Meet The Suffragists A Presentation by the 2018-2020 GFWC-SC Ad Hoc Committee to Celebrate the Centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment Meet the Suffragists Susan B. Anthony Champion of temperance, abolition, the rights of labor, and equal pay for equal work, Susan Brownell Anthony became one of the most visible leaders of the women’s suffrage movement. Born on February 15, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts, Susan was inspired by the Quaker belief that everyone was equal under God. That idea guided her throughout her life. She had seven brothers and sisters, many of whom became activists for justice and emancipation of slaves. In 1851, Anthony met Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The two women became good friends and worked together for over 50 years fighting for women’s rights. They traveled the country and Anthony gave speeches demanding that women be given the right to vote. In 1872, Anthony was arrested for voting. She was tried and fined $100 for her crime. This made many people angry and brought national attention to the suffrage movement. In 1876, she led a protest at the 1876 Centennial of our nation’s independence. She gave a speech—“Declaration of Rights”— written by Stanton and another suffragist, Matilda Joslyn Gage. Anthony died in 1906, 14 years before women were given the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. New York State’s Women’s Suffrage History Votes for Women! Celebrating New York’s Suffrage On November 6, 1917, New York State passed the referendum for women’s suffrage. This victory was an important event for New York State and the nation. Suffrage in New York State signaled that the national passage of women’s suffrage would soon follow, and in August 1920, “Votes for Women” were constitutionally guaranteed. Although women began asserting their independence long before, the irst coordinated work for women’s suffrage began at the Seneca Falls convention in 1848. The convention served as a catalyst for debates and action. Women like Susan B. Anthony and Matilda Joslyn Gage organized and rallied for support of women’s suffrage throughout upstate New York. Others, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Amelia Bloomer supported the effort through the use of their pens. Stanton wrote letters, speeches, and articles while Bloomer published the irst newspaper for women, The Lily, in 1849. These combined efforts culminated in the creation of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA). By the dawn of the twentieth century, the political and social landscape was much different in New York State than ifty years before. The state experienced dramatic advances in industry and urban growth. Several large waves of immigrants settled throughout the state and now more and more women were working outside of the home. Reformers concerns shifted to labor issues, health care, and temperance. New reformers like Harriot Stanton Blatch and Carrie Chapman Catt used new tactics such as marches, meetings, and signed petitions to show that New Yorkers wanted suffrage. -

The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. It was ratified by the states on August 18, 1920 and certified as an amendment to the US Constitution on August 26, 1920. Developed in partnership with the National Park Service, this publication weaves together multiple stories about the quest for women’s suffrage across the country, including those who opposed it, the role of allies and other civil rights movements, who was left behind, and how the battle differed in communities across the United States. Protecting Water Quantity in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness The lower 15% of the Everglades ecosystem and watershed have been designated as the Everglades National Park (ENP), and about 87% of ENP is designated the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness. The natural quality of the wilderness has been impacted by longstanding and pervasive upstream water manipulation. As an undeveloped area of land, it appears as wilderness, but ecologically is unnatural; in particular, related to water conditions. In the early 1900s, several uncoordinated efforts upstream of the ENP dredged canals to move water to agriculture and domestic uses, and away from areas where urban development was occurring. In response to unprecedented flooding during the 1947 hurricane season, Congress established the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control Project to systematically regulate the Everglades hydrology through 1,700 miles of canals and levees upstream of what is now designated wilderness. Little consideration was given to the ecology of the Everglades. Currently, the wilderness receives more water than natural in the wet season when developed areas in southern Florida are trying to prevent flooding. During the dry season, agricultural and domestic uses create a demand for water that results in significantly diminished flows entering the wilderness. A key provision of Everglades National Park's 1934 enabling legislation identified the area as "...permanently reserved as a wilderness...and no development shall be undertaken which will interfere with the preservation intact of the unique flora and fauna and essential primitive natural conditions..." A critical goal to meet this mission is to replicate the natural systems in terms of water quantity, quality, timing, and distribution. -

The town was founded by her father, Judge Michael Cochran. Elizabeth had fourteen siblings. Her father had ten children from his first marriage and five children from his second marriage to Elizabeth’s mother, Mary Jane Kennedy. Michael Cochran’s rise from mill worker to mill owner to judge meant his family lived very comfortably. Unfortunately, he died when Elizabeth was only six years old and his fortune was divided among his many children, leaving Elizabeth’s mother and her children with a small fraction of the wealth they once enjoyed. Elizabeth’s mother soon remarried, but quickly divorced her second husband because of abuse, and relocated the family to Pittsburgh. Elizabeth knew that she would need to support herself financially. At the age of 15, she enrolled in the State Normal School in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and an added an “e” to her last name to sound more distinguished. Her plan was to graduate and find a position as a teacher. However, after only a year and a half, Elizabeth ran out of money and could no longer afford the tuition. -

From that we have the famous quote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men and women are created equal”. They also demanded the right to vote. The women's suffrage movement had begun. With the exceptional work done by women during WWI, the 19th Amendment was passed granting women the right to vote. Women began to enter the workplace following The Great Depression. Women had active roles in the military during WWII. Following the Civil Rights movement, the Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963 to begin to address the unequal pay women in the workplace faced. Second wave feminism (equality and discrimination): In 1971, feminist Gloria Steinem joined Betty Friedan and Bella Abzug in founding the National Women’s Political Caucus. During this time many people had started referring to feminism as “women’s liberation.” In 1972 the Equal Rights Amendment was passed and women gained legal equality and discrimination of sex was banned. -

2 0 2 0 - A Y E A R that changed everything DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION DECEMBER 18, 2020 For Florida students in grades 6 - 8 PRESENTED BY THE FLORIDA COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN To commemorate and honor women's history and PURPOSE members of the Florida Women's Hall of Fame Sponsored by the Florida Commission on the Status of Women, the Florida Women’s History essay contest is open to both boys and girls and serves to celebrate women's history and to increase awareness of the contributions made by Florida women, past and present. Celebrating women's history presents the opportunity to honor and recount stories of our ancestors' talents, sacrifices, and commitments and inspires today's generations. Learning about our past allows us to build our future. THEME 2021 “Do your part to inform and stimulate the public to join your action.” ― Marjory Stoneman Douglas This year has been like no other. Historic events such as COVID-19, natural disasters, political discourse, and pressing social issues such as racial and gender inequality, will make 2020 memorable to all who experienced it. Write a letter to any member of the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame, telling them about life in 2020 and how they have inspired you to work to make things better. Since 1982, the Hall of Fame has honored Florida women who, through their lives and work, have made lasting contributions to the improvement of life for residents across the state.
