In the world we live in, people stereotype every group: age, gender, race, etc. No one is safe. Teenagers especially are judged most by adults simply because of age. These misconceptions come at us early from all sides, whether it be from teachers, parents, relatives, and quite frequently, from Lstrangers. Teens are typecast as bad drivers, immature, and irresponsible. And do not forget the assumption that we are far too lazy to do our work and therefore do not bother to read. These are just a few of the labels adults place on us. The question is, are these stereotypes fact or fallacy? In a world where the “cup” is half-full or half-empty, teenagers are viewed as people who aspire to nothing more than a half-empty life. Teenagers do not read. If this was true, then you obviously would not have made it this far into the article. In reality, some do fit into this category. They are the ones who do not even bother to skim Sparknotes in place of reading the book assigned in class. Instead of having a shot at passing the test, they take a failing grade. Senior Brent Holford said, “Are you kidding me? Teenagers don’t read!” This is what people assume of ALL teenagers. However, many students do read every single book teachers have assigned us throughout our four years here at Monmouth, even when it was so boring we would rather bang our heads against a desk. We are essentially good, not bad. All teens are bad drivers. It is assumed that we all go twenty miles over the speed limit, cut people off, and total our brand new cars. Senior John Cahill said, “I was driving through a parking lot and got hit head on. When the police came, they acted as if it were my fault, just because I was the teen driver.” It seems that all of us, even those who obey the laws, are automatically put in the “bad driver” category. If teens are the only bad drivers, why do adults still get in accidents? One would think that since they are no longer young they should have outgrown their “reckless” driving by now. Guess what. Bad drivers are every age. Everywhere teens go, the world views them as lazy and immature. Maybe there are some of us who fit that bill. Fortunately, some see beyond our age. Librarian Mrs. Eppinger said that she judges students based on how they act. Unfortunately many people do not do the same. Rather than seeing teens as individuals, they judge them as an age group. The mistakes of one become the mistakes of all. However, all of the faults they find with us are mistakes adults also make. Can you say hypocrite? These adults fit into many categories: The Lindsay Lohans who refuse to grow up, The Mel Gibsons who have numerous DUI’s, and the Paris Hiltons who have not picked up a book since graduation. But then again, those are stereotypes themselves. Prejudice is a never ending battle. As long as one teen makes mistakes, we are all deemed guilty. If all teens cannot drive and do not read, then all adults are too ignorant to look beyond characterizations and see us for the people we are. ORIAL EDI T
