All you have to do is let the boat captains know you’d like to participate. Here is a little about each of our boats:

First there is E-Ticket, a Beneteau SDSM 38. Lots of our members might not know what E-ticket means. But if you are old enough, you know that an E-ticket used to be required to ride the most exciting, expensive attractions in Disneyland. Captain Noble Griswold masquerades by day as a mild-mannered real estate broker and on Thursday evenings he turns into a competitive, crew-driving, equipment- breaking sailor who is driven to win. • John Dillo drives Quila, a Santa Cruise 27. You might be able to guess the derivative of the name. I think it has something to do with, well, I think you get the picture. John loves to sail and doesn’t take much to get him out. By the way, if you have a kid in school who needs help, he is your man. He is known for his ability help kids with their math. • Jeff Christle, of Brandy, sails a Farr 1/2 ton 30-foot. You’ll see him out with his crew of 1 or 2 every Thursday. He’s a good sailor, too, and shares the same traits as Noble … a desire to win. Did I mention that if there are two going in the same direction, it’s a race. • One of our newer sailors is Stephen Dale, who sails a 32-foot Hunter 320 named Playpen. Not that Stephen is new to his boat, this is just the first year he has decided sail on Thursday nights. • And then there is Nick Grebe who sails Evil Octopus, an 18-foot Hobie Tiger. This is a catamaran. Last year it appeared that Nick spent some time in the water. This year, with Jack Sutter as the pilot, is different—Evil Octopus is very competitive. • Chuck Hooper sails a Contessa 33 named Warwhoop. Chuck sails whenever he can. It is not unusual to see Chuck sailing single-handed some evenings and weekends. • Nils Knutstad sails Little Dipper, a Catalina 22—which is ironic, since he used to pilot huge tankers on the open ocean and now trains pilots to do the same. It is nice to see him and his son sailing in our races. • Deborah Lyons is the skipper of Stolen, a Tillotson J/24. She is our only woman owner and skipper. Don’t think Deborah is out just for the fun of it. She is very competitive and is out to win.• Jerry Martin sails Alte Liebe, an Albin Ballad 30. Jerry has probably sailed in the fleet the longest. He was there almost from the beginning and still sails every Thursday night. • Kelly Steward is the owner of Between the Sheets, a Jeanneau 52. Kelly is new to the fleet and is proving to be quite a challenge to the fleet.• Ron Tosch is the proud owner of H&H, a Beneteau 46. H&H is a cruiser, not really set up for racing. But don’t tell Ron, he’s having too much fun racing with his crew. He gets better and better every week. • Jeremy Westerman and his wife Joan sail Odette, a Catali- na 36 MkII. This boat is new to the fleet and they are having way too much fun learning the boat and getting to be competitive.• Dan Carnahan sails Sail la Vie, a Santana 22. Dan is the fleet Captain and is responsible for organizing our sailing fleet. Dan is also very competitive and routinely wins in his class.

Come to the club on Thursday nights to meet the boats’ Captains and crews after the races and ask to accompany them the next week. If you have a boat and want to race, talk to Dan Carnahan, race chair. We are all having too much fun! Join us! BYC—a Boating Club or a Social Club?

As many members of BYC have strong feelings of whether BYC is a boaters club and/or a social club, I thought I would reprint the “Purpose of BYC,” per our “Bylaws” and remind all our members that we are both! We strive to provide our members with fun activities both afloat and on land. Purpose of BYC per our Bylaws

• Promote the Social Interests and Pleasures of its membership. • Foster and encourage yachting and boating activities. BYC May 16, 1983 • Promote and increase the knowledge and efficiency of its membership and others in the science of navi- gation and the art of handling, operating and main- taining powerboats, sailboats and other watercraft. As non-boat owner members and boat owners alike support our club, please, cruisers, if you haven’t already, offer to take a non- boat owner on a cruise-out the next time you out. They will have a better appreciation and understanding of boating and all it has to offer and you just might make a new friend and future boat owner. Remember, boat owner or not, BYC is for boat owners and non-boat owners alike, as both are needed for BYC’s existence and future prosperity. BYC September 4, 1983

The Spring racing season at BYC began April 4. There were a few new boats on the water for the 2019 sea- son and there is a new fleet, the Aloha Fleet, racing. There were quite a few boats out our first evening, and the weather was perfect for the first of the season and for those who are new to the Thursday night Beer Can Races hosted by the Benicia Yacht Club.

This year we welcomed newcomers Odette, skippered by Jeremy Westerman, joining the fleet as well as Between the Sheets, and Play Pen with Stephen Dale at the helm joining in in the Aloha Fleet.

Don and Anita Glidewell have once again offered to host the Race Committee (RC) on Thursday nights on their ves- sel whenever available. Deb Hall is the Coordinator of the group of volunteers on the Race Committee. The RC are the people who keep the race times, and start the race and record the finishes for the racers. Joining Deb are Mittie Railsback, the time keeper and recorder; Linda York as recorder; and John Garcia firing the gun and warning blasts. Ellen Whitehead will be raising and lowering the flags and keeping time as well. An alternate is Mark Camp- bell who jumps in to the job as needed. For the most part the jobs can be done by anyone on the committee.

While the sailors’ jobs are to work as a team to sail to the wind, know the currents, understand the course and the figure out the best way to perform to win, the Race Committee has a job of their own. Without them there wouldn’t be correct results given each boat as to their fair win.

The start sequence is a five-minute countdown with the following jobs that the RC does to begin the start of the race. At 1800 hours a “C” Flag and gun warning for the “C” fleet rings out. At 1801 the “P” flag and a short horn blast goes off as a prep signal for the C fleet. At 1805 the “P” flag goes down with the start gun shot for the start of the “C” fleet. At 1806 the “P” flag goes up with a short horn blast, a prep signal for the “A” Fleet. At 1809 the “P” flag comes down with a long horn blast and a minute later at 1810 the “A” flag comes down with a shot for the “A” Fleet to start their race. The RC would go through the same timing sequence until all the classes have begun racing.

As the boats finish, there is one person from the RC sighting the finish line as the boats cross while the timer is counting down the time of the finish; at least two people will be recording the finish time of each vessel as they cross the line for accuracy. There is a yellow flag on the line with the buoy for sight of the finish line. The others would shoot the gun for the first boat of each fleet as they cross the finish line and a horn for each vessel other than the first in the fleet to cross.

There are so many other signals that could occur and the RC must be ready for action in those cases. For instance, if a boat goes over the start line early, the committee must signal and raise a flag. There are times when there is not enough wind or the conditions have changed or a situation has occurred during the race that the RC might have to change the course or in very rare cases abandon the race. The RC may have to call the race because of a ruling with time and the time of the sunset. Our RC uses the radio to warn those over early or to let all vessels know of any decisions on rulings in these situations.

When this article had originated I had written that the race committee had rarely had to call a race and that in rare circumstances did the racers not finish … As the article sat on my computer waiting for me to finish it, that rare situation occurred in race number two.

The second race of the season was so different from the first with heavier winds, and a course in which they fought both wind and current for the first and last leg for “A” fleet with some boats not finishing because of the lack of sunlight.

I have come back to rewrite this article after weeks of racing, every week with different weather, currents, starts and surprising finishes. Meanwhile Commodore Richard Boltz has begun a series of his own about race. He is a big help to Don Glidewell each week setting the anchor and with departure and landing back at the docks safely. I will continue to take photos of the races while on the West Coast and hope to share them with you here. If you are interested in racing, there are many boats that are willing to take new racers on to help them out. You can contact Dan Carnaha, Race Chairman (email [email protected]) and he may help to find a boat for you. You can also come down on a Thursday night and meet the boat owners and their mates to see if you can join them soon. Thank you, see you here again soon.

BYC Cruise Out to the Richmond Yacht Club (Point Richmond) April 5 – 7 On Friday evening April 7, 10 boat cruisers and about 18 land cruisers joined up at the Richmond Yacht Club (RYC) for drinks, appetizers and dinner. The next day all the boat cruisers and a couple of land cruisers attended the Pacific Boat Show at the Craneway Pavilion and Marina Bay Yacht Harbor on the beautiful waterfront in Rich- mond. Some of us could not avoid buying something for their boat at the show, like SeaDek for their cockpit. That evening the boat cruisers met up at the RYC for cocktails and a pot luck dinner with grill-your-own main course.

Friday Cocktails with Friends at RYC One cruiser waiting for their mate to stop shopping at the boat show

Saturday Pot Luck Dinner

On Sunday the boat cruisers met up on the RYC’s patio for pot luck breakfast and later said good-by. One boat headed back that morning to Benicia on a flood in good weather, one traveled back to BYC Marina next door and another stayed a third night, then went to KKMI for a haul out. It was good fun with lots of camaraderie.

The RYC has nice docks and clubhouse facilities. They are open for cocktails Wednesday (during evening race season), Friday, Saturday and Sunday with food service on Wednesday (during evening race season), Friday and Sunday. If you decide to make your way into the bay, you might want to stay overnight at the RYC as they will let you stay overnight for three nights free. Stop in and introduce yourself to the members. There is a lot to see by walking or by an uber ride into Point Richmond and Richmond Channel. Article by Steve Penny

A catamaran (/ˌkætəməˈræn/) (informally, a "cat") is a multi-hulled watercraft featuring two parallel hulls of equal size. It is a geometry-stabilized craft, deriving its stability from its wide beam, rather than from a ballasted as with a monohull sailboat. Catamaran is from a Tamil word, kattumaram, which means “logs tied together.” Catamarans typically have less hull volume, higher displacement, and shallower draft (draught) than monohulls of comparable length. The two hulls combined also often have a smaller hydrodynamic resistance than comparable monohulls, requiring less propulsive power from either sails or motors. The catamaran’s wider stance on the water can reduce both heeling and wave- induced motion, as compared with a monohull, and can give reduced wakes. Catamarans range in size from small (sailing or rowing vessels) to large (naval ships and car ferries). The structure connecting a catamaran’s two hulls ranges from a simple frame strung with webbing to support the crew to a bridging superstructure incorporating extensive cabin and/or Jack Sutter on a Catamaran cargo space. Simply extend your hand toward the horizon, present four fingers in front of you, and count how many fingers between the western horizon and the sun. For every finger you have about 15 minutes.

Was that a tip you needed to know? If so, could there be others? Before answering, try “the old finger trick” out the next time the sun sets—and try the others listed below. Reading these tips may the best teacher, and could save you just a bit of pain. By Doug Thompson of the Boating World

Kill Switch Connected Ensure the safety lanyard is properly hooked up if you turn the key and the engine won’t start. It’s the first thing to check when you are dead in the water, and the simplest thing to fix. Watch Out for Glass Cleaner Extremely gentle care must be taken when cleaning the windshield—even glass cleaner can cause permanent damage. Plexiglas windows and windscreens are acrylic and should only be cleaned with water and a soft cloth that won’t scratch. Glass cleaner has ammonia in it, and if you use that you are going to destroy the windshield by breaking down the acrylic, and the windshield will haze and crack. Potato Plug A hole in the hull takes quick action, and a raw potato is a ready-made plug. Carve it down to size to stop up drains, hoses and valves. Be One with the Boat Use your legs like shock absorbers to take on rough water; countless YouTube videos offer proof about how dangerous it is to get out of sync with the boat. Stand up, hold on and “move” with the boat—you’ll be happy later. Free VHF Radio Check Using Sea Tow’s free Automated Radio Check Service can reduce the volume of non-urgent communications traffic on VHF Channel 16, the international hailing and distress channel, while still allowing you to perform the check to ensure that your radio is functioning properly. The Automated Radio Check Service uses VHF Channel 24, 26, 27, 28 or 84. Simply tune your radio to the proper channel for your community, conduct a radio check as you normally would, and when you release the mic, the system will replay your transmission, letting you hear how you sound. White-Cloth Alert Lay down a clean white towel in the engine compartment bilge and check for oil spots. Because conditions are extreme when the hatch is down and the engine is blazing. Keeping the engine room tidy allows you to show off a great-looking compartment to friends, and the clean white towel provides the visible backdrop for discovering new problems fast.
