45 (numeros memini): 'metra [vel add. schol. Daniel.] rhythmos [vel certenumeros versuum add. schol. Daniel.].' (3) On Aen. vi. 646 (obloquiturnumeris septem discrimina vocum): ' "numeris" rhythmis, sonis, ut " numeros memini, si verba tenerem ".' (4) On Aen. ix. 776 (numerosqueintendere nervis): 'rhythmos facere intentione nervorum; nam numeri sunt rhythmi, ut "numeros memini, si verba tenerem ". Hoc ergo dicit: secundum chordas verba componebat.' The use of rhythmi here is rather fluctuating and uncertain. In (3) it is equated with soni; in (2), unless the longer version is correct, it is a parallel to metra; in (4) it is synonymous with the vague numeri; while in (i), in a phrase reminiscent of the one under discussion, it embraces the notion of variety in poetical feet.     Maecenas and Petronius’ Trimalchio Maecenatianus SHANNON N. BYRNE Xavier University This paper examines Petronius’ use of Maecenas as a model for specific behaviors and traits that Trimalchio exhibits throughout the Cena. At first glance Seneca’s distinct portrait of an effeminate Maecenas ruined by his own good fortune seems to have informed Petronius’ characterization of Trimalchio. I have argued elsewhere that the target of Seneca’s intense criti- cism of Maecenas was not Augustus’ long-dead minister, but rather a con- temporary who had replaced Seneca in influence at court; someone whose character and tastes were wanton compared to Seneca’s; someone who en- couraged Nero’s less savory tendencies instead of keeping them hidden or in check as Seneca and Burrus had tried to do; someone who resembled Mae- cenas in character and literary enthusiasm; in short, someone very much like Petronius himself. Petronius understood the implications in Seneca’s attacks on Maecenas, and as if to stamp approval on the fact that he and Maecenas were indeed alike in many ways, Petronius took pleasure in endowing his decadent freedman with the very qualities that Seneca meant to be demean- ing.1 Although my focus is on Maecenas, it is obvious that Petronius spared no effort in rounding out Trimalchio and all the freedmen at the banquet with mannerisms and conduct that would recall memorable literary characters in works from Plato’s Symposium to Horace’s Cena Nasidiensi and beyond.2 ————— 1 For a discussion regarding Seneca’s attacks on Maecenas and the argument that Petronius was their intended victim, see Byrne 2006, 83–111.

BECKER u Abstract. This essay explores the metrical as well as rhythmical aspects of the acoustic contour of the Latin Alcaic, focusing on patterns of natural, audible, performed word accents in coincidence and syncopation with the fixed pattern of the meter, in both the ancient and modern scansions of the stanza. The meter was measured in antiquity with a learned, latent expectation or undercurrent of regular verse beats to scan aloud, to measure for the ear, the pattern of long and short syllables. Within the fixed framework of the meter, variable patterns of accent provide a rhythm, and that rhythm is the focus of this essay. Very little attention falls on sound and sense: the coda argues that sound need not be sub- ordinate to meaning, need not be sound effect, nor explicitly rhetorical, to be worth our attention. By accentuating weight and pause, Horace points up a principal beauty of the Alcaic, its shifts in rhythm in midcourse, its calculated imbalance as the iambic and choriambic first two lines yield to iambs in the third and resolve in racy dactyls in the fourth.

I begin with a lexicon of sites and terms related to Roman concepts of disgust in the city, as they appear in the satiric sources I am working with. Then, in my next four chapters, I work chronologically through the extant satires to show how each author reflects or even appropriates practices from Roman street culture. Satirists both condemn parts of the city as disgusting—the parts and people in them who ignore social and cultural boundaries—and appropriate those practices as emblematic of what satire does. The theoretical framework for this project concerns concepts of disgust in the Roman world, and draws primarily on Mary Douglas (1966) and Julia Kristeva (1982). The significance of this work is twofold: (1) it argues that satire is, far from a self-contained elite practice, a genre that drew heavily on non-elite urban ii culture; (2) that it adds to a fragmentary history of Roman street culture. The introduction and lexicon establish a vocabulary and framework for examining the history of street culture, and the city in Roman satire.
