In putting together this residency I became $25; Member $20; 30 and obsessed with the oddly satisfying timbre that comes from pairing a relatively dark, mid­range instrument: Under (with I.D.) $18 the viola, with bass viols — early, fretted baroque instruments that play quite a bit lower, but sound a whole ton brighter. It’s a weird, beautiful thing that’ll be explored deeply in the Dennehy world premiere on the 5th. This concert I am thinking of as a kind of study for that show. We’ll be playing old music by Byrd and Gibbons and Picforth and new music by Nico Muhly and David Lang and everything is SO GORGEOUS. Nadia's podcast, Meet the Composer from Q2 Music, explores the work of living composers through her interviews and musical selections. She was awarded the 2010 ASCAP Deems Taylor Award in Radio and Internet Broadcasting for her previous show on Q2 Music. Nadia is a member of yMusic, Alarm Will Sound, and ACME (the American Contemporary Music Ensemble), and has lent her sound to recording and concert projects by such artists as Grizzly Bear, Jónsi, and Arcade Fire. As a chamber musician, Nadia has collaborated with such artists as Joseph Kalichstein, Itzhak Perlman, and the Silk Road Ensemble, as well as with members of Kronos Quaret, the Chiara Quartet, and the Peabody Trio. Nadia is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. Liam Byrne has been praised in The Times for his “nuanced and expressive, stylish virtuosity” and by The Guardian for his “glittering performance.” Liam’s solo viol work regularly explores lesser known corners of 16th and 17th century repertoire as well as the compositions of living composers. He has had new solo works written for him by Edmund Finnis, Nico Muhly, Valgeir Sigurðsson, and others. For several years, Liam was a member of the renowned viol consort Fretwork. He has also performed and recorded with the Dunedin Consort, The Sixteen, Le Concert d’Astrée, i Fagiolini, Concerto Caledonia, and the viol consorts Phantasm and Concordia, among many others. Liam has worked with a wide variety of non­classical artists including Damon Albarn, Nils Frahm, Martin Parker, and Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond). He played a musical role in the creation of several large­scale operatic works: Damon Albarn’s Dr. Dee (2011­12), Shara Worden’s You Us We All (2013), and Valgeir Sigurðsson’s Wide Slumber (2014). Liam received his BMus and Performer’s Diploma from Indiana University and his MPhil in Musicology and Performance from Magdalen College Oxford.     18|19 COMMISSIONS PROJECT Carnegie Hall’s commitment to the music of tomorrow continues with the fourth year of its five-year project during which at least 125 new works will be commissioned from today’s leading composers. Through the 125 Commissions Project, Carnegie Hall expands upon its history as the preeminent venue where music history is made. Launched during the Hall’s 125th anniversary season in 2015, the project features new solo, chamber, and orchestral music from both established and emerging composers, including John Adams, Thomas Adès, Timo Andres, Donnacha Dennehy, Bryce Dessner, Philip Glass, Sofia Gubaidulina, Brad Mehldau, Nico Muhly, Steve Reich, Frederic Rzewski, Caroline Shaw, Tyshawn Sorey, Chris Thile, and Jörg Widmann. As part of the project, Carnegie Hall has sought to partner with co-commissioners as much as possible in order to maximize the number of performances for new each work.     The PlayerPlayer:: Nico Muhly By Adam Baer Last spring at the New York concert space The Kitchen, the energetic, always adventurous composer Nico Muhly performed what may have been a first: a work that involved “playing” human hair. Well, not literally. As violist Nadia Sirota, one of several collaborators on stage, bowed the notes, Muhly imitatively stroked and plucked the long red tresses of three women lying above him on slabs. The playful bit of performance art drew chuckles from the admiring crowd, which included Björk and artist Matthew Barney, who had come no doubt expecting some theater. The concert—played on a stage set of bones, skulls, and webs of braided rope created by the Icelandic artist Shoplifter—was classic Muhly, straddling the line between campy and brilliant, between unabashedly affected and profoundly beautiful. At just 27, Muhly is a rare specimen in the music world: Classically trained yet fearless and rangy, he’s embraced by the establishment but perpetually pursuing experimental work. Muhly’s current projects He accomplished all of this—and more— include composing a new work for the while working for Philip Glass (a Metropolitan Opera (unheard of for someone multifaceted job he started as a joint under 30) and a score for a Scott Rudin- Columbia-Juilliard student) and maintaining produced Hollywood film. The Garden of Iniquitous Creatures was commissioned by De Doelen Rotterdam for Eighth Blackbird. By-By Huey and Checkered Shade are part of Hand Eye, commissioned by the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation for the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival and by Carnegie Hall.
