Applying Insights from Cultural Studies to Adult Education: What Seinfeld Says About the AERC Nod Miller University of East London, UK Abstract: The zany adventures of a glamorous British professor who goes to an important international conference but spends most of her time searching for a TV in order to watch her favourite sitcom. Despite her commitment to "no hugging, no learning", she gains some profound insights into mass culture, adult education, friendship and postmodernity as a result. Parental guidance suggested. Prologue: The Convergence This paper has grown out of a critical incident in my own learning biography, where a convergence of two cultural events brought together several discrete elements of my personal and professional identity and led me to reflect on aspects of relationships between the mass media and adult education.

INFORMATION TO USERS This manuscript has been reproduced from the microfilm master. UMI films the text directly from the original or copy submitted. Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. • Secret Formulas of the Wizard of Ads Copyright © 2010 by Roy H
Dear Reader: Some time ago I published a book titledThe Wizard of Ads: Turning Words into Magic and Dreamers into Millionaires. That collection of essays by Roy Hollister Williams on life and commerce came into my possession under rather extraordinary circumstances, and I felt compelled to share them with a larger audience. Shortly after the book’s publication, correspondence began to pour in from around the country. People in all walks of life told how the Wizard had radically changed the way they thought about advertising, business, and life. Many asked for more help in putting the Wizard’s powerful principles into action. His essays had convinced them of the need to change, but the question in their minds was “How?” One letter mentioned rumors of an Academy, a school of ancient principles and wisdom, where the elusive Wizard shared his philosophy and teachings with selected students. Intrigued, I began to make inquiries, and, after much effort and expense, I was able to verify its existence. My quest eventually brought into my hands the Wizard’s annotated teaching guide and numerous personal effects. The spirit of the Wizard’s work best shines through in one of his letters where he says, “There are as many kinds of Wizards as there are passions in the hearts of humanity, yet a single characteristic is common to them all: Wizards love to be fascinated. Refusing to be restricted by the limitations of the body, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking attained the status of Wizards of Worlds. Read of Henry Ford and the Wright Brothers and you’ll witness the birth of Wizards of Wrenches.

Great Quotes Brought to you by SeinfeldQuotes.net Jerry: House in the Hamptons? George: Well, you know, I've been lying about my income for a few years; I figured I could afford a fake house in the Hamptons. -from “The Wizard” Kramer: Newman and I are reversing the peepholes on our door so you can see in. Elaine: Why? Newman: To prevent an ambush. Kramer: Yeah, so now I can peek to see if anyone is waiting to jack me with a sock full of pennies. Jerry: But then anyone can just look in and see you. Kramer: Our policy is, we're comfortable with our bodies. You know, if someone wants to help themselves to an eyeful, well, we say "Enjoy the show." -from “The Reverse Peephole” Jerry: His name is Joel Horneck. He lived, like, three houses down from me when I grew up. He had a Ping Pong table. We were friends. Should I suffer the rest of my life because I like to play Ping Pong? I was ten! I would've been friends with Stalin if he had a Ping Pong table! -from “Male Unbonding” Kramer: ¿Como se dice.. waterbed? -from “The Busboy” Kramer: Jerry, I'm sorry… You have insurance, right? Jerry: No. Kramer: How could you not have insurance? Jerry: Because I spent my money on the Klapco D29! It's the most impenetrable lock in the market today! It has only one design flaw. The door… must be closed! -from “The Robbery” Elaine: Ya know, its not fair people are seated first-come-first-serve.
