"We Are the Revolutionaries": Visibility, Protest, and Racial Formation in 1970s Prison Radicalism Abstract This dissertation analyzes black and Puerto Rican prison protest in the 1970s. I argue that prisoners elucidated a nationalist philosophy of racial formation that saw racism as a site of confinement but acialr identity as a vehicle for emancipation. Trying to force the country to see its sites of punishment as discriminatory locations of repression, prisoners used spectacular confrontation to dramatize their conditions of confinement as epitomizing American inequality. I investigate this radicalism as an effort to secure visibility, understood here as a metric of collective consciousness. In documenting the ways prisoners were symbols and spokespeople of 1970s racial protest, this dissertation argues that the prison served as metaphor and metonym in the process of racial formation. A concept and an institution, the prison was embodied in protest, hidden in punishment, represented in media, and known in ideas. This dissertation examines the multifaceted mechanisms by which social movements attempt to effect change through creating new ways of knowing. I examine prison visibility through two extended case studies. First, I study a coterie of radical black prisoners centered in California and revolving around militant prisoner author George Jackson. Through appeals to revolutionary action as racial authenticity, this grouping—which included Angela Davis, Ruchell Magee, and the San Quentin 6, as well as the Black Panther Party and others—described black prisoners as slaves rebelling against the confinement of American society writ large. The second case study addresses the successful decade-long campaign to free five Puerto Rican Nationalists imprisoned for spectacular attacks on U.S. authority in the 1950s. Understanding colonialism as a prison, U.S.-based Puerto Rican nationalists in the 1970s (including the Young Lords, the Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional, the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional and others) defined the freedom of these prisoners as a necessary step toward national independence. Through strategies of visibility, black and Puerto Rican prison radicals used collective memory to overcome the spatial barriers of confinement. Such memories were recalled through a wide range of tactics, from bombs to bombast, from alternative media to community organizing, as prison radicals fought to control the terms of their visibility. Horton Doctor of Philosophy in Education and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Na’ilah Nasir, Chair This dissertation is an intervention into Critical Whiteness Studies, an ‘additional movement’ to Ethnic Studies and Critical Race Theory. It systematically analyzes key contradictions in working against racism from a white subject positions under post-Civil Rights Movement liberal color-blind white hegemony and "Black Power" counter-hegemony through a critical assessment of two major competing projects in theory and practice: white anti-racism [Part 1] and New Abolitionism [Part 2]. I argue that while white anti-racism is eminently practical, its efforts to hegemonically rearticulate white are overly optimistic, tend toward renaturalizing whiteness, and are problematically dependent on collaboration with people of color. I further argue that while New Abolitionism has popularized and advanced an alternative approach to whiteness which understands whiteness as ‘nothing but oppressive and false’ and seeks to ‘abolish the white race’, its ultimately class-centered conceptualization of race and idealization of militant nonconformity has failed to realize effective practice.

In the 1910s-20s, the city experienced substantial black immigration but became in the process the most residentially segregated of all major US cities. During the civil rights struggles of the 1960s, long-simmering frustration and anger led many lower-class blacks to the culturally attractive, militant Black Panther Party. Thus, long before Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition, made famous in the 1980s, or Barack Obama's historic presidential campaigns more recently, the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party (ILPBB) laid much of the groundwork for nontraditional grassroots political activism. The principal architect was a charismatic, marginally educated 20-year-old named Fred Hampton, tragically and brutally murdered by the Chicago police in December 1969 as part of an FBI- backed counter-intelligence program against what it considered subversive political groups. Among other things, Williams (Kentucky) "demonstrates how the ILPBB's community organizing methods and revolutionary self-defense ideology significantly influenced Chicago's machine politics, grassroots organizing, racial coalitions, and political behavior."     Biography Etheridge Knight was a man of mystery. According to Sanford Pinsker, “Knight is the kind of poet who gives poetry a good name.”1 Fran Quinn, a close friend of Knight’s said that Knight is “the kind of person that a lot of rumors are going to gather around.”2 One thing that is certain is the he managed to produce a body of work that is to this day considered some of the finest of American poetry. Etheridge Knight was born on April 19, 1931, in Corinth, Mississippi. He grew up in Paducah, Kentucky. Knight only attended school until he had finished the eight grade. It was during this period that his problems with drug and alcohol use began, although this was also when he was introduced to the art of toasting. Toasts are traditional oral forms of narratives, often focusing on “drugs, sex, illegal activities, and violence.” After he dropped out, he ended up joining the army in 1947. Knight saw active duty in Korea and served until he was discharged in 1951 after suffering a shrapnel wound.3 In 1960 he was arrested for what was officially called armed robbery.4 Knight had distracted a clerk at a convenience store and taken $12 out of the register. When the police picked him up a few blocks away, he was found to have a knife in his pocket. The whole incident had been caught on the store’s security camera, and despite never having drawn the weapon, Knight was convicted of armed robbery and made into an example by the judge; who sentenced him to one year in prison for each dollar taken.

It is dedicated to the Political Prisoners of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. In the same spirit of this journal, this issue will be the words of the political prisoners themselves, along with those in exile and former political prisoners. For many, it has been over three decades of imprisonment in the face of mountainous fi les of Counter-Intelligence Program operations (federal/state/local) and present “Criminal-Justice” intransigence in setting these black revolutionary servants of the people free. Several of these servants have already “died” in prison—needlessly. How many more? Let this Special Issue contribute to highlighting Criminal-Justice in the United States of America and renewing our passion in fi ghting for the freedom of the political prisoners and for the completion of the revolutionary project of creating new world humanities. The Journal of Prisoners on Prisons (JPP) has worked for 15 years to bring forth the voices of prisoners, and has done a political prisoners issue in the past with revolutionaries in Ireland. Their 15th anniversary issue (published by the University of Ottawa Press) will be dedicated to the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army.
