BID-20-09-2020 Annual Report.Indd OF TRANSFORMATION 2020 ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR: JULY 1, 2019 – JUNE 20, 2020 DOWNTOWN MOBILE ALLIANCE • DOWNTOWN MOBILE DISTRICT MANAGEMENT CORPORATION • MAIN STREET MOBILE LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT It is interesting that we began this journey in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This 2005 tropical storm did significant damage in downtown, especially from storm surge and high winds. The cleanup went on for weeks. Suffice it to say the BID Services Team was not the well-oiled machine that it is now. They did not even have trucks and equipment. Such things had to be rented as we were just beginning to set up the program when the storm hit. This year’s annual report celebrates not only FY 2019-20, but the last 15 years of the Business Improvement District. You will see that millions of pounds of trash and leaves have been removed, hundreds of thousands of flowers have been planted, and 10,000 motorists assisted. You will also see a commitment to telling the story of downtown’s growth day-by-day in the highest quality manner resources will allow. You will see a commitment to education and planning. This has included providing funding and leadership for the New Plan for Mobile and the form based zoning code for downtown called the Downtown Development District. You will see a spirit of initiative that grasps opportunities to improve downtown through legislative acts. This is evidenced WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES! in the go-cup zone allowed by the Entertainment District This time last year we were bullish on the opportunities of legislation, the Sidewalk Café bill, the Brunch Bill, and the life- 2020. To say that 2020 has been of economic strength and life-affirming wonderment. We are humbling would be an understatement. grateful to you, our members and supporters, for the monetary and emotional support you provide us. Together we will survive What to do when faced with a rapidly evolving, blessedly rare this moment. situation? Huddle. We made the decision to do everything we could to keep downtown front of mind for our customers. The Elizabeth P. Stevens BID team doubled down on being custodians of the streets and President & CEO sidewalks. The office staff kept working—at first from home and then back in the office. We focused on short term triage while keeping an eye on the long term development of downtown. Under confusing and ever changing circumstances, your Downtown Mobile Alliance team did not miss a beat. BY THE NUMBERS 1 4 WHY WE DO IT M I S S I O N 1 5 FROM THE DIRECTOR I continue to count my blessings as I reflect on this, my 4th year as Director of the Mobile Museum of Art. In the past four years, our art museum has undergone a transformation—thanks to the efforts of countless volunteers, supporters, government entities, and the ongoing efforts of our talented staff. 2017 was designated as the first in a three-year commemoration of our state’s Bicentennial—officially launched in Mobile in May of 2017! This happy occasion afforded us the perfect opportunity to celebrate our state’s art and artists. We quickly concluded that our first Alabama Bicentennial exhibition must obviously be a celebration of William Christenberry’s work, which we titled CHRISTENBERRY: In Alabama. His lifelong love of his native state, and our state’s enduring admiration for him and his legacy as demonstrated through the rich Christenberry collections in Alabama’s museums, provided the focus of this first Bicentennial celebration. Generously underwritten by the Crampton Trust, established by Katharine Crampton Cochrane, and bolstered by additional funding from the City of Mobile and the Alabama State Council on the Arts—we mounted a joyous exhibition celebrating Bill Christenberry, the Christenberry family’s creative lineage—restricting that project to works loaned by Alabama’s own institutions, and the Christenberry family.
