Prince George's County, Maryland County Executive Baker Honors Junior Athletic Champions of Prince George’s County

Baker to honor Francis Tiafoe, winner of 2013 Orange Bowl International Championship, and Prince George’s Storm, winner of American Youth Football National Championship

Upper Marlboro, MD – On Tuesday, March 18, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III will honor several incredible Prince George’s County youth for their national athletic achievements. At 10:00 AM, the Prince George’s Storm, winners of the American Youth Football Junior PeeWee Division 1 will join the County Executive for an awards ceremony and at 11:00 AM, County Executive Baker will present a Proclamation to Riverdale Park native Francis Tiafoe for winning the 2013 Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship.

“From Sugar Ray Leonard to Kevin Durant, so many of this country’s greatest athletes are from Prince George’s County,” said Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III. “I am pleased that this tradition is continuing with these talented athletes who are among the best in the county and the world. We must support our student athletes by encouraging them and celebrating their achievements.”

As one of the longest-running independent youth organizations in the State of Maryland, the Prince George's Storm has been in existence since 2002 with the help of a dynamic team of servant leaders, parent participation, and community support. On December 13, the Prince George’s Storm earned their national championship in Orlando, FL with a 33-0 victory against Highland Park from Arizona. Tiafoe, who trains at the Champions Center (JTCC) in College Park, MD, took top honors at the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship in Miami, FL, which serves as the end of year world championship in junior tennis. At 15 years old, Tiafoe made history by becoming the youngest winner ever of the boys 18-and-under title in the international contest’s 67-year history.
