  • Once There Was Nothing, a Great Chaos of Nothing. Then There Was Order
"Once there was nothing, a great chaos of nothing. Then there was order. Order came from the nothing and created the materium, the physical world, and in its quest for control, it created disparity, and from disparity came corruption, and the immaterium, the non-physical worlds beyond the event horizon. The two battled, and broke upon each other for an age, forging weapons of immense size and power across the voids of materium and imamaterium. Then there was the Third, and the Third was given the first choice, continue along the path of broken futility, or descend, and at the cost of oblivion become more. Then there was more, then there was life. The first life broke and shattered at the cost of the Third and the first death, but then came more, and life spread to all corners of existence, to even the depths of space, the children of the Third. Order fell first, and broke, leaving its scattered ashes across life, giving them the desire for more, faith in something greater and all the pain it causes. Corruption fell slower, and broke into shards, gods in between the cracks of oblivion, some intent upon seizing the forming existence, others content to await the day their time would come, as all that is, is doomed to break and die. This was the inception of our existence, of which our small universe is only a very small part of. Before this universe there was another, in which the bastards of corruption attempted to force entry into this reality at the heat death of the universe, to become consumers of the next one after, they built cults and bade them to work in the places they could not reach, and readied their entrance, what they did not suspect that the little monsters that had infested this existence had the gall to oppose them.

  • Musical Culture and the Modernist Writer
SUBLIME NOISE: MUSICAL CULTURE AND THE MODERNIST WRITER By Joshua Benjamin Epstein Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Vanderbilt University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in ENGLISH December, 2008 Nashville, Tennessee Approved: Professor Mark Wollaeger Professor Carolyn Dever Professor Joy Calico Professor Jonathan Neufeld ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First thanks go to the members of my incomparable dissertation committee. Mark Wollaeger's perceptive critiques and (somehow) relentless optimism have been deeply appreciated, and Carolyn Dever's clarifying questions and sound advice have proven invaluable. As teachers, mentors, and readers of my work, Mark and Carolyn have been models of professionalism and generosity since I first arrived at Vanderbilt. Joy Calico's near-omniscience and keen critical eye have aided this project from its inception, and she has graciously tolerated my encroachment on her disciplinary terrain. Jonathan Neufeld has in many ways helped me grapple with the complex philosophical issues at stake (more complex than I had imagined!). To all four, I extend my sincere gratitude. My research has been funded by a grant from the College of Arts and Sciences; by the Robert Manson Myers Graduate Award in English; and by a year-long fellowship at Vanderbilt's Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities. Mona Frederick, Galyn Martin, and Sarah Nobles have worked tirelessly to make the Warren Center a pleasant and intellectually vibrant environment, and while a fellow there I benefited greatly from the collegiality and wisdom of Michael Callaghan, Megan Moran, George Sanders, Nicole Seymour, David Solodkow, and Heather Talley.

I’m thankful for my parents, Donald and Jane McNett, who consistently pestered me by asking “How’s it coming with your thesis? Are you done yet?” I’m thankful for friends, such as: Adam Suarez, Phillip Sitter, Brandon Roney, Robert Gayden and Zach Folken, who would periodically ask me “What’s your thesis about again?” That was a question that would unintentionally put me back on track. In terms of staying on task my thesis committee (mentioned elsewhere) was nothing short of a godsend. The charge of the celebrated English poet laureate and historiographer of the sixteenth century certainly cannot be applied to Sussex County. Ever since its erection, one hundred and fifty years ago, its citizens have manifested most commendable interest in all that pertained to the history of the county and to the record of the lives of the energetic and noble men who have so continuously wrought for the growth and prosperity of the county and for the best welfare and happiness of its citizens. If any "chasms" occur in our county's history, as there undoubtedly do, we fancy they are more attributable to the rapid pace at which we are living than to any intentional thoughtlessness on the part of the citizens of the county.
