Song Exploder Laura Marling - Song For Our Daughter Episode 184 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. (“Song for Our Daughter” by LAURA MARLING) Hrishikesh: Before we start, I want to mention that, in this episode, there’s some discussions of themes that might be difficult for some: sexual harassment and assault, as well as a mention of rape and suicide. Please use your best discretion. Laura Marling is a singer and songwriter from London. She won the Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist - she’s been nominated five times for that, along with the Mercury Prize, and the Grammy for Best Folk Album. Since 2008, she’s released seven albums. The most recent is called Song for Our Daughter. It’s also the name of the song that she takes apart in this episode. I spoke to Laura while she was in her home studio in London. (“Song for Our Daughter” by LAURA MARLING) Laura: My name is Laura Marling. (Music fades out) Laura: This is the longest I've ever taken to write a record. You know, I started very young. I put out my first album when I was 17, and I'm now 30. When I was young, in a really wonderful way, and I think everybody experiences this when they're young, you're kind of a functioning narcissist [laughter], in that you have this experience of the world, in which you are the central character.

Volume I These days, labels such as classical, rock and pop mean less and less since young musicians frequently blur boundaries between genres. These young musicians have built an alternative musical universe. I construct five different categories to explore this universe. They are 1) circuits of alternate concert venues, 2) cross-genre collaborations, 3) alternative modes of musical groups, 4) new compositional trends in classical chamber music, and 5) new ensembles and record labels. ii In this dissertation, I aim to explore these five categories, connecting them to recent cultural trends in New York.

  • Nico Muhly by Adam Baer
The PlayerPlayer:: Nico Muhly By Adam Baer Last spring at the New York concert space The Kitchen, the energetic, always adventurous composer Nico Muhly performed what may have been a first: a work that involved “playing” human hair. Well, not literally. As violist Nadia Sirota, one of several collaborators on stage, bowed the notes, Muhly imitatively stroked and plucked the long red tresses of three women lying above him on slabs. The playful bit of performance art drew chuckles from the admiring crowd, which included Björk and artist Matthew Barney, who had come no doubt expecting some theater. The concert—played on a stage set of bones, skulls, and webs of braided rope created by the Icelandic artist Shoplifter—was classic Muhly, straddling the line between campy and brilliant, between unabashedly affected and profoundly beautiful. At just 27, Muhly is a rare specimen in the music world: Classically trained yet fearless and rangy, he’s embraced by the establishment but perpetually pursuing experimental work. Muhly’s current projects He accomplished all of this—and more— include composing a new work for the while working for Philip Glass (a Metropolitan Opera (unheard of for someone multifaceted job he started as a joint under 30) and a score for a Scott Rudin- Columbia-Juilliard student) and maintaining produced Hollywood film. Last year he wrote a performance schedule that has put him on a piece for the Paris Opera Ballet and a such varied stages as London’s Royal soundtrack for Isaac Mizrahi’s New York Academy of Music, Symphony Hall in Fashion Week runway show.
