Conversation The Greatest, over TIME When Muhammad Ali frst appeared on the cover of TIME in 1963, he was still Cassius Clay. Although he had won an Olympic gold medal, there were few signs he would become, in many ways, a bigger legend outside of the ring. He was the subject of three more covers over the next four decades. Here is an excerpt from that 1963 cover story: DREAMS CAME EASY IN LOUISVILLE’S WEST END. “Why can’t I be rich?” Cassius once asked his father. His father touched him on one pecan-colored hand and said, “Look there.     10 Muhammad Speaks and Muhammad Ali Intersections of the Nation of Islam and sport in the 1960s Maureen Smith America, more than any other country, offers our people opportunities to engage in sports and play, which cause delinquency, murder, theft, and other forms of wicked and immoral crimes. This is due to this country’s display of filthy temptations in this world of sport and play.1 Introduction With the advent of its first issue, Muhammad Speaks established itself as the voice of the Nation of Islam’s Messenger, Elijah Muhammad. Dedicated to ‘Freedom, Justice, and Equality for the Black Man’, the first issue was printed in October 1961 and the newspaper’s circulation increased at a rate comparable to the discontent of African Americans in the USA during the freedom struggle of the civil rights movement.2 Advocating freedom and separation from whites, the newspaper served a critical role in promoting racial pride, as well as ministering the beliefs and teachings of Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam. Some of these teachings explored issues surrounding a range of athletic pursuits, and initially the Nation rejected the ‘evils’ of professional sport and games. Yet, through the pages of Muhammad Speaks it is possible to identify a shift in the Nation of Islam’s position on sport, as the organisation’s leadership came to recognise the political utility that an association with a prominent Muslim athlete, such as Muhammad Ali, could offer their movement. Once Ali’s use to the Nation of Islam was exhausted, the leaders once again resumed their opposition to professional sport.

Morton, Ph.D. Thesis dated December 2012 This study examines both the mentality of black race heroes in American sporting history and the surrounding atmospheric influences on personality, mentality, masculinity, and global perspective on said heroes, using the case studies of iconic boxers Jack Johnson and Muhammad Au as the primary focus. This study was based on the premise that both boxers initiated a conscious effort of racial pride, black agency, and global hegemony through their consistent success both inside and outside the ring. The researcher found that in almost blind adoration, African Americans chose two unconscious, self-righteous, and raceless blacks who utilized their gifted abilities as boxers to only capture full masculinity in the forms of wealth and power. In response to their considerable inferior treatment at the hands of the majority, blacks actively sought dominant representations of success and defiance of the norms to carry their dreams of black pride. However, both Jack Johnson and Muhammad Ali repeatedly rejected their anointed statuses of “race men” for the chance at true wealth and power in the commercialization and exploitation 1 of their masculinity. In addition, the background environments of both figures are essential to the true analysis of the mentality and perception of the boxers. The conclusions drawn from the finding suggest that both individuals rejected their hometown communities’ ideals of agency and activism and instead opted to embrace the more lucrative ideals of independence (Johnson and Galveston) and interdependence (Ali and Louisville).
