The case of Doctor Faustus represents the epitome of the instability of a dramatic source text. Two main versions of the play (the so-called A-text and the B-text) differ in structural, thematic and doctrinal terms. At the same time, neither version delivers a coherent vision. The research seeks to examine whether Bazy’s and Turiello’s translation, emerging at 50-year intervals and belonging to different yet related geographical, historical and literary traditions, further multiply the potential readings of the original or whether they display a more consistent framework. In addition, we will analyse the causes of textual variation. The regularities of the translators’ behaviour and their intervention in translation are manifested across a consistent trend of changes, technically labelled as shifts. First, we will apply a comparative model of translation analysis in order to identify the shifts that occur in the process of linguistic rendering. Then, we will discuss the ways in which the identified patterns of shifts affect the general meaning and the structure of the target texts in question. Finally, adopting a socio-cultural approach, we will show how certain shifts are conditioned by different cultural and ideological factors operating in the recipient systems. This will confirm or reveal the translators’ own ideology and the interpretation of the original, which is in turn indicative of their positions within the complex political and ideological space that surrounds them. The results demonstrate that the two translations represent the ideological extremes in the general reception of the Faust myth and that they mirror a different point in the cultural and political evolution of nineteenth-century Europe. i Abbreviations A1 (A) The so-called A-text (quarto of 1604): The Tragicall History of D.     Johann Georg Faust Dr. Johann Georg Faust (approx. 1480 – 1540) was a German alchemist who was born in the village of Knittlingen, Württemberg (it is also claimed in Roda in the province of Weimar, and also in Helmstadt near Heidelberg in 1466). He has alternatively been known by the names “Johann Sabellicus” and “Georg Faust.” In 1507, Johannes Trithemius of Sponheim wrote that Faust was a con-man and a drifter who preyed on the gullible. He said he had fled a teaching position in Kreuznach after molesting several of the boys there. He may have then gone on to the University of Heidelberg to study, obtaining a degree in divinity from Heidelberg University in 1509, and then to Poland where a friend of Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, says Faust studied magic at the University of Kraków. Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon are said to have alleged Faust’s companionship with the devil. After that, he appears at the University of Ehrfut in central Germany. It is said that when he lectured on Homer he conjured up Homer’s heroes for his students. He was expelled from Ehrfut by the Franciscan monk Dr. Klinge (who was the cathedral preacher from 1520-1556). Dr. Klinge asked for Faust’s repentance. Faust refused the monk’s offer of intervention and admitted having signed a pact with the Devil, and said that he trusted the Devil more than God. In 1523 he is said to have visited Auerbach’s Tavern in Leipzig where he conjured wine out of a table, and rode a barrel of wine.

Although they were brothers, one was born nearly twen- ty years before the second and that influenced their future. Alexander, born in 1777 was the first son of the successor to the throne and was raised from the beginning as the future ruler. The person who shaped his education the most was his grandmother, empress Catherine the Second. She appoint- ed the Swiss philosopher La Harpe as his teacher and wanted Alexander to become the enlightened monarch. Nicholas, on the other hand, was never meant to rule and was never prepared for it. He was born is 1796 as the ninth child and third son and by the will of his parents, Tsar Paul I and Tsarina Maria Fyodorovna he received education more suitable for a soldier than a tsar, but he eventually as- cended to the throne after Alexander died. One may ask how these differences influenced them and how they shaped their personalities as people and as rulers. I claim that all three poets used the rusalka characters in their works as a means of expressing their innermost fantasies, desires, hopes, and fears about females and that there is a direct correlation between the poets’ personal lives and their experiences with women and the rusalka characters in their works. Aleksandr Pushkin used the rusalka figure in two of his poems¾the short whimsical poem “Rusalka” written in 1819, and the longer more serious poetic drama “Rusalka” that he started in 1829 and never finished. The ways in which Pushkin uses the rusalka characters in these works represent his growth and development in terms of experiencing and understanding women’s complex internal worlds and women’s role in his personal and professional life. I claim that the 1819 poem “Rusalka” represents the ideas that Pushkin had early on in his life associated with a power struggle between men and women and his fears related to women, whom he viewed as simplistic, unpredictable, and irrational, with the potential of assuming control over men through their beauty and sexuality and potentially using that control to lead men to their downfall.
