2 Notes from the Editor

Welcome to our Springtime issue of the Echo where there’s lots of news about upcoming events in the village. This weekend, it’s been great to be able to walk the dogs on our pigeon- scaring missions without the need for wellies. Let’s hope the weather stays fair for the outside events being planned. There was a big turnout for the Parish Plan Results meeting which included a presentation to thank Bob Foster for his 42 years service as a councillor. Jonathan Sullivan from windmill gave a very lively presentation about the Village Hall. The nephew of Dorothy & Cyril Allum who lived at Orchard House, just a few doors from the hall, he knows Badingham well – and has been up on our roof in days gone by, I seem to recall – better him than me! The Parish Council will fill you in with the findings of their survey and give you the date of the Annual Parish Meeting, which is coming up in May. Perhaps I’ll see you there?

Good health and best wishes, Tish

Now the weather is feeling more like Spring we are beginning to finalise arrangements for our Spring / Summer events.

This will take place on April 21st (Easter Monday) at 11 o’clock in the churchyard. A warm welcome will be given to all the children of the village so please come along and enjoy this seasonal event.

The fete will take place on Saturday June 21st, 1 – 4pm. We are delighted to confirm that this event will take place at the White Horse Pub by kind permission of the new owners, Lisa & Mark Clouting. They were delighted to be asked so please make their first Fete Day one to remember. If you would like to book a stall please ring Sonja (638268) to book (cost £5). All the money made will be spent in the Village so please come along and support us.

This event is for all Badingham Residents and Members of the BCC to come together to celebrate village life. You are invited to a village ‘get-together’ on Sunday July 13th from 3pm onwards in the church- yard (by kind permission of Jonathan). The BCC is funding the event and will supply the food but would like you to bring your own drink and chairs / rugs etc to sit on. As outside caterers have been booked, we will need confirmed numbers. To book tickets please ring Pauline (01728 602542) with your name, address and contact number and the number of tickets required. Your tickets will be either given to you before July 13th or on the day. We hope that as many residents as possible will come along, get to know new people in the village, see ‘old friends’ and neighbours and celebrate what a great village Badingham is.

4 We have now moved another step nearer - Gerry Newman recently met an East of Co-op surveyor at the Village Hall to discuss positioning of the defib. Photographs were taken of where the best place may be to install the machine so now we wait to hear the out- come of this visit. We will keep you informed.

Would you like to be more involved in organising village gatherings? We meet quarterly to plan events and fundraisers to benefit the whole community. Why not join us?

The competition is open to all Badingham residents - and if you are not online yourself, it’s a perfect excuse to call at the neighbours’ for a cuppa!

13 LINDA’S CHOCOLATE BROWNIE RECIPE

Thanks to Linda for sharing her recipe for Chocolate Brownies, which have proved so popular on the BCC cake stall and at the Parish Plan event

INGREDIENTS

375g unsalted butter 375g good dark chocolate 6 large eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 500g caster sugar 225g plain flour 1 teaspoon salt 300g chunks of good milk chocolate

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Preheat the oven to about 180 or gas mark 4. Line the brownie pan with baking paper.

Melt the butter and chocolate together in a large saucepan. In a bowl or big jug, beat the eggs, sugar and vanilla extract. Measure the flour and salt into another bowl.

When the chocolate mixture has melted, let it cool for a few minutes and then beat in the eggs and sugar, then the flour and then fold in the chocolate chunks. Pour the mixture into the brownie pan. Bake for about 25 minutes. When it’s ready the top breaks up a little bit.

The brownies have to look slightly under cooked in our house, so that the middle is still gooey, but leave them for longer if that is your preference.

18 Have you heard the story of Peter ‘Misty’ Wright VC?

Last Summer, the EDP shared the story of how Jenny Dewsbery’s uncle Peter Wright made history when the King intervened because he felt Peter’s heroic deeds deserved a Victoria Cross. Peter was born at , one of 14 children (8 brothers and 5 sisters) of a farming family. The article explains how in 1936 as a 20-year-old he set off from Badingham to join the Coldstream Guards followed by a commemoration in words and music little thinking that 8 years later he would be awarded the Victoria Cross for his ‘superb disregard of the enemy’s fire, his magnificent leadership and his outstanding heroism’. Earning steady promotion over his years of service, where he served in Palestine and Egypt, he was a lance-sergeant at the outbreak of WWII. By the summer of 1943, Peter had been promoted to company sergeant-major and he and the Coldstream Guards were involved in the invasion of Italy. On September 25th 1943, the Coldstreams’ objective was Point 270, a thickly wooded, steep-sided ridge. Defended by around a dozen hidden machine guns, guardsmen fell amongst the burning scrub. ‘Misty’ as he was known in the battalion, was with the unit's stretcher bearers when he came across his badly wounded company commander. The second in command was dying from his injuries and the remaining officers dead. That made Misty the senior rank in his company.

Dodging bursts of fire, Misty pushed his way up the hill to get a better understanding of the battle scene. He found three machine guns, each one on a different level just 30 yards from him. He knew he had to make a plan for their destruction. He gathered grenades, a rife and bayonet and called for volunteers to give him covering fire as he went forward to lob grenades into the first machine gun post. His men had barely reached the first post him when he was off again, after the second machine-gun. He rushed on by himself to the other two positions in turn, throwing his grenades and firing his rifle from the hip; in minutes it was all over. Many of the Germans, unnerved by the sight of him running at them with bayonet forward had simply bolted.

Contd overleaf

19 Peter had survived his solo charge with only a slight wound to his back. He took his life in his hands again to fetch more ammunition to enable the guardsmen to beat off further enemy attack.

His commanding officers were in no doubt that his action was worthy of the Victoria Cross. However, the Allies' commander-in-chief in Italy, General Harold Alexander, thought differently and down-graded the recommendation to an immediate DCM.

In the Summer of 1944 King George VI visited his troops in Italy to stage a number of battlefield investitures. The King presented Peter with his DCM but when he met with Gen. Alexander he raised the issue of Misty’s medal, saying in his opinion it should have been a VC. In doing so, history was made by the King questioning the recommendation made by a senior military commander.

A year after the war, Peter returned to farming, first at and later at Helmingham. He insisted he had done no more than his duty and what he had been trained to do.

21 SUN, SAND and er.... SHREK? by Sonja

Geoff and I had our recent holiday in Goa. During our second week, Shrek appeared on the beach at Calangute... to great excitement, with every Goan just as excited as me. Carefully fenced off and guarded, Shrek and his 20ft high castle were still there when we left. He was there as part of the Sand Art Festival. The sculpture of Shrek’s Castle has a giant ogre guarding the door with Donkey grinning at him goofily. The creator of this amazing piece of art, 54 year old sand artist Simon Smith, has been visiting Goa for 20 years. It’s like his second home - like me. The tourist industry is trying to promote Sand Art all over India; all the beaches are of sand. The sculpture, which needs to be gently sprayed with water and is lit up in spectacular fashion at night, could be viewed by all but anyone who photographs it is asked to make a donation to charity.

22 Dr Dan Poulter MP Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North

Working as an NHS hospital doctor has given me a unique insight into looking after some of the most vulnerable people living in our community, particularly the frail elderly. I can remember, 7 or 8 years ago, working as a junior doctor seeing vulnerable people with dementia and cancer forced onto trolleys and into hospital beds because they had been let down by poorly co-ordinated care in the community. So, when I became your MP in 2010, this was something I was determined to change, and to use my real life experience of working in our NHS to help to make a difference in bringing greater dignity in the care of older people and people with long term medical conditions. As a Government minister, it is a great privilege to be making laws in Parliament to change things for the better. When the care bill becomes law later this Spring, people will no longer be forced to sell off their homes in their lifetime to pay for care and, with a new £3.8 billion integrated care fund, the care bill marks an important step forward in delivering more care and support for carers. As a doctor, my first duty is always to my patients and as your local MP, my first duty is to my local residents. I am pleased that the work I am doing as a Government Minister, will, in the months and years to come, bring huge benefits and improvements in the quality of care for the elderly, people with long term conditions and disabilities, as well as more support for their families and carers. I was recently asked by some local school children which do I enjoy most, being an MP or being a doctor? In helping to make laws to improve are of older and disabled people in parliament, the answer has to be both, because being a doctor has made me a better MP. I hold regular constituency advice surgeries locally to help people who have problems. If you think that I may be able to help you, please contact me on 01728 685 148, or email me via www.drdanielpoulter.com
