The Houghton Clan

The Houghton Clan is descended from John Warburton of Houghton Green near Warrington. The most likely baptism for John was at Newchurch Kenyon. There are DNA matches that place the clan in the Cheshire Group which is descended from the Norman Knight Odard de Dutton.
The tree is an aggregation of trees from different sources, plus my own research. The trees include input from three descendants of the clan, Brian and Don Warburton of British Colombia, and Peter Warburton from the UK, and the previously separate Widnes Clan incorporating the descendants of William Warburton of Widnes as defined by Karen Stretton, Martin Coble and Rebecca Stone. 1 First Generation
1. Robert Warburton.
Robert is only known from John’s baptism. One other son of Robert (presumed the same) was baptised at Newchurch in 1739, but nothing else is known of him. Children: 2 i. John Warburton (1734-1823) ii. Richard Warburton. Richard was born on 19 Apr 1739. He was christened in Newchurch Parish Church, Lancashire, on 6 May 1739.
2 Second Generation
2. John Warburton (Robert1). John was born on 18 May 1734. He was christened in Newchurch Parish Church, Lancashire, on 2 Jun 1734. John died in Winwick, Lancashire, in 1823. He was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 5 Jan 1823.
This tree is based in input from Don Warburton, and Brian Warburton of British Colombia, and Peter Warburton of Southampton who has placed his tree on Genes Reunited. All three are desendants of this clan. I have added further information from censuses, registrations, and parish registers, though there is more that could be added.
John of Winwick, late of Houghton was buried aged 88 making him of the correct age and place to be the head of this family. The birth and baptism at Newchurch Parish Church also fit with this burial, and the location is close to Houghton, the church originally being a chapel-at-ease for the parish of Winwick.
On 27 May 1760 John married Elizabeth Leather in Warrington, St Elphins, Lancashire. John was from Winwick, Elizabeth of St Elphins parish. The date fits neatly with the birth of John’s first child.
They had the following children: i. Jane Warburton. Jane was born in Houghton, Lancashire, on 30 Mar 1761. She was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 17 Apr 1761. 3 ii. George Warburton (1763-1857) iii. Edward Warburton. Edward was born in Houghton, Lancashire, on 13 Dec 1764. He was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 2 Jan 1765. Edward died in Houghton, Lancashire, in 1770. He was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 3 Jan 1770. 4 iv. John Warburton (1766-1852) v. Mathew Warburton. Mathew was born in Houghton, Lancashire, on 13 Dec 1768. He was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 8 Jan 1769. Mathew died in Houghton, Lancashire, in 1770. He was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 25 Jan 1770. vi. Elizabeth Warburton. Elizabeth was born in Houghton, Lancashire, on 19 Dec 1770. She was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 2 Jan 1771. vii. Mary Warburton. Mary was born in Houghton, Lancashire, on 20 Jan 1773. She was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 2 Feb 1773. viii. Thomas Warburton. Thomas was born in Houghton, Lancashire, on 22 Dec 1774. He was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 6 Jan 1775. Thomas died in 1776. He was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 18 May 1776.
On his burial Thomas is the son of John, abode Fearnhead, age 1. All other references to John give his abode as Houghton, However the two places are close to each other and the age is right so it is assumed that this is the burial of the son of 3 John of Houghton. 5 ix. William Warburton (1779-) x. Ellen Warburton. Ellen was born in Houghton, Lancashire, abt 1785. Ellen died in Fearnhead, Lancashire, in 1788. She was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 17 Mar 1788.
Ellen is only known from her burial aged 3. Her father is described as John of Fearnhead, which is close to Houghton, and matches the description on brother Thomas’s burial.

3. George Warburton (John2, Robert1). George was born in Houghton, Lancashire, on 17 Mar 1763. He was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 5 Apr 1763. ■ Census for Winwick, Lancashire, in 1841. George (78) is a joiner living with Betsy (68). ■ Census for Winwick, Lancashire, in 1851. George (88) is a carpenter and joiner living with Betty (78), daughter Elizabeth Trowell a widowed cook, and grandchildren Thomas Dean (17), and Hannah Trowell (13). George died in Winwick, Lancashire, on 6 Sep 1857. He was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 10 Sep 1857.
George of Winwick, a joiner, was buried in grave 5, aged 94.
On 11 Dec 1786 George first married Jane Gillibrand in Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire. Jane was born abt 1766. Jane died in 1789. She was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 2 Jul 1789.
Jenny, wife of George of Winwick was buried aged 23. The only marriage that fits is that to Jane Gillibrand, and Jenny was originally a diminutive of Jane.
They had the following children: i. Matthew Warburton. Matthew was born in Winwick, Lancashire, on 13 Mar 1787. He was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 30 Mar 1787. Matthew died in Winwick, Lancashire, in 1791. He was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 29 Jan 1791.

William of Winwick, son of George, died aged 3.
On 13 Jul 1791 George second married Elizabeth Tatlock in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire. This appears to be George’s second marriage though he is not described as a widower. Elizabeth was born abt 1756. Elizabeth died in Winwick, Lancashire, in 1797. She was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 5 Dec 1797.
Betty, wife of George of Winwick, died aged 41.

George third married Betty Jackson. Betty died in Winwick, Lancashire, in 1855. She was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 29 Mar 1855.
Betty was buried in grave 5, aged 82.

On 5 Jan 1832 Jane married John Norbury in Huyton by Roby, Lancshire. John and jane have 2 sons and 2 daughters in the 1851 census. John was born in Hatton, Cheshire, abt 1803.
John was a wheelwright in the 1851 census. 6 ii. George Warburton (1802-1879) 7 iii. Thomas Warburton (1804-1863) iv. Elizabeth Warburton. Elizabeth was born in Winwick, Lancashire, on 2 Dec 1806. She was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 28 Dec 1806.
On 29 Dec 1834 Elizabeth married Thomas Trowell in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire. Witnesses included (brother) George Warburton. Thomas died bef 1851. 8 v. James Warburton (1809-) vi. Louisa Warburton. Louisa was born in Winwick, Lancashire, on 26 Apr 1811. She was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 2 Jun 1811.
On 25 Aug 1833 Louisa married William Dean in Warrington, St Elphins, Lancashire. Witnesses included (her brother) Thomas Warburton. vii. Ann Warburton. Ann was born in Winwick, Lancashire, on 20 Sep 1813. She was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 10 Oct 1813.
4. John Warburton (John2, Robert1). John was born in Houghton, Lancashire, on 1 Dec 1766. He was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 19 Dec 1766. ■ Census for Warrington, Lancashire, in 1841. John (74) is a sawyer living in Orford Lane with Mary (72), Thomas (41), Ellen 6 (38) a servant, James (32) a sawyer, Charles (21) a sawyer, and Isaac (10). It is not clear who Charles and Isaac are as they appear too young to be Mary’s children. The best fit for Charles was baptised on 21 May 1820, the son of George and Martha of Warrington, and was buried 19 Jan 1862. He appears in the 1851 and 1861 censues as from Grappenhall or Latchford. The best fit for Isaac is the illegitimate son of Martha baptised 6 April 1828 in Leigh and buried 24 Sept 1848 at Warrington. ■ Census for Warrington, Lancashire, in 1851. John (84) is a late sawyer living in Battersby Lane with Mary (82), Ellen (48) a servant, James (41) a sawyer, and John (8) a grandson, born in Warrington. One birth registration, Warrington 20 804 in 3q 1842, is a match, but there is no matching baptism to determine his parents. John died in Warrington, Lancashire, in 1852. He was buried in Warrington, St Elphins, Lancashire, on 25 Jan 1852.
John’s baptism record (recorded under the name Warbuton) shows he was the son of John, abode Houghton, which matches his 1851 census record. He was living in Battersby Lane at the time of his death. His burial record records his age as 85.
A number of children were baptised at Winwick, father John of Houghton between 1797 and 1812. On the later ones (from 1802) the mother is Mary. On the baptism of Thomas in 1800 John is described as John junior. His father was also John and was still alive at that time. Other than George, only one son, Matthew has been spotted in later censuses.
No obvious marriage of John and Mary can be found, and none at Winwick. The marriage may have been outside the parish, though they are both from Houghton in the 1851 census.
John married Mary. Mary was born in Houghton, Lancashire, abt 1768. Mary died in Warrington, Lancashire, in 1857.
Mary’s death is probably that registered in 4q 1857 Warrington 8c 93, aged 89.

John married Mary. v. Joseph Warburton. Joseph was born in Houghton, Lancashire, on 19 Dec 1806. He was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 25 Jan 1807. vi. James Warburton. 5. William Warburton (John2, Robert1). William was born in Houghton Green, Lancashire, on 14 Feb 1779. William (60) is a gardener living with Elizabeth (55), and Matthew (14). ■ Census for Widnes, Lancashire, in 1851. William (72) is a gardener living at Lane End with Betty (67), and granddaughter Sarah Darbyshire (6). This record was transcribed as Warhurst by Ancestry, thoug Warburton is now added.
William is aged 72, and born at Houghton Green in the 1851 census confirming he is the son of John and Elizabeth.
On 1 Jan 1801 William first married Mary Pinnington in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire. Mary was born abt 1780. Mary died in Hulme, Winwick, Lancashire, in 1803. She was buried in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 22 Apr 1803.
They had the following children: i. Thomas Warburton. Thomas was born in Winwick, Lancashire, on 23 Apr 1801. He was christened in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire, on 24 May 1801. ii. Betty Warburton. 8 Elizabeth was born abt 1783.
Elizabeth’s place of birth on the 1851 census looks like Hogle, Lancashire (which doesn’t exist) and is considered by Ancestry to be Hale, Lancashire.
According to her marriage record she was a widow when she married William, and her maiden name is so far unknown.
They had the following children: i. Mary Warburton. Mary was born in Widnes, Lancashire, in 1811. She was christened in Farnworth, St Wilfred, Lancashire, on 17 Feb 1811. Mary died on 1 Feb 1812.

On 16 Oct 1836 Jane married Peter Smith in Liverpool, St Peter, Lancashire. Jane and Peter had 9 children, including Thomas, the ancestor of my contact Janice Gronow. Peter was born in Cronton, Widnes, Lancashire, abt 1814. He was christened in Farnworth, St Wilfred, Lancashire, on 5 Feb 1815. Peter died in Prescot, Lancashire, in 1868.

George is described as a joiner or carpenter on the baptisms of his children. His death is probably that registered in 4q 1879 Warrington 8c 131, aged 77.
On 20 Jul 1826 George first married Mary Gray in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire. Witnesses included (siblings) Thomas and Jane. Mary was born in Fenton, Yorkshire, abt 1803. Mary died in Winwick, Lancashire, in 1863.
Mary’s death was registered in 3q 1863 Warrington 8c 69, aged 60. Cheshire BMD gives the sub- district as Winwick.

James is described as a joiner on his children’s baptisms. The family is missing from the 1841 and subsequent censuses, even though Jane was baptised only weeks before, at the unusually late age of 2 years. The place of the baptisms, and of Sarah’s marriage suggests they moved round a bit, but it would be a big coincidence for two Jameses who were joiners to be married to a Margaret.
There are two other baptisms in 1845, of James and Ann, children of James, a joiner, and Margaret. These are at St Mary’s, Dalton in Furness and just 21 days apart, on November 2nd and November 23rd. It is possible these also belong to this James and Margaret, but difficult to be sure. One of them must be another late baptism.
On 5 Dec 1831 James married Margaret Jones in Winwick, St Oswald, Lancashire. Witnesses include (brother) Thomas.

Matthew served in Canada for a number of years. He returned injured and became a Chelsea Pensioner. It is believed that the family were in Canada during the 1830/40s, though their two eldest children were born in England.

William has not been found in the 1861 and 1871 censuses but appears in 1881 with a large family which has not been fully explored. Assuming he remained in Livesey the most likely death registration at Blackburn is in 4q 1923 *e 382 aged 84, which is a little too young. However he may have moved away, if he outlived Sarah.
On 18 Oct 1860 William married Sarah Warburton (19) , daughter of 8. James Warburton & Margaret Jones, in Southport, Christ Church. William (25) is a joiner resident in Southport, father George, a joiner. Sarah (23, though indistinct) is resident in Southport, father James, a joiner. A witness is John Warburton (probably William’s brother). William and Sarah were first cousins, their fathers being brothers. The marriage is missing from FreeBMD. He is missing from censuses after 1851 but Betsy describes herself as married in 1861, and the birth of her youngest son, George, is registered at Altrincham in 4q 1868. In 1871 she describes herslf as a widow. However no death of a George of the correct age is registered in 1868-71. Meanwhile on Dec 23rd 1868 George, the son of George Warburton and Margaret Horsefield married Lucy Warburton in Massachusetts (FamilySearch pilot site).

“I was born in a small town in East Lancashire called Horwich, into a very strict Methodist family. My father, who tried to carry out all the tenets of his belief, was also a very strong trade unionist and I remember that he also belonged to the Reform Club which had its main strength in Lancashire.
I was the 8th of a family that finished with 13 children and although father was a journeyman boilermaker, we never had money to spare though not knowing what real want was. I remember we had a parlour where father did his writing and we were allowed there on Sundays when a fire was lit and after Sunday School we all used to sit and read. I remember that we had a picture of Gladstone at one side, Queen Victoria on the opposite, and over the mantel a picture of Hawarden Hall which I was told was the house of Gladstone.
When I was about five things took a change. There was much talking about Socialism and we noticed that the pictures of Gladstone, Hawarden Hall and Victoria had now been replaced. Photogravure given away by Pear’s soap, such as Bubbles, had taken their places. Also my father, who had up to then taken no papers, had started taking the Clarion and read books like Edward Bellamy’s Looking Backwards, Looking Forward and Equality.”
Bennett was originally buried at Lee Lane Congregational Churchyard but for some reason his son James Alfred had his remains disintered, and moved to another cemetery, according to council records. His wife and children are still buried in the Lee Lane Congregational Churchyard.

'During a counter-attack by his Battalion on strong enemy positions South of VILLERS-BRETONNEUX on night 24th/25th April 1918 this man who is a Company Signaller, when his Platoon Lewis Gun Team became casualties, seized the Lewis gun and personally organised a new team to carry ammunition. He used the gun repeatedly upon the enemy, inflicting heavy losses. When his company reached the final position and were consolidating he went forward with the Lewis gun on a fighting patrol engaging parties of the enemy and bringing back valuable information concerning their movements. All this work was carried out under heavy machine gun and rifle fire. His bravery and devotion to duty under heavy fire was of the highest order.' Fred worked at Water Haigh during the 1920s. He was a lifelong socialist and early member of the Communist Party of Great Britain. Later he joined the Labour Party. His story is told in an article posted on the Warburton website and included in Issue 18 of the Button Files newsletter.

William’s birth registration has not been found. 60 In 1897 William Henry married Catherine Jardine. The marriage was registered in 2q 1897 Penrith 10b 887. Catherine was born in Scotland abt 1868.
They had one child: i. Mabel Warburton. Mabel was born in Spital, Cheshire, in 1899.
Mabel’s birth was registered in 4q 1899 Wirral 8a 437, mother’s maiden name Jardine.
47. Thomas Warburton (William5, George4, William3, John2, Robert1). Thomas was born in Wavertree. Lancashire, abt 1881.
Thomas, emigrated to Canada and then to the US around 1906.
Thomas married Lucia (Lucy) Meadows. Lucia (Lucy) was born in 1883.
Lucia (Lucy) Meadows emigrated to the USA in 1908 from Liverpool.
They had the following children: i. Thomas Stanley Warburton. Thomas Stanley was born on 30 May 1910.
Thomas was always very involved in education, earning his PhD from Yale University, the first in the family to complete college. He finished his career as president of Chaffee College in southern California.
His son Roger provided the DNA which matches this clan to the Hale Barns Clan.
Thomas Stanley married Lina Jane Coffing. Thomas and Lina had 3 children including Roger who provided a DNA test for this clan. ii. Lucia Warburton. Lucia was born in 1914.
