RESOURCES What is Stop Announcer (NSW)? This app is designed to help customers with vision impairment navigate public transport with confidence. It provides audio announcements as customers approach stops and then informs when the destination stop is next; giving the customer time to prepare to disembark and complete their journey. It was designed for Buses but it also works for trains within NSW. The app is available on Android devices only - download from the Google play store. Stop Announcer is a route guidance app, it will not plan your trip. It uses GPS to acquire your device’s location and announce your route, so it will not work well inside buildings. It will warn you at regular intervals when there is no GPS available; you can change the frequency of this warning or turn it off in the GPS Settings. See www.transportnsw.info/resources/documents/help/stop-announcer-train-instructions.pdf for full instructions about the device (including its use on trains).

Resources from Ageing Disability and Home Care at FACS Oral Care for People with Disability - Poor oral hygiene can create heart disease and behaviours of concern, and studies show that people with disability have more oral health problems than people without disability. Ensure the people you support have the best chance of good health by looking at ADHC’s Powerpoint presentation on “Oral Care for people with disability- a resource for disability support workers”. This shows ways of implementing oral health plans, even for those that find teeth brushing and other oral health care support difficult. Concerned about Your Son? The Sunday Telegraph partnered with mental health organisations like headspace, Lifeline and the NRL State of Mind program in 2015, and again in 2016 in Tamworth and Orange, to run forums to break the taboo surrounding youth suicide and mental ill-health. At the forums, clinical experts, parents and young people told their stories and local police, and were available to answer audience questions. Some tips on talking with your son: • Start a conversation while doing something such as driving, playing a computer game or fishing. • Raise concerns at a neutral time, not when you are angry or during an argument. • Set an example by talking about your own emotions. • Take him to visit the experts so he can speak with them Source: Sunday Telegraph, 5 June 2016.

My First Plan – NDIS Many people have questions and concerns about this so the NDIA has provided facts on exactly what “My First Plan” means. This is the first plan an NDIS participant will receive, the beginning of a lifelong involvement with the NDIS. This plan is about everything needed now. Some people get the support they need now, but others need more. It is important to ask for more supports if you need them and they are deemed reasonable and necessary. You will not simply be transitioned to the NDIS and given what you’re currently getting. You are in charge of the planning process. The first plan focuses on current need, and there is no limit to the number of short or long term goals you can include. See more at www.everyaustraliancounts.com.au/first-plan-explained . Welcome to SkillsLink2Work, a Carer’s Toolkit to match Skills to Employment This free resource will help you to identify the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained as a carer. From the checklists of easily recognised examples, you can select those that match the activities you do. The resource will then translate your skills, knowledge and experience into a personalised report of your work skills. You can then use the report for job applications and interviews or skills recognition when enrolling in training. The work skills, sometimes referred to as employability skills, used in this resource are from the Australian Government Core Skills for Work Framework. The 10 core skills are nationally recognised as relevant to all those undertaking work, not just those entering the workforce for the first time. You can use it when it suits you by saving the checklists and returning as often as you wish. This means you won’t lose your work if you only have a few minutes to spare or need to rush off. http://skillslink2work.com.au/start-here/ FUNDING / FINANCIAL MATTERS The Young Carer Bursary Programme What? Taxi Subsidies for People with Disability to increase 1 July 2016 From 1 July 2016, the Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme (TTSS) maximum subsidy will increase from $30 per trip to $60 per trip. New $60 docket books will be mailed to current TTSS customers in the coming weeks. People with disability have campaigned for years to increase the subsidy, which has sat at $30 since 1999 rather than indexed to the CPI. Wheelchair Accessible Taxi (WAT) drivers will also benefit with the WATDIS incentive payment increasing from $7.70 (ex GST) to $15 (ex GST) per ride. This payment will help improve WAT services for wheelchair users. If you have any questions about how the TTSS $60 maximum subsidy will work, call the TTSS information helpline on 1800 200 592 or email [email protected] . See www.transport.nsw.gov.au/customers/taxis/ttss for information, application forms, feedback regarding the TTSS.

JulEYE - July is the Month to help end Blindness Make a $1 difference by donating $1 for every year you have enjoyed good sight. Head to www.juleye.com.au to help the Eye Surgeons Foundation put an end to preventable blindness. Apparently 75% of Australians who are vision- impaired did not need to be, and the other 25% needed a cure. Watch for Kirk Pengilly’s (INXS) ad next month. A tip from their website: Staring at iPhones, iPads and other electronic devices upclose and for extended periods of time, increases the risk of developing short sightedness. You can decrease the chance of this by looking up from your screen every 10 minutes to focus on a distant point. And remember to blink to avoid your eyes from drying out! Get your eyes checked every 2 years – macular degeneration and glaucoma can be lessened if detected early. If you notice any change in vision, see your doctor, optometrist or opthalmologist immediately. Stop smoking (which makes you more susceptible to eye diseases). Maintain a healthy weight (to lessen the risk of diabetes which can lead to vision loss). Wear sunglasses with a UV filter to protect your eyes from damaging UV rays. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables (especially dark green and yellow). CONFERENCES, TRAINING, SEMINARS NDIS Provider Information Sessions – Chatswood, Parramatta What?
