  • 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Glasgow School of Art: RADAR 'I Spy': Mike Leigh in the Age of Britpop (A Critical Memoir) David Sweeney During the Britpop era of the 1990s, the name of Mike Leigh was invoked regularly both by musicians and the journalists who wrote about them. To compare a band or a record to Mike Leigh was to use a form of cultural shorthand that established a shared aesthetic between musician and filmmaker. Often this aesthetic similarity went undiscussed beyond a vague acknowledgement that both parties were interested in 'real life' rather than the escapist fantasies usually associated with popular entertainment. This focus on 'real life' involved exposing the ugly truth of British existence concealed behind drawing room curtains and beneath prim good manners, its 'secrets and lies' as Leigh would later title one of his films. I know this because I was there. Here's how I remember it all: Jarvis Cocker and Abigail's Party To achieve this exposure, both Leigh and the Britpop bands he influenced used a form of 'real world' observation that some critics found intrusive to the extent of voyeurism, particularly when their gaze was directed, as it so often was, at the working class. Jarvis Cocker, lead singer and lyricist of the band Pulp -exemplars, along with Suede and Blur, of Leigh-esque Britpop - described the band's biggest hit, and one of the definitive Britpop songs, 'Common People', as dealing with "a certain voyeurism on the part of the middle classes, a certain romanticism of working class culture and a desire to slum it a bit".

  • Glam Rock by Barney Hoskyns 1
Glam Rock By Barney Hoskyns There's a new sensation A fabulous creation, A danceable solution To teenage revolution Roxy Music, 1973 1: All the Young Dudes: Dawn of the Teenage Rampage Glamour – a word first used in the 18th Century as a Scottish term connoting "magic" or "enchantment" – has always been a part of pop music. With his mascara and gold suits, Elvis Presley was pure glam. So was Little Richard, with his pencil moustache and towering pompadour hairstyle. The Rolling Stones of the mid-to- late Sixties, swathed in scarves and furs, were unquestionably glam; the group even dressed in drag to push their 1966 single "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" But it wasn't until 1971 that "glam" as a term became the buzzword for a new teenage subculture that was reacting to the messianic, we-can-change-the-world rhetoric of late Sixties rock. When T. Rex's Marc Bolan sprinkled glitter under his eyes for a TV taping of the group’s "Hot Love," it signaled a revolt into provocative style, an implicit rejection of the music to which stoned older siblings had swayed during the previous decade. "My brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones," Mott the Hoople's Ian Hunter drawled on the anthemic David Bowie song "All the Young Dudes," "we never got it off on that revolution stuff..." As such, glam was a manifestation of pop's cyclical nature, its hedonism and surface show-business fizz offering a pointed contrast to the sometimes po-faced earnestness of the Woodstock era.

Quareia—The Adept Module II—Magical Construction Lesson 7: The Hall of Planetary Spirits by Josephine McCarthy Quareia Welcome Welcome to this lesson of the Quareia curriculum. The Quareia takes a magical apprentice from the beginning of magic to the level of adeptship and beyond. The course has no superfluous text; there is no dressing, no padding—everything is in its place and everything within the course has a good reason to be there. For more information and all course modules please visit www.quareia.com So remember—in order for this course to work, it is wise to work with the lessons in sequence. If you don’t, it won’t work. Yours, Quareia—The Adept Module II—Magical Construction Lesson 7: The Hall of Planetary Spirits Another, and final, layer that we add to the temple is that of the planetary spirits. This brings the influence of the planetary spirits into a closer relationship with the Inner Temple, which focuses the patterns of fate and the tides of influence that the planets have on the temple’s life and work. This enables the Inner Temple adepts to foresee the tides of fate that gather and express out in the world, and to adjust the temple’s work accordingly. Working in such close connection with the planetary spirits and their influences lets our adepts work with the momentum of the streams of fate rather than pushing against them. It also allows the specific qualities of the individual planetary spirits to be worked with, consulted, and brought into action with the work of the temple and individual adepts through the generations.

Lush - Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson on 1996 Album “Lovelife” and the Last Days of the Band undertheradarmag.com /interviews/lush_- _miki_berenyi_and_emma_anderson_on_1996_album_lovelife_and_the_last_d/ "Lush was so tied up with Chris, and without him, it's just really, really difficult to consider [a reunion]." - Miki Berenyi Apr 28, 2015 By Frank Valish Issue #51 - September/October 2014 - alt-J The year was 1996. Lush had released its third full-length album, Lovelife. Although their shoegaze-crossed-with- pop songwriting never truly fit into Britain's chart-centric musical atmosphere, the band was finally getting its due, with Lovelife cracking the Top 10 on Britain's album charts and spawning three charting singles, "Single Girl," "Ladykiller," and "500 (Shake Baby Shake)." The band was in demand for concerts across the U.S. and Europe. On the surface, it seemed like things couldn't get any better. But within a year, it would all be over. 1/4 Lush formed in London in 1988, fronted by school friends Emma Anderson (guitars/vocals) and Miki Berenyi (vocals/guitars), along with Chris Acland (drums) and Steve Rippon (bass). After releasing a series of EPs that garnered Lush attention in the U.K., including 1990 cover stories for both Melody Maker and NME, Rippon left and was replaced by Philip King just prior to the release of the band's full-length debut. Spooky, released in 1992, was an album that showcased the dream-pop soundscapes and ethereal melodies of the band's two frontwomen and propelled Lush to recognition in America with a gig on 1992's Lollapalooza festival.
