This research aimed at verifying the effectiveness of using almond skins, a by-product of the confectionery industry, in the preparation of functional biscuits with improved nutritional properties. Almond skins were added at 10 g/100 g (AS10) and 20 g/100 g (AS20) to a wheat flour basis. The protein content was not influenced, whereas lipids and dietary fiber significantly increased (p < 0.05), the latter meeting the requirements for applying “source of fiber” and “high in fiber” claims to AS10 and AS20 biscuits, respectively. The addition of almond skins altered biscuit color, lowering L* and b* and increasing a*, but improved friability. -

Fall 2014 What’S New? New Minor: Iranian Studies the Near Eastern Languages and Cultures Department Has Established a New Minor in Iranian Studies
-15 ii UCLA Schedule of Classes Fall 2014 What’s New? New Minor: Iranian Studies The Near Eastern Languages and Cultures department has established a new minor in Iranian Studies. The minor gives stu- dents the opportunity to study Iranian languages and civilization while majoring in a different field of study. Introductory courses in the minor provide a foundation in Iranian history, languages, and religions, as well as Persian languages and literature. Other courses in the minor enable students to study particular areas of interest in greater depth. New Minor: Teaching Secondary Mathematics The Teaching Secondary Mathematics minor is designed for students majoring in fields other than mathematics who plan to teach secondary mathematics after graduation. The minor provides recognition for completion of prerequisite coursework for the Joint Mathematics Education Program and prepares students for topics covered on the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) Mathematics test. Instructional Enhancement Initiative (IEI) Fee Billing Change Effective Fall 2014, the IEI fee is converted to a campus-based flat fee and charged to all undergraduate students. Previously the fee was unit-based and billed later in the quarter, based on enrollment in courses as of the fourth week of the quarter. Some students were not aware of the charge, and for some it impacted their ability to enroll in subsequent quarters or impeded their ability to graduate. With the new billing timing, students will be better informed of the fee and the fee can be included in finan- cial aid packages. This is not a fee increase. The fee generates the same amount of revenue as it did previously. -

A Right That Should've Been: Protection of Personal Images On
275 A RIGHT THAT SHOULD’VE BEEN: PROTECTION OF PERSONAL IMAGES ON THE INTERNET EUGENIA GEORGIADES “The right to the protection of one’s image is … one of the essential components of personal development.” Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights ABSTRACT This paper provides an overview of the current legal protection of personal images that are uploaded and shared on social networks within an Australian context. The paper outlines the problems that arise with the uploading and sharing of personal images and considers the reasons why personal images ought to be protected. In considering the various areas of law that may offer protection for personal images such as copyright, contract, privacy and the tort of breach of confidence. The paper highlights that this protection is limited and leaves the people whose image is captured bereft of protection. The paper considers scholarship on the protection of image rights in the United States and suggests that Australian law ought to incorporate an image right. The paper also suggests that the law ought to protect image rights and allow users the right to control the use of their own image. In addition, the paper highlights that a right to be forgotten may provide users with a mechanism to control the use of their image when that image has been misused. Dr. Eugenia Georgiades, Assistant Professor Faculty of Law, Bond University, the author would like to thank Professor Brad Sherman, Professor Leanne Wiseman and Dr. Allan Ardill for their feedback.
