Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work.

SCALE-DEPENDENT VARIATION IN MOLECULAR AND ECOLOGICAL PATTERNS OF INFECTION FOR ENDOHELMINTHS FROM CENTRARCHID FISHES BY KYLE E. LUTH A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY GRADAUTE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Biology May 2016 Winston-Salem, North Carolina Approved By: Gerald W. Esch, Ph.D., Advisor Michael V. K. Sukhdeo, Ph.D., Chair T. Michael Anderson, Ph.D. Herman E. Eure, Ph.D. Erik C. Johnson, Ph.D. Clifford W. Zeyl, Ph.D. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I would like to thank my PI, Dr. Gerald Esch, for all of the insight, all of the discussions, all of the critiques (not criticisms) of my works, and for the rides to campus when the North Carolina weather decided to drop rain on my stubborn head. The numerous lively debates, exchanges of ideas, voicing of opinions (whether solicited or not), and unerring support, even in the face of my somewhat atypical balance of service work and dissertation work, will not soon be forgotten. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the former Master, and now Doctor, Michael Zimmermann; friend, lab mate, and collecting trip shotgun rider extraordinaire. Although his need of SPF 100 sunscreen often put our collecting trips over budget, I could not have asked for a more enjoyable, easy-going, and hard-working person to spend nearly 2 months and 25,000 miles of fishing filled days and raccoon, gnat, and entrail-filled nights. You are a welcome camping guest any time, especially if you do as good of a job attracting scorpions and ants to yourself (and away from me) as you did on our trips.

  • Miocene Cladocera from Poland Henri J
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Miocene cladocera from Poland Henri J. Dumont1, Agnieszka Pociecha2*, Edyta Zawisza3, Krystyna Szeroczyńska3, Elżbieta Worobiec4 & Grzegorz Worobiec4 The Bełchatów Lignite Mine of Poland is a treasure-cove for mid-to late Miocene plant and animal fossils, deposited in a slow-fowing river valley with swamps and oxbow lakes. Here, we report the fnding of abundant fossil anomopod cladocerans. Some are three-dimensionally preserved, including the taxonomically important trunk limbs. They pertain to the families Chydoridae and Bosminidae, with species similar to but distinct from modern ones. All are members of the zooplankton, though some are littoral while others are pelagic in nature. Morphological stasis in these families is not outspoken as in the Daphniidae and the stasis hypothesis, based on ephippia only, is challenged. The absence of Daphnia is conspicuous and ascribed to a combination of fsh predation and local water chemistry. Its place in the oxbow lakes is taken by at least two Bosmina species, one of which is undescribed. We consider this a case of paleo-competitive release. For Bosminidae, these are the frst certifed fossils predating the Pleistocene. Te lignite mine at Bełchatów, Central Poland (Fig. 1), has recently yielded abundant Miocene remains of several species of branchiopod microcrustaceans. Tey pertain to the order Anomopoda or water feas, families Chydori- dae and Bosminidae. Te main synapomorphy of the anomopods is the ephippium, a structure in which sexual or resting eggs are deposited and that forms when external conditions deteriorate. Te Daphniidae include the well-known and speciose genus Daphnia, a highly specialized pelagic component of the freshwater zooplankton.

Bulletin of the Transilvania University of Braşov Series II: Forestry • Wood Industry • Agricultural Food Engineering • Vol. 9 (58) No.1 - 2016 IMPACT OF CLEARCUTTING ON GROUND BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: CARABIDAE) IN A NORWAY SPRUCE FOREST Jozef MACKO1 Abstract: The research was conducted in Veľká Fatra Mountains, Slovakia. Pitfall traps were installed in the forest and in the glade. Overall, 20 species of beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) were recorded. In the forest, 1532 individuals belonging to 13 species were recorded. Trechus pulpani had the highest abundance in the forest and represents almost half of all individuals. Paradoxically, on the glade, the numbers of species slightly increased, but their abundance was significantly lower. We recorded only 143 individuals belonging to 16 species. Of the forest species, only Carabus violaceus and Pterostichus unctulatus retained a dominant position, but their abundance has decreased by more than 70%. Key words: Carabidae, clear cut, seasonal dynamics. 1. Introduction ground layer from sunlight and, to some extent, from microclimatic alterations and Clear-cutting represents the method of changes in the bottom- and field-layer wood logging in which most of the wood is vegetation. However, the sheltering removed and taken away. Removing the efficiency depends on the number of trees wood causes the decline of microclimate retained, as indicated by the relationship conditions, significant damages of the between generalist Carabid and tree herbaceous cover, and also destructs the density [11]. Many of the environmental surface of soil in which the beetles live and factors are multifaceted and interlinked in hide [3]. The forest stands are defining the overall structural complexity characterized by a relatively high and of insect habitats [13], [18], [15].

Checklist of the Spheciform Wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae & Sphecidae) of British Columbia Chris Ratzlaff Spencer Entomological Collection, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC, Vancouver, BC This checklist is a modified version of: Ratzlaff, C.R. 2015. Checklist of the spheciform wasps (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae & Sphecidae) of British Columbia. Journal of the Entomological Society of British Columbia 112:19-46 (available at http://journal.entsocbc.ca/index.php/journal/article/view/894/951). Photographs for almost all species are online in the Spencer Entomological Collection gallery (http://www.biodiversity.ubc.ca/entomology/). There are nine subfamilies of spheciform wasps in recorded from British Columbia, represented by 64 genera and 280 species. The majority of these are Crabronidae, with 241 species in 55 genera and five subfamilies. Sphecidae is represented by four subfamilies, with 39 species in nine genera. The following descriptions are general summaries for each of the subfamilies and include nesting habits and provisioning information. The Subfamilies of Crabronidae Astatinae !Three genera and 16 species of astatine wasps are found in British Columbia. All species of Astata, Diploplectron, and Dryudella are groundnesting and provision their nests with heteropterans (Bohart and Menke 1976). Males of Astata and Dryudella possess holoptic eyes and are often seen perching on sticks or rocks. Bembicinae Nineteen genera and 47 species of bembicine wasps are found in British Columbia. All species are groundnesting and most prefer habitats with sand or sandy soil, hence the common name of “sand wasps”. Four genera, Bembix, Microbembex, Steniolia and Stictiella, have been recorded nesting in aggregations (Bohart and Horning, Jr. 1971; Bohart and Gillaspy 1985).

September 1992 A review of Eremiasphecium Kohl, 1897 (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) Wojciech J. Pulawski Abstract Diagnostic and other taxonomically important characters of Eremiasphecium are discussed. Taukumia KAZENAS, 1991, is synonymized with Eremiasphecium KOHL, 1897. A new species, Eremiasphecium arabicum sp. nov., is descnbed from El Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Eremiasphecium digitatum (GUSSAKOVSKU, 1930), previously known from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, is first recorded from Mauritania, and Eremiasphecium schmiedeknechüi, KOHL, 1897, first recorded from the Arabian Peninsula. A catalog of all described species is provided with füll bibliographic and distributional records. Introduction Eremiasphecium is a little known genus that occurs in hot, dry areas from Mauritania and Canary Islands to Mongolia. Specimens are rarely collected, recognition features are not well known, and the original description has been ignored. As a result, four generic names were proposed for the eight species recognized so far. Relationships of Eremiasphecium to other Sphecidae are still controversial because of an unusual combination of characters (BOHART and MENKE, 1976; ALEXANDER, 1990, 1992a, b). Because of scarcity of available 397 © Entomofauna Ansfelden/Austria; download unter www.biologiezentrum.at material, ALEXANDER (1992b) assigned some character states to the whole genus, whereas in fact they are found only in some but not all species.

TIME FOR SHIFT CHANGE IN THE FABRIC OF EXISTENCE Exploring the role of darkness and artificial light for humans and biodiversity Author: Maya Strömgren Supervisor: Mattias Sandberg Master’s thesis in Geography with major in Human Geography Spring semester 2021 Department of Economy and Society Unit for Human Geography School of Business, Economics and Law at University of Gothenburg Student essay: 30 hec Course: GEO230 Level: Master Semester/year: Spring 2021 Supervisor: Mattias Sandberg Examiner: Jerry Olsson Key words: Darkness, artificial light, light pollution, biodiversity, human- non-human relations, all-ecology, non-representational theory. Abstract This thesis departs from the loss of biodiversity due to artificial light at night. The diurnal human has taken over all hours of the day instead of the natural light once, meaning that space and time have become limited for the nocturnal living species. Earlier research concern how darkness and artificial light affect either animals, insects, and plants, or humans’ health. The combination of the two, however, remains largely unresearched. Therefore, this geographical thesis dives into this gap by exploring humans and biodiversity in relation to darkness and artificial light. Building on that exploration, the aim was further to formulate generative ways forward in the matter. A qualitative method was conducted, consisting of a self-written Darkness Diary and walking interviews with a moth-expert, a bat expert, and a light designer and light artist. The theory of all-ecology was applied as an ontological stand and a geographical toolbox. Non- representational theory (NRT) was further applied as a guide in the exploration of experience.

The European Museums. Indian checklist is also updated for 2006. The South Asian While the Indian checklist (Siliwal et al., 2005) is more spider list is also compiled following The World Spider Catalog accurate, the South Asian spider checklist is not critically by Platnick and other peer-reviewed publications since the last scrutinized due to lack of complete literature, but it gives an update. In total, 2299 species of spiders in 67 families have overview of species found in various South Asian countries, been reported from South Asia. There are 39 species included in this regions checklist that are not listed in the World Catalog gives the endemism of species and forms a basis for careful of Spiders. Taxonomic verification is recommended for 51 species. and participatory work by arachnologists in the region.
