One such social setting that most of us experience on a daily basis concerns the team context. Building on recent theorizing about the humor—performance association in teams, this study seeks to increase our understanding of the function and effects of humor in team interaction settings. -

OLATUNJI University of Massachusetts CRAIG N. SAWCHUK University of Washington School of Medicine Emotions have been a long–standing cornerstone of research in social and clinical psychology. Although the systematic examination of emotional processes has yielded a rather comprehensive theoretical and scientific literature, dramatically less empirical attention has been devoted to disgust. In the present article, the na- ture, experience, and other associated features of disgust are outlined. We also re- view the domains of disgust and highlight how these domains have expanded over time. The function of disgust in various social constructions, such as cigarette smoking, vegetarianism, and homophobia, is highlighted. Disgust is also becoming increasingly recognized as an influential emotion in the onset, maintenance, and treatment of various phobic states, Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder, and eating disorders. In comparison to the other emotions, disgust offers great promise for fu- ture social and clinical research efforts, and prospective studies designed to improve our understanding of disgust are outlined. The nature, structure, and function of emotions have a rich tradition in the social and clinical psychology literature (Cacioppo & Gardner, 1999). Revisiting classical aesthetics in the light of recent psychological research, we present a novel model to explain this much discussed (apparent) paradox. We argue that negative emotions are an important resource for the arts in general, rather than a special license for exceptional art forms only. The underlying rationale is that negative emotions have been shown to be particularly powerful in securing attention, intense emotional involvement, and high memorability, and hence is precisely what artworks strive for. Two groups of processing mechanisms are identified that conjointly adopt the particular powers of negative emotions for art’s purposes. -

Look carefully at the image above and identify the different, lines, shapes, and forms of both GAlexander Calder’s sculpture and the architecture of LACMA’s built environ- ment. What is the proportion of the artwork to the buildings? What types of balance do you see? Following are images of artworks from LACMA’s collection. As you explore these works, look for the lines, seek the shapes, find the patterns, and exercise your problem-solving skills. Geometry and Art, What a Concept! Mayra Muller-Schmidt Sharpstown Middle School WHAT WILL THEY SEE? “Now class, visualize a cube . .” Some pupils will immediately think of a piece of ice; others can see a three-dimensional cubed shape in their mind’s eye; yet other children will still see a flat square. An ordinary cube is made up of six squares; however, so many students fail to establish an articulate difference between a square and a cube. Geometric forms are numerous and perhaps confusing to a young mind that hasn’t yet formulated a real sense of perceiving dimension, vocabulary, or comprehension of forms. Connecting Different Cognitive Skills Can Connect the Dots . My interest in integrating and emphasizing geometry is twofold. Geometric shapes are some of the strongest forms used in modern art. Geometry has a strong history that, throughout the centuries, has been involved, integrated, and eventually indispensable in art and architecture. Artists have studied geometry in order to draw angles, proportion, and perspective, in order to illustrate or emote the illusion of realism. Geometric forms, currently, are explored and seen everyday in our surroundings. Geometry is an important subject, one which plays a strong part as a tool in art and needs to be emphasized at some point in a person’s education. Students can benefit from the awareness that art and math share a significant part together. Surely, a secondary reason for weaving geometry into an art unit is to strengthen and complement both subject matter skills. The practice and repetition of maneuvering shapes and forms and then relating them to math vocabulary will enhance knowledge for those who already have a strong sense for forms, angles, and dimension. -

Art Criticism Well……..? That’s why Critical Thinking matters…..in its broadest sense it can be described as purposeful reflective judgment concerning what to believe or what to do. I don’t know anything about art, but I know what I like. And I really don’t need a class to help me with this... Taste Taste Taste as an aesthetic, sociological, economic and anthropological concept refers to cultural patterns of choice and preference regarding aesthetic judgments. What determines aesthetic judgments? Is it really just a function of our biases? And why should we even care about things we don’t like ? Well, for one…..because art exists for more than one subgroup or individual…. Art is part of our Public (shared) Experience ART is reflective of the HUMAN EXPERIENCE…good and bad. The Mathematics of Art: An Untold Story Project Script Maria Deamude Math 2590 Nov 9, 2010 Art is a creative venue that can, and has, been used for many purposes throughout time. Religion, politics, propaganda and self-expression have all used art as a vehicle for conveying various messages, without many references to the technical aspects. Art and mathematics are two terms that are not always thought of as being interconnected. Yet they most definitely are; for art is a highly technical process. Following the histories of maths and sciences – if not instigating them – art practices and techniques have developed and evolved since man has been on earth. Many mathematical developments occurred during the Italian and Northern Renaissances. I will describe some of the math involved in art-making, most specifically in architectural and painting practices. Through the medieval era and into the Renaissance, 1100AD through to 1600AD, certain significant mathematical theories used to enhance aesthetics developed. Understandings of line, and placement and scale of shapes upon a flat surface developed to the point of creating illusions of reality and real, three dimensional space. One can look at medieval frescos and altarpieces and witness a very specific flatness which does not create an illusion of real space. Frescos are like murals where paint and plaster have been mixed upon a wall to create the image – Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel and Leonardo’s The Last Supper are both famous examples of frescos. The beginning of the creation of the appearance of real space can be seen in Giotto’s frescos in the late 1200s and early 1300s.
