Newsletter of D&R Greenway Land Trust, Inc. Volume 24, Number 1 GREENWAYS Spring 2015 Land Preservation Update

Since 1989, D&R Greenway has placed 268 properties, approximately 18,796 acres valued at $379,248,817, into permanent preservation, an area as big as 15,000 football fields! Mission Possible: D&R Greenway Inspires Conservation Ethic

The eloquence of contemporary writers such as and Edward O. Wilson owes much to Leopold’s fusion of science with poetry. A founder of the Wilderness Society, Leopold wrote, “the distinguishing marks of American culture include a certain vigorous individualism combined with an ability to organize.” The power of an individual to DO conservation is strengthened when joining with others. D&R Greenway’s mission is to preserve and take care of land. No one person can do it all alone, but if each of us does what we can, together we will accomplish even more. Individuals inspired to practice a conservation ethic create the D&R Greenway community.

mong the greatest joys of Apreserving land is observing the life that springs from its soil: monarch butterflies fluttering over a field of native flowers, warblers and Scarlet Tanagers singing overhead, farm animals grazing in open pastures. A very tangible joy, too, is experienced at places such as St. Michaels Farm Preserve where visitors who start as toddlers evolve into young walkers, teen campers and ultimately adult hikers. At the root of that growth is D&R Greenway Land Trust. “We’ve come so far in the first 25 years,” says D&R Greenway President and CEO Linda Mead. “Starting from a grassroots organization in 1989 with a vision to preserve entire stream Enjoying the unspoiled view at St. Michaels Farm Preserve. corridors, we now have programs with a national impact.” Growing native has permanently preserved more than corridors of preservation for birds, seed to restore New York landfills is 18,750 acres throughout central New plants and people. one example of broadening impact. D&R GREENWAY LAND TRUST NEWSLETTER ❧ SPRING 2015 11 2014 Partners in Preservation &R Greenway Land Trust thanks our Partners in Preservation for their investment in our work. D Land preservation is so much more than permanently protecting land from future development. These lands benefit all of us with clean water to drink, fresh air to breathe and nourishing, local foods to eat. In addition, green spaces in nature have a positive effect on health including reducing stress, lowering risks from asthma and lessening health disparities. Perhaps the most significant benefit of preserving the natural and agricultural landscapes surrounding our cities, towns and villages is that it strengthens these communities by providing, quite literally, “common ground”— a shared continuity of experience with the land that extends across the generations. We would particularly like to welcome first-time donors to our organization. We are also grateful to the families and individuals who have provided steady support for D&R Greenway’s work through the years (see page 6 for acknowledgment of our Steadfast Stewards). We are thankful for your unfailing generosity each and every day. To request a correction to this donor list, please call D&R Greenway at 609-924-4646. Johnson Education Center Added to Canon of Acclaimed Building Portraits reg Moore, a filmmaker with Greg Moore GProductions, has generously donated a painting of the Johnson Education Center to D&R Greenway. Painted by Marina Ahun, an artist who is licensed through the Princeton University Office of Communications, it takes the perspective of the circa 1900 barn from Meredith’s Garden. The painting includes children at play, a reminder that children are the beneficiaries of D&R Greenway preserved land. “I wanted to warm the heart with this painting,” says the Russian-born artist who trained at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to her portraits of buildings on the Princeton University Campus, Marina has applied her finely detailed style to the architecture of New York City. More of Marina’s architectural portraits can be seen in Coexisting Structures: Artists, Architects, and Nature, on view at the Johnson Education Center from March 30 to May 29. ❧ Now and for the Future, by Marina Ahun
